   Jazz & Improvisation

AntiClan: Volcano Hour
(Creative Sources)

With two members from Rotterdam's Albatre band--alto saxophonist Hugo Costa and drummer Philipp Ernsting--plus Mexican guitarist residing in Rotterdamn Josue Amador, this free jazz trio uses a diverse set of approaches that is more reflective and experimental than the jazz/punk of Albatre, yet still balances introspection and experimenation with assertive playing.

Brotzmann, Peter / Heather Leigh: Sparrow Nights
(Trost Records)

Reedist Peter Brotzmann and guitarist Heather Lee has been one of Brotzmann's most current active collaborations, performing together for several years, here recorded beautifully in the studio for a 6-track LP and 10-track CD of sympathetic, emotional and articulate dialog from two musicians with an innate sense of timing and give and take borne from mutual experience.

Guionnet, Jean-Luc / Seijiro Murayama: Idiophonic
(Ftarri)

The 4th album from Japanese percussionist Seijiro Murayama and Parisian Jean Luc Guionnet, typically a saxophonist but here on pipe organ, presenting three live improvisations named for idiophones, instruments that creates sound by vibrating without the use of strings or membranes, with two improvisations at a church in Berlin and one at a church in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Halvorson, Mary / Joe Morris: Traversing Orbits
(RogueArt)

Two of this generation's most influential and skilled guitarists, Mary Halvorson and Joe Morris bring their distinct styles and jaw-dropping mastery of their instruments into a duo of collective improvisation, neither player using effects but instead impressing by (often high-speed) lyricism, incredibly precise interaction, and the warmth their long association brings to them.

Imai, Kazuo / Roger Turner: Molecules [2 CDs]
(Ftarri)

Caught live at Bar Isshee in Tokyo, Japan in 2017, the duo of Kazuo Imai (nylon string guitar) and Roger Turner (snare drum, tom tom, cymbals, metal & wood) present two distinct sets, each one on a separate CD, the first using open but continuous playing of great control and precision, the second a more unpredictable and assertive set of unorthodox interplay.

Kuchen, Martin / Ed Pettersen / Roger Turner: The End Of The Universe
(Split Rock Records)

Swedish saxophonist Martin Kuchen (Angles), US guitarist Ed Pettersen, and UK percussionist Roger Turner join together in London for a studio album of improvisations referencing the vastness of space through the exploration of textures and sounds, influenced by the "Interstellar Transmissions" album that improvised with the sounds of the Voyager spacecraft.

Leap Of Faith Orchestra: Cosmological Horizons
(Evil Clown)

The largest ensemble of Boston-area David M.      Buy      $11.95      Listen

Lussier, Rene : Quintette
(Circum-Disc)

Canadian guitarist Rene Lussier formed this quintette in 2016, with Julie Houle on tuba & euphonium, Luzio Altobelli on accordion, and drummers Marton Maderspach & Robbie Kuster, to play the intricate and lyrical pieces he developed, where up to five parts are overlaid at any given time, though the listener only hears the wonderful interplay and exultation of the resulting music.

(Glacial Erratic)

Performing on the Korean gayageum (also known as kayagum), Do Yeon Kim joins Joe Morris performing on guitar for five incredible string improvisations using a diversity of approaches from both players, including pointillistic improv, rich rivers of chords, languid moments of beauty, and moments where it's difficult to discern who's playing what.

(Creative Sources)

Rose, Simon / Nicola L. Hein: Shug Monkey
(Creative Sources)

A "shug monkey" is a cryptid, a creature that may or may not exist, supposed to have features of a dog and a monkey, an odd but apt reference for the unusual improvisations by Berlin-based saxophonist Simon Rose and guitarist Nicola L. Hein, one of 8 tracks named for unusual creatures and mythological beings, each described in sound through extended techniques and powerful playing.

     Buy      $15.95      Listen
