i am a bit tired of memorials having attended & participated in so many myself but they are an integral & essential part of the art scene. in frank's case as in most the speakers eulogized him by speaking of his kindness, warmth, great artistic contributions, etc. & never once about the problems he battled all of his life with addiction & so forth. i imagine it is not really important to speak ill of the dead or in many cases the other "real" but i do feel it's nice to give some idea of the whole person as a kind of reality check every once in a while. there were some great performances & some boring ones with the likes of amina claudine myers playing organ & singing (a bit too somber for me.), berth hope pianoing & singing a simple song about love the lyrics of which she wrote for a melody of frank's. the saxemble with andrew cyrille, michael marcus, sonny simmons & james carter wailed. billy bang et al. jayne cortez. & finally about 20 musicians led by bang playing one of frank's tunes. for me the great thing was to know that carter (now round), who lowe helped to discover, could still play after seeking the path to fame $ & glory rather than sticking to the out life that his horn 1st promised us. hey whatever happened to those rollickin' new orleansy funerals?
