Eno, Brian Performed by Dedalus Ensemble : Discreet Music / Music For Airports / Tuesday Afternoon [ (Sub Rosa)

The French Dedalus Ensemble render three works from the ground-breaking ambient work of Brian Eno--Discreet Music (1975), Music for Airports (1978), and Thursday Afternoon (1985)--performed as an 11-piece acoustic ensemble and remaining faithful to the introspectively intelligent intention and peaceful elegance of Eno's original electronic works.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"With Discreet Music (1975), Music for Airports (1978), and Thursday Afternoon (1985), Brian Eno invented a new music genre, ambient music, which he defined as "able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting." These versions performed and arranged by Dedalus Ensemble, according to the musicians and the critics who listened to it, goes beyond what you expect from it. A mental base that takes you far away. One of the only music without beginning or end in which we want to stay as long as possible."-Sub Rosa

Artist Biographies

"Brian Eno, in full Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno, (born May 15, 1948, Woodbridge, Suffolk, Eng.), British producer, composer, keyboardist, and singer who helped define and reinvent the sound of some of the most popular bands of the 1980s and '90s and who created the genre of ambient music.

While an art student in the late 1960s, Eno began experimenting with electronic music, and in 1971 he joined the fledgling band Roxy Music as keyboardist and technical adviser. A rivalry with singer Bryan Ferry led Eno to leave the group in 1973, whereupon he launched a solo career. No Pussyfooting (1973), a collaboration with guitarist Robert Fripp from King Crimson, used tape-echo and tape-delay techniques to create new sounds and reached the Top 30 in Britain. Eno's next album, Here Come the Warm Jets (1973), was soon followed by the proto-punk single "Seven Deadly Finns." In the mid-1970s Eno began developing his theory of ambient music, creating subtle instrumentals to affect mood through sound. Albums such as Discrete Music (1975), Music for Films (1978), and Music for Airports (1979) exemplified this approach.

During this period Eno also began producing albums for other artists, and his experimental approach to music making was well suited to such alternative performers as Devo, Ultravox, and David Bowie (especially on Bowie's trilogy of albums recorded primarily in Berlin). Although Eno's work was influential, it was not until his collaborations with Talking Heads and U2 that mainstream listeners became familiar with his sound, most notably on Talking Heads' Top 20 album Remain in Light (1980) and U2's chart-topping albums Unforgettable Fire (1984), The Joshua Tree (1987), and Achtung Baby (1991).

Throughout the 1990s, Eno joined a number of visual artists to provide sound tracks to installation pieces, and in 1995 he worked with Laurie Anderson on Self Storage, a series of installations housed in individual lockers at a London storage facility. Anderson provided the vocals for a track on Eno's electronic album Drawn from Life (2000), and Eno followed with a rare vocal album of his own, Another Day on Earth (2005). He returned to the producer's chair for Paul Simon's critically lauded Surprise (2006) and Coldplay's multi-platinum Viva la Vida (2008). In 2008 Eno teamed with former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne for their first collaborative effort in nearly three decades. Adopting the self-publishing model popularized by Radiohead, Byrne and Eno released Everything That Happens Will Happen Today on the Internet, where listeners could stream the entire album for free or purchase physical or digital copies directly from the artists."

"After studying the guitar at the CNSM of Paris, Didier Aschour was awarded a prize from the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation and a scholarship from the Darmastadt Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (1992 and 1994). A committed soloist fond of contemporary music, he premieres many works written for him and performs with Ensemble 2e2m, TM+, Aleph, L'Instant Donné, Zellig and Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1996, he founded Ensemble DEDALUS, specializing in minimalist music and free instrumentation scores, with which he stands in favour of experimental contemporary music. He plays with Sejiro Murayama, Kristoff K.Roll duett, La Fanfare E. and Kasper T. Toeplitz.

As a composer, he works for dance - with choreographers such as Mathilde Monnier, Germana Civera, Patrice Barthès - and performance, imagining acoustic devices that question the relationship between music and sound phenomena.

Since 2007, he has been taking part in the Montpellier Sonorités Festival collective activities."

"After her classical studies at the CRR in Lille, she quickly turned to the contemporary music repertoire, joining L'Instant Donné from 1994-1998, then the Ensemble Dedalus, which was particularly focused on American minimalist music.

Over the course of the encounters, the theater has become obvious to her:

She participates in shows by Sophie Le Carpentier, Agnes Delume, as well as those of La Compagnie Grand Magasin.

She plays in concert both the romantic flute, with the Trio Mario Praz (flute, viola, guitar) and, more recently, the baroque flute.

She teaches at the conservatory of Saint-Cloud."

She obtained her diplomas at the Bologna and Rovigo conservatories (Italy), specialising under Master Enzo Porta (with whom she went on to establish a violin duo for a short and lucky period). Subsequently, she moved to Paris, where she studied with Jeanne Marie Conquer (Ensemble Intercontemporain) and Patrick Bismuth (baroque violin).

Her research on sound and instrumental gestures, fuelled by her own experience as an improviser, finds expression through several collaborations with composers.

She writes music for her own musical projects.

A few recent collaborations:

"Scrap" for violin and interactive electronics, by the Korean composer Hyun-Wa Cho, performed at the IRCAM institute in Paris;Original music for the contemporary dance production "DONC", for one violinist and four dancers, for Sylvain Groud's dance company;Original music for the poetry reading/concert "21 a Primavera", with poems written by Alda Merini and read by the actress Margherita Zanardi;

She plays violin with the Ensemble Dedalus, which boasts collaborations with many American and European composers (Christian Wolff, Alvin Lucier, Phill Niblock, Jürg Frey, Michael Pisaro, Jean-Luc Guilonnet, etc.). With the Ensemble Dedalus she also recorded the "Rational Melodies" by American composer Tom Johnson for New World Records.

She plays in a duo with Massimo Simonini (prepared theremin) (Hagen Festival, Santarcangelo dei Teatri, Mantica) and collaborated with him in writing and performing the music for the show "L'uccello di fuoco" by Chiara Guidi (Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio).

In 2010 she wrote the music for the video "Supermamie" by Thomas Mailaender, commissioned by the festivals Act'Oral (Marsiglia) and Sonorités (Montpellier).

"Cyprien Busolini: violist Born in 1978. After classical studies of viola, Cyprien Busolini focuses mainly on contemporary repertoire and improvisation. He obtained a first viola prize at the CNR Rueil-Malmaison in the class of Françoise Gneri, then he perfected with P.Faure and P.H.Xuereb. His great interest in contemporary music and especially new works allows him to work with many composers like L.Naon, HULehmann, T.Johnson, JLGuionnet ... He has also played or created some of their solo pieces or sets. Improvisation allows him to work on other sound fields and to explore his instrument in a more personal way, notably on non-melodic and non-harmonic parameters but more focused on the matter of sound. Regularly, he works with dancers, actors, either in improvisation or for shows whose musical part he elaborates. On the other hand, he occasionally runs improvisation workshops for children. He currently plays in different ensembles, Dedalus, Onceim, and various groups of improvisation as well as in the whole Fratres, old music ensemble on old instruments. He has made several solo or Dedalus ensemble recordings, the Diagonal ensemble, but also with Garth Knox and various improvisational discs."
