Coordination and elegance. These are the words from Magda Mayas to describe the movements of a murmuration of starlings, the inspiration for the music heard here. Attempting to find the same kind of uniform flow, the "let's all go together"-ness of a mass of avians who seem to be possessed of a single mind.
The long title piece here does bear hallmarks of group flow, the bypassing of intellect and the immersion in intuition. Believe it or not, this takes some doing. To be able to stand back and witness the whole of a thing while simultaneously attending to one's minutia is something a lot of improvisors would give their eye teeth for. To do so without barging in or, alternately, being too timid, is yet more demanding.
The eight players here display a fine understanding of the task to hand, acting most often as a cohesive unit following an unwritten score. They whisper, or crackle, or swell, each in general unison and sonic agreement. A solid mass of "like-minded" players constructing intriguing sound forms. Imitating nature in her manner of operation is something that John Cage often talked about. It's interesting to witness so many people attempting it and fascinating to behold the results.
A film or video of a starling murmuration with this music as a soundtrack would be most enjoyable methinks.
