Recorded at Gateway Studio, in Kingston, UK, on September 29th, 1995, by Steve Lowe.
"The first release of a 1995 studio session, produced by Evan Parker. The Kenny Wheeler Sextet includes Ray Warleigh, Stan Sulzmann, John Parricelli, Chris Laurence and Tony Levin. Evan Parker instigated four recording sessions with Kenny Wheeler and members of this sextet between 1995 and 2003, with a compilation of Wheeler's compositions from these sessions issued on Dream Sequence (2003); the only sextet track on Dream Sequence, "Kind Folk", was taken from the 1995 session which is presented in full here for the first time.
What Was includes compositions by Wheeler, Ray Warleigh, Stan Sulzmann, Mike Pyne and Lee Konitz. This archival release comes on the heels of: (1) The 2025 publication of the biography Song for Someone: The Musical Life of Kenny Wheeler by Brian Shaw and Nick Smart (Equinox); and (2) Some Days Are Better: The Lost Scores by the Kenny Wheeler Legacy receiving a 2026 Grammy nomination in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album category.
From Nick Smart's sleevenotes: "Any previously unreleased studio session from a great artist is an exciting prospect, especially an artist sadly no longer with us but one whose legacy is still being cared for and curated by many of the musicians with whom they were closest. Such is the case with this outstanding recording from Kenny Wheeler's sextet at Gateway Studio in late 1995, capturing a special period in his life with a special group of colleagues.
On What Was we hear Kenny at 65 years old and still at the height of his musical powers, but with the mature finesse and refinement consistent with all his playing during the nineties and particularly on his most successful recording of all time, made just a few months after this session in February 1996, Angel Song (ECM).
This period is perhaps a kind of 'second chapter' in the evolution of his playing; after the fiery Wheeler of the 1970s we hear him now still full of passion and every bit as assured, but with the more reflective, glass-like quality that refined itself into his sound and self-expression around this time. In addition to that, this new release also brings together many of the people deeply connected with Kenny and his musical world throughout his entire career. It's another treasure in the important legacy of a much missed, and irreplaceable musician."-False Walls
"What Was, a long-lost session from one of modern jazz's most lyrical composers and trumpeters, is finally brought to light in full for the first time. What Was is a remarkable rediscovery: a studio session recorded in 1995 that, despite languishing unreleased for over three decades, sounds as vital and immediate as anything already in the extended canon of Canadian-born, UK-based jazz master Kenny Wheeler.
Produced by the saxophonist and longtime collaborator Evan Parker and released on the False Walls label, this 2026 edition of the album treats us to a great and highly inspired Wheeler, 65 at the time, who balanced the reflective maturity of his mid-'90s work with the deeper, more secretive flights of introspection heard soon after on classics like Angel Song.
What Was demonstrates Wheeler's flavourful blend of post-bop sophistication and free-wheeling improvisation, setting no limits or boundaries, with creativity always being his ultimate goal. The sextet performing here is made up of saxophonists Ray Warleigh and Stan Sulzmann, guitarist John Parricelli, bassist Chris Laurence and drummer Tony Levin. A band whose talented musicians make you navigate with constant pleasure through harmonically rich compositions with a balanced mix of structured arrangements and freedom of interpretation. What unites such musicians is not a common style but a common stance: a refusal to dilute complexity, and a belief that audiences are capable of intense listening. Six exceptional musicians, working beyond convention.
Listen carefully to this album and you will appreciate Kenny Wheeler's airy and melancholy timbre that touches your heart. His playing favours nuance and breathing rather than demonstrative virtuosity. Even in the high registers, he maintains a singing sweetness which permeates through the other musicians, taking them with him into a musical universe of rainbow colours.
The album's defining quality, however, may be the palpable sense of collective trust. Even in slow-tempo pieces where space and silence demand vulnerability, the sextet maintains a remarkable unity of intention. Micro-gestures matter: a brushed cymbal swell answering a saxo sigh; a bass harmonic intonation echoing a melodic fragment. These details create the impression of six musicians not merely performing together but listening in real time, adjusting and responding with instinctive precision.
To approach What Was is to encounter music that rewards attention. Certain passages unfold in dense layers of rhythm and harmony; others open into spare, almost suspended moments in which silence becomes part of the composition. This is not music designed for casual background listening. It demands concentration and it is definitely worth concentrating for.
And when the final piece fades, what remains is not just the echo of an instrument or a melody, but the quiet conviction that music, at its best, does exactly what Wheeler did in this session: it stays, it sustains, and it touches the divine.
An album for listeners who believe that art still has a meaning, and that music can still challenge, surprise, and enlarge the imagination."-Frankie Pfeiffer, Paris Move

Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Kenny Wheeler "Kenneth Vincent John Wheeler, OC (14 January 1930 - 18 September 2014) was a Canadian composer and trumpet and flugelhorn player, based in the U.K. from the 1950s onwards. Most of his performances were rooted in jazz, but he was also active in free improvisation and occasionally contributed to rock music recordings. Wheeler wrote over one hundred compositions and was a skilled arranger for small groups and large ensembles. Wheeler was the patron of the Royal Academy Junior Jazz course. Wheeler was born in Toronto, Ontario, on 14 January 1930. Growing up in Toronto, he began playing cornet at age 12, and became interested in jazz in his mid-teens. Wheeler spent a year studying composition at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto in 1950. In 1952 he moved to Britain. He found his way into the London jazz scene of the time, playing in groups led by Tommy Whittle, Tubby Hayes, and Ronnie Scott. In the late 1950s, he was a member of Buddy Featherstonhaugh's quintet together with Bobby Wellins. Throughout the sixties, he worked with John Dankworth, and also formed part of (Eric Burdon and) the Animals' Big Band that made its only public appearance at the 5th Annual British Jazz & Blues Festival in Richmond (1965) with tenors Stan Robinson, Dick Morrissey and Al Gay, baritone sax Paul Carroll, and fellow trumpets Ian Carr and Greg Brown. In 1968, Wheeler appeared on guitarist Terry Smith's first solo album, Fall Out. Wheeler performed and recorded his own compositions with large jazz ensembles throughout his career, beginning with the first album under his own name, Windmill Tilter (1969), recorded with the John Dankworth band. A CD was released by BGO Records in September 2010. The big band album Song for Someone (1973) fused Wheeler's characteristic orchestral writing with passages of free improvisation provided by musicians such as Evan Parker and Derek Bailey, and was also named Album of the Year by Melody Maker magazine in 1975. It has subsequently been reissued on CD by Parker's Psi label. In the mid-1960s, Wheeler became a close participant in the nascent free improvisation movement in London, playing with John Stevens Parker, the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and the Globe Unity Orchestra. Despite the above-noted accomplishments, much of his reputation rests on his work with smaller jazz groups. Wheeler's first small group recordings to gain significant critical attention were Gnu High (1975) and Deer Wan (1977), both for the ECM label (Gnu High is one of the few albums to feature Keith Jarrett as a sideman since his tenure with Charles Lloyd). One exception from the ongoing collaboration with ECM was his rare album on CBC called Ensemble Fusionaire in 1976. This had three other Canadian musicians and was recorded in St. Mary's Church in Toronto for a different character to the sound than on the ECM recordings. Wheeler was the trumpet player in the Anthony Braxton Quartet from 1971 to 1976, and from 1977 he was also a member of the chamber jazz group Azimuth (with John Taylor and Norma Winstone).Later life In 1997 Wheeler received widespread critical praise for his album Angel Song, which featured an unusual "drummerless" quartet of Bill Frisell (guitar), Dave Holland (bass) and Lee Konitz (alto sax). Wheeler died after a short period of frail health at a nursing home in London on 18 September 2014. He was 84 years old." ^ Hide Bio for Kenny Wheeler • Show Bio for Ray Warleigh An Australian-born, UK-based saxophonist and flautist, Ray Warleigh (1938-2015) was a central figure in British modern jazz from the late 1960s onward. Equally fluent on alto saxophone and flute, he worked with artists ranging from Stan Tracey and John Dankworth to contemporary improvisers and studio ensembles, bringing a warm, lyrical tone and refined harmonic sense to both small-group jazz and more exploratory contexts. ^ Hide Bio for Ray Warleigh • Show Bio for Stan Sulzmann "A veteran of the UK jazz scene, Stan Sulzmann has a rich and varied career that has included playing with musicians as diverse as Kenny Wheeler, Larry Grenadier and Gwilym Simcock, as well as a prolific output as bandleader. Always moving forward, Stan's Neon Quartet sees him amongst some of the UKs most sought-after young musicians, and their latest album "Subjekt" explores Stan's ever-developing musical influences. Stan is also a highly respected composer and arranger; his vibrant big band arrangements have excited and inspired people for the last 25 years, and in 2013 Stan was commissioned to write an original piece for the London Jazz Festival. Highly in demand as a sideman, Stan has worked with a host of musicians, including: John Taylor, Jim Mullen, Nikki Iles, Mike Gibbs, Marc Copland, Allan Botchinksy, European Jazz Ensemble, Kit Downes, Michael Brecker and Gil Evans." ^ Hide Bio for Stan Sulzmann • Show Bio for John Parricelli One of the UK's most versatile guitarists, John Parricelli (b. 1959) has built a career spanning jazz, contemporary classical, film, and pop. A frequent collaborator with ECM artists and British jazz luminaries, he is known for his subtle harmonic palette, textural sensitivity, and ability to move seamlessly between composed and improvised settings, making him a sought-after sideman and ensemble player. ^ Hide Bio for John Parricelli • Show Bio for Chris Laurence Chris Laurence (b. 1949) is a highly respected British double bassist whose work bridges jazz and chamber music. A longtime collaborator of Kenny Wheeler, John Surman, and Norma Winstone, Laurence is admired for his resonant tone, melodic phrasing, and understated authority. His extensive discography includes numerous ECM recordings and projects that highlight his lyrical, supportive approach to ensemble playing. ^ Hide Bio for Chris Laurence • Show Bio for Tony Levin "Tony Levin (born 30 January 1940 in Much Wenlock, Shropshire; died 3 February 2011) was an English jazz drummer. His first major position came when he joined Tubby Hayes' Quartet (1965-9). He worked with numerous groups and artists, including the Alan Skidmore quintet (1969), Humphrey Lyttelton band (1969), John Taylor's trio, quartet and sextet (1970s), Ian Carr's Nucleus (1970s), Stan Sulzmann quartet, Gordon Beck's Gyroscope, duo with John Surman (1976), European Jazz Ensemble, Third Eye (1979), Rob van den Broeck (1982), Philip Catherine's trio and quartet (1990s), Sophia Domancich Trio (with Paul Rogers, double bass; 1991-2000), Philippe Aerts trio and quartet (2000s). Since 1980, Levin worked extensively with saxophonist Paul Dunmall, including as a member of the free jazz quartet Mujician, also with Paul Rogers (double bass) and Keith Tippett (piano). In 1994, Levin released his solo album Spiritual Empathy, again with Dunmall on saxophones. In 2006 he played a trio gig with Dunmall & Rogers featuring Ellery Eskelin, Ray Anderson, Tony Malaby as guests at John Zorn's The Stone in NYC. He later recorded again with Paul Dunmall but this time with the addition of his son Miles Levin on drums 'The Golden Lake'. Levin ran his own monthly club in Birmingham, and often performed duets with Paul Dunmall and guest musicians." ^ Hide Bio for Tony Levin
