Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"In the very beginning of 2023, it is time for Mário Costa's sophomore take on his more personal and authorial project. The new album is titled Chromosome, named after Costa's rigorous and custom-made writing, considering the DNA of each one of the musicians that he carefully handpicked for the project.

Listening to Chromosome it is easy to be enticed by that acute detail of compositions thought as a means to explore each performer's qualities, enhancing the genius of these captivating and staggering nine tracks. If we keep in mind that Cuong Vu's trumpet can be found in Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny, David Bowie or Laurie Anderson's projects, that Bruno Chevillon's double bass is an habitué in bands lead by Louis Sclavis, Michel Portal or Daniel Humair, and that Benoît Delbecq's piano has found its way into the music of such diverse protagonists as Evan Parker, Mark Turner or Mary Halvorson, we may get a pale idea of the musical gathering that is taking place here. But only a pale idea because the music that is born out of this four brilliant and very different personalities is greater than the sum of its parts.

Each track that Mário Costa offers his accomplices feels like a red carpet for them to explore on, creating the ideal context for a miraculous musical response. And having said that, it is still so little a description. Only music can truly speak for the bewilderment and the creativity outburst that unfolds from Chromosome."-Clean Feed

"Cuong Vu is widely recognized by jazz critics as a leader of a generation of innovative musicians.

A truly unique musical voice, Cuong has lent his trumpet playing to a wide range of artists such as Pat Metheny, Laurie Anderson, and David Bowie.

As a youngster, Cuong's intense dedication and love for music led him to a full scholarship at the New England Conservatory of Music where he received his Bachelor of Music in Jazz studies with a distinction in performance. Transitioning from his studies in Boston, he moved to New York in 1994 and began his career actively leading various groups while touring extensively throughout the world. As a leader, Cuong has released eight recordings, each making critics' lists of the 10 best recordings of their respective years and has received rave reviews from notable publications such as the New York Times, The New Yorker, Harper's, the Guardian, BBC Music Magazine, JazzTimes and Downbeat. Each record displays how he has carved out a distinctive sonic territory as a trumpet player, blurring all stylistic borders while developing his own compositional aesthetic and sound world.

A recipient of the 2 Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album as a member of the Pat Metheny Group, Vu has garnered internationally acclaim, having been recognized as one of the top 50 Jazz Artists in an article called "The New Masters" from the British magazine, "Classic CD" and has been named the Best International Jazz Artist by the Italian Jazz Critics' Society. Amazon listed Vu's "Come Play With Me" on their "The 100 Greatest Jazz Albums of All Time." Each of his recordings as a leader have been placed on esteemed jazz critics' Best Of/Top Ten releases of the year. Most recently Cuong received Europe's Echo Jazz 2017 Awards, International Instrumentalist for his work on his recording, "Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny".

"Benoît Delbecq was born in St Germain en Laye (F), June 6, 1966. He lives in Bondy, near Paris. A dreamer and an adventurer in music, pianist/composer/producer Benoît Delbecq has been one of the activists of Hask (1992-2004) and Astrolab (1994-1999), two Paris-based cutting-edge jazz/improv collectives that have contributed to significantly revitalize the french creative music scene around the club Instants Chavirés in Montreuil/Paris. His music and projects include works for theater, dance, litterature, visual arts and motion pictures, that are being regularly invited by major festivals worldwide. He has released about 35 records as a leader or co-leader among a discography of more than a hundred discs.

Anchored in both jazz history as well as in aesthetical stakes of today's new musics, Delbecq's works are world-widely acclaimed since the early nineties. He is a renown specialist for a personal and polymetric approach of "prepared piano", and has also an regular activity in the electronic department. His works are experimenting a blend of improvisation and composition in which he reveals a rich pallet of sounds, enlightened by stratas of multiple momentums, articulations and seemingly floating harmonies. Inspired by alternative urban musical experiments and electronic music adventures, he also improvises a personal approach of drum'n bass and ambient.

Benoît was awarded 'Prix jeunes affiches de la SACEM' in 1995 with group KARTET, prix de la Villa Médicis Hors-les-murs 2001 for his first solo piano recording " Nu-Turn " (Songlines, 2003), was awarded with the fellowship of Civitella Fundation (New York, 2009), was awarded in 2010 a double Grand Prix International du Disque (Académie Charles Cros, the French Grammy Awards), and his trio CD "The Sixth Jump " (Songlines) was listed in the New York Times top ten jazz/pop records of 2010. His works for the Fred Hersch/Benoît Delbecq FUN HOUSE double trio (premiered and recorded in May 2012, to be released FEB 2013) have recently received the French Ministère de la Culture " Commande d'Etat " funding. Recently he was commissioned by JAZZTOPAD Festival in Wroclaw (Poland) for a new piece for the Lutoslawski String Quartet and two improvisers (Miles Perkin on bass and himself on piano)."

"Bruno Chevillon (born 23 August 1959) is a French jazz double bassist who is well known in avant-garde jazz as well as in new improvised music.

Born in Valréas Vaucluse, Chevillon followed a double training since he graduated from the Beaux Arts in 1983 where he studied photography, and at the same time followed Joseph Fabre's classical double bass teaching at the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional d'Avignon [fr]. He made his debut in jazz by following the class of André Jaume [fr], is a member of the Groupe de recherche et d'improvisation musicales (GRIM), then joined the Lyon collective Association à la Recherche d'un Folklore Imaginaire [fr] where he made a decisive encounter: that of Louis Sclavis. Chevillon was then associated with a large part of the clarinettist's projects.

In addition to his long collaboration with Sclavis, the double bassist plays with the main actors of avant-garde jazz and Free improvisation : Marc Ducret, Claude Barthélemy, Stéphan Oliva, François Corneloup, François Raulin, Joey Baron, Elliott Sharp, Franck Vigroux, Benjamin de la Fuente, Samuel Sighicelli, Laurent Dehors, Gerome Nox etc.

Essentially a sideman, Chevillon also flourishes as a soloist, however, notably in his performance on Pier Paolo Pasolini. Contemporary classical music is also part of his work.

In 2007, he recorded his only solo album Hors-Champ published on the label d'Autres Cordes, which mixes double bass and electronics. In 2014, he joins the [National Jazz Orchestra] as artistic advisor, alongside Olivier Benoit."
