Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Sfyria Trio is a free-improvising band comprised of Sam Decker on saxophone, Charlie Kirchen on bass, and Matt Carroll on drums. The group constructs music out of fragmentary melodic motifs and the wide timbral affordances of each instrument, resulting in moody, delicately textured improvisations that navigate a variety of sonic worlds."-Astral Spirits

"Sfyria Trio is a free improvising band comprised of Sam Decker on saxophone, Charlie Kirchen on bass, and Matt Carroll on drums. Since its inception in December 2016, the group has refined its approach to improvisation, developing an idiom that incorporates elements from a wide range of musical perspectives. The evolution of the group's sound is documented on two recordings: 2017's self-release, Opening, and The Rockefeller Concert on Astral Spirits."-Rhizome, DC

Artist Biographies

"Sam Decker moved to Brooklyn, New York, in early 2012, and has since been playing straight-ahead jazz, contemporary jazz/improvised music, free improvisation, as well as rock and folk music in the New York music scene. Drawing from sources such as Stravinsky, Mark Turner, Deerhoof, and Elliot Smith, his music is both familiar and unfamiliar. Originally from the Chicago area, Sam attended New England Conservatory in Boston, where he studied with George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi, Bob Moses, Ken Radnofsky, John McNeil, Frank Carlberg, and Cecil McBee. He also studied contemporary classical composition and improvisation with Katarina Miljkovic. Sam is a founding member of Green and Glass, co leads the Decker/LoRe quartet with Alex LoRe, and leads an instrumental group called Shrove. In addition, Sam is part of the Logan Strohsal Group, who's first record "Up Go We" is released on Sunyside records, as well as other folk and instrumental projects and collaborations. Sam has been teaching privately in addition to working with various music programs in New York and New Jersey since 2012."

"Charlie Kirchen is a scholar, composer, improviser, and bassist based in NYC and Chicago. His scholarly work is centered on the history and theory of improvised/creative music, the processes by which certain musical idioms become valuable, the relationship between music's logical and sensuous aspects, and the Midwest. His creative work is focused on exploring a visceral free-improvised expression within the context of logically rigorous formal, melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic frameworks. He maintain an active touring and recording schedule with groups such as the Charlie Kirchen Quartet, Sfyria Trio, the Few, and Rooms."

"Matt Carroll is a drummer, composer, and music educator from Chicago, Illinois. His development started at the age of 5, when he took up cello, classical piano, and percussion on a "drum set" of plastic paint buckets. Matt is a musician dedicated to awakening a sense of the new while holding down a rich tradition of groove and spirit. Balancing between the worlds of jazz, improvised music, and rock, Matt has had the opportunity to perform and record with some of Chicago's finest musicians. He can be heard on recordings by Ohmme, VV Lightbody, Nico Segal, Marrow, and in collaboration with Sfyria Trio, Typical Sisters, Rooms Trio, and Bison Bison. He has performed at the Pitchfork Music Festival, The Ryman Auditorium, The Chicago Jazz Festival, Summer Fest, and the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity among others.

Matt is also a co-organizer of Flood Music, an artist-run label and concert series that seeks to explore connections between diverse forms and approaches to music-making while developing a community of artists and audiences that reaches beyond boundaries of style and medium.

Matt's broad, joyfully open and inquisitive spirit continues to expand his vision beyond geographic and genre boundaries, enhancing his versatility and enabling him to convey his passion to audiences the world over."
