"Li is a neo-Confucian term for patterns in nature. Fixed and dynamic patterns, patterns in time and space. Simultaneously cyclic, asymmetric and organised. Clouds, trees and dunes. Flow and chaos.

These concepts have inspired composers and artists for centuries, including Per Zanussi, who also considers it a useful metaphor when composing for improvising musicians.Zanussi is himself part of this category of musicians, and he has played with many of the biggest names both nationally and internationally. Organizing improvisation is also the subject of his artistic PhD project from 2017, titled "Natural Patterns - Music Making for an Ensemble of Improvisers".

Per Zanussi is known for his Zanussi 5 and 13 constellations, and is also currently currently working with Trespass Trio, Party+1 and Eyolf Dale Trio, among others. He is an Associate Professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music and the University of Stavanger, Norway, and one of the country's leading composers of jazz and contemporary music. Zanussi has previously written music for Trondheim Jazz Orchestra and BIT20, as well as more than 20 theatre and contemporary dance performances.

Li (and the Infinite Game) consists of 10 different sections, inspired by lots of different music, often at the same time, resulting in music from futuristic funk and prog-afrobeat to Korean shaman ballads and North African free jazz, reflecting the wide range of Zanussi's practice. The inspiration behind the second part of the title comes from James P Carse's book "Finite and Infinite Games":

"Finite games are those instrumental activities - from sports to politics to wars - in which the participants obey rules, recognize boundaries and announce winners and losers. The infinite game - there is only one - includes any authentic interaction, from touching to culture, that changes rules, plays with boundaries and exists solely for the purpose of continuing the game."

"The Infinite Game" refers to the endless possibilities we have of forming relations with people we meet, in this case represented by the ensemble who join forces to create music together. To make the compositions come to life he has gathered 11 musicians from Bergen and Stavanger, who make up the members of the Vestnorsk Jazzensemble (VNJE) for this project

VNJE is Vestnorsk Jazzsenter's new ensemble initiative. The musicians in the ensembles are hand picked for each project. The artistic director of VNJE is Kjetil Møster, who has played on and off with Per Zanussi for 25 years, and who is also playing tenor and baritone saxophones in this project."-Clean Feed

"Simen Kiil Halvorsen originates from the jazz scene in Stavanger. He is now based in Oslo. Both his background and his current musical activity is broad and includes different styles and traditions. With influences such as Coltrane, Chet Baker, Grieg, Stravinskij and modern nordic jazz styles, his curiosity and nuanced experience is present in the music. Simen´s music is dynamic, organic, honest and full of surprises. He has explored his inner musicality and might be one step closer in the eternal prosess of finding his unique inner voice."

"I am Heidi Kvelvane and I originally come from Sandnes. When I was 8 I started playing the clarinet in the Lura school choir, but when I was 13 I changed my main instrument to the saxophone. I was then the only saxophonist in the school band, and the spring after I changed instruments, there was the Rogaland Championship for bands. There, the lura school band was to play in the 1st division, and I was to play solo with the band. This kicked off the joy of practicing that I have had ever since. I knew early on in secondary school that I wanted to go to the music major at the daring upper secondary school. I started here in 2016, and was able to develop myself musically, and quickly found a love for arranging and composing, which I have made great use of in recent times. I also participated for several years in soloist classes in the Rogaland Championship, where I got a podium place 4 years in a row. In addition to playing classical solo pieces, I was also active in SAUS (Sandnes and Stavanger's youth big band) and as a substitute in, among other things, Orstad big band and Bjergsted jazz ensemble. When I was 17, I had lessons with Tor Yttredal, saxophone professor at UIS. He taught me an incredible amount during the year I went with him. After upper secondary school, I applied for the jazz major in Bergen, and am now studying performing jazz saxophone at the Grieg Academy. Here I have met many fine musicians with whom I have several own bands and ensembles, where I also write my own music. Despite the corona year 2020, I have had an incredible number of opportunities to play with people, which I previously only dared to dream about. Among other things, I have had the opportunity to play with prominent jazz musicians such as Paal Nilsenlove, Kristoffer Alberts, Jørgen Træen, Terje Isungset, Henrik Økland, and Nils Henrik Asheim."

"Kristoffer Alberts (b. 1982) has emerged in the Norwegian scene of improvised music with a fresh approach to the saxophone. One hears traces of Albert Ayler, Ab Baars and the likes of Frank Lowe but Alberts has let his influences shape the music so you feel them rather than hearing them loud and clear. His contribution to the scene is also seen with his own label. Alberts is active in groups like Cortex, collaborations with Lasse Marhaug, Maja Ratkje and Steve Noble, whom all are featured on recordings released by his own label as well as Clean Feed."
