A uniquely bizarre and brilliant pairing between drummer Weasel Walter and saxophonist Martin Escalante, Walter an incessantly active drummer, here in absurdly impressive technique on drums and bass pedal in the face of and complementing Escalante's truly extreme use of the sax, at times like a steroidal bird call of savage intent; jaw dropping!
Format: CD Condition: New Released: 2018 Country: USA Packaging: Digipack Recorded at Seizures Palace, in Brooklyn, New York, on February 25th, 2018, by Jason LaFarge.
"Born in Lakewood in the US, Martin Escalante is a photographer, film maker and self taught musician. In 2012 he founded Sploosh Records, publishing various solo and collaborative works. As well as this release, 2016 has also seen Escalante work at Marhaug's studio recording the soundtrack for his brother Amat Escalante's new film The Untamed."-ugEXPLODE
"Gonna be extra hard describing this ugEXPLODE release w/o copping too much from the other ones. That means NO AACM comparisons (including the droppings of such names as Joseph Jarman, Anthony Braxton or Roscoe Mitchell) nor slight appeals to free jazz heritage (Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Guiffre etc.). Sheesh, and I would like to fill out the review to at least covers' length at the left of where you are now reading with something about Weasel Walter's percussion sans any paens to the inside/outside the beat purveyors as Sunny Murray or Ronald Shannon Jackson for that matter. Maybe a few...naw, not even that would suffice. Sheesh, I guess I really am at a loss of words as far as telling you just how much of an ajax this newer than new jazz as it was meant to be staked out platter is, eh?"-Blog2Comm
