A very large ensemble (32 players) performing compositions written and directed by Cyril Bondi and d'incise, who founded the orchestra in 2010. "13 unissons" [sic] provides a series of brief tonal conglomerates, each hanging in the air for maybe a minute and exhibiting spare consonance and/or shifting dissonances. There's quite a bit of that spinning, beating effect that comes when two pitches move in and out of tune, making for a lot of detail within the simple framework — sound as a physicality.
"27 times" begins with ghostly low end and high scrapes, punctuated by sporadic thumps. There is much sibilance and a repeating mid-register float, soft piano and perhaps bowed metal; a gorgeous sound world to sit in. There is a sense of development as new events are introduced slowly: rolling bass drum, singing strings and serrated hissing, some sort of wobbling vocalizations. The thumps return. Each new wave of sound is a bit more complex, with more voices introduced, and at the same time there is a sense of repetition, though it is not strict.
According to the Insub Meta Orchestra website, this organization plays concerts fairly regularly all over Europe, no mean feat for such a weighty concern — they would be an interesting experience live. There are also a number of videos which are enlightening as to putting faces to names, as well as determining playing techniques. Bondi and d'incise have been very active for many years now, separately and together, and this is another in a long line of worthwhile recordings.
