Violinist Billy Bang likes to swing. Hard. He's capable of other things check for example his harrowing 2002 release Vietnam: The Aftermath or his beautiful playing on Kahil El'Zabar's excellent Big Cliff from 1994. But he's the most on when he's sawing hard, and has an excellent platform for just that in his happily ongoing Fab Trio, with the strong rhythm section of bassist Joe Fonda and drummer Barry Altschul.
The trio's fourth record finds them more expansive but no less taut, playing five pieces, four of which are melded into a pair of half-hour tracks. A 30-minute track on a jazz record more often than not means aimless wandering or blowing to exhaustion, but here it's a hardworking band that has learned their way and earned the stuff. And while Bang is a dominant presence, the longer-form playing here gives Fonda and Altschul room for soloing (not to mention cowbell).
Live in Amsterdam was recorded at the famed Bimhuis, and there's good reason that this is their third live album. They're an exciting band that clearly feeds off the audience and the moment.
