Artist Biographies:

"Jeph Jerman is a musician who began his musical career drumming and playing in bar bands. In the 1980s, he became aware of other sonic possibilities for his drum kit and started learning to improvise and record his own music. During this time Jerman was a frequent collaborator with other musicians who were also exploring improvisational techniques. In the mid-1980s, Jerman founded a cassette label for the distribution of music by himself and friends. The label released over 50 cassettes, several LPs, and a short-lived magazine.

After relocating from Colorado to Seattle, Jerman continued playing with local groups of improvisers and began giving solo performances where he improvised with mostly natural found objects, a practice he continues today. He founded the first animist orchestra dedicated to making larger scale works using natural object play. In 1999, Jerman moved to Cottonwood, AZ. He continues to investigate sound and recording in many forms including field recordings, the building of crude sound making devices, and the effects of age and other damage to analog tape. Jerman's 2014 Grants to Artists award funded recording and touring with Tim Barnes. Jerman continues to collaborate with Dave Knott in a band collectively known as The Yes, Well, and with Tim Barnes, with whom collaborated on an FCA-supported record released in 2015 (Erstwhile Records.) Other CDs and works are available on Anomalous Records, Semperflorens, and Trait Media Works."

"Born 3 28 58 Framingham Massachusetts USA. John Hudak has been interested in sound and music from the age of four when he began to play a variety of instruments. At the University of Delaware (BA, English 1981) and Naropa Institute for the Arts (1979), he studied video, photography, creative writing and dance. He then began to create taped soundtracks for his solo performance art pieces. In recent years, he has concentrated on sound, particularly natural sounds. Hudak's current sound work focuses on the minimalism and repetition of sounds below the usual threshold of hearing, sounds that are filtered out or considered non-musical. These sounds are recorded, deconstructed and processed, their rhythms and textures being the basis for aural manipulations."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"Domaine Poetique was the mail collaboration between Jeph Jerman (Hands To) and John Hudak, two of the most prominent artist to emerge from the 1980's "cassette culture" underground. Alongside artist like The Haters and Merzbow, they helped carved out a space for experimental sound while constructing the networks through which those sounds would circulate.

Domaine Poetique released seven cassettes from 1987-1989, most of which are nearly impossible to find today. The sounds they contain predict much of what has followed in the past 30+ years of experimental/noise: saturated tapes, field recordings, harsh noise, industrial clatter, minimalist drones, haunting loops, and more. These recordings are like an archeological dig into the emergence of sounds we now take for granted, before micro-genres, before rigid formulas, before ready-made templates.

Jerman and Hudak were masters of the cassette tape, and their collaboration seamlessly blended their unique approaches into something that was more than the sum of its parts. An absolutely mandatory collection for anyone interested in the worlds of noise, industrial, and experimental sound.

This box compiles their entire discography, with more than seven hours of sound: Great Many (Sound of Pig), Hilarious Picture (S.J. Organisation), Exhale Slowly (Sound of Pig), Need Not Be (Big Body Parts), Tenant Farmer (Big Body Parts), They Are Sent (Big Body Parts), and There and Then (Sound of Pig). Each disc is housed in an individual slip-case that reproduces the original artwork.

The collection is contained in a hard clamshell case, and includes a large two-side poster insert that displays the letters, postcards, artwork, and other mail artifacts that Jerman and Hudak sent back and forth throughout their collaboration, a fascinating visual document of their artistic process. The recordings were remastered for CD from Jeph Jerman's archival tapes by Grant Richardson, and the boxset was designed by John Wiese."-New Forces
