A live recording of this duo from February of 2013. Roger Turner has long been a favorite player of mine, but I know virtually nothing of Yoshihide's large library, so this disc was something of a surprise. There is much patience exercised here, a lot of space that gets gradually painted in with ringing notes and small groans, giving way ever so eventually to grander gestures.
The opener "The Wait" lives up to it's title with looming empty stretches of museum ambience and small quiet interjections, often resembling sounds heard during set up. "The Sign" ups the ante somewhat, with bursts of quick interaction and sudden volume swells. Things are still stretched out, but the detail becomes more insistent, until a longish outburst of louder thrash and bang rears it's head a couple of minutes in.
Yoshihide's guitar work reminds me a bit of Henry Kaiser here, though the similarity fades rather quickly, and mostly his playing resembles no one else's. He uses effects sparingly and walks the line between traditional string thrashing and more extended technique. Turner also balances heavy stick work with odd sounds and lots of bowing. "The Crack" features a long passage of ringing bells and gongs with sneaky feedback peels leaking into the small spaces, fading into a lopsided rhythm that fades away before sliding into more blast and pound. While seeming to follow tried and true improvisational form (soft to loud to soft), they manage to do so while retaining their own distinct sounds.
