"Sylvain Debaisieux, tenor saxophone, born 1993 in Brussels.

Born in 1993 in Brussels, Sylvain Debaisieux ran very early into music thanks to his brother, a classical pianist and to his parents, classical and jazz lovers.

He began to play the saxophone at the age of 8, and started to learn improvisation during workshops at Libramont when he was 13 years old. There and in different academies of music, he has been getting to know people who allowed him to grow musically : StÈphane Mercier, Bart Defoort, Pierre Vaiana, Bo Van Der Werf, Bernard Guyot, and many others... In 2011 he started his bachelor degree at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, which opened him new doors. It is also offering him a lot of opportunities, especially playing with his elders and teachers but also with other young musicians. This allows him to perform regularly on the young Brussels stage and to discover the enjoyments of artist life.

He is selectioned at 18 to be part of the "European Saxophone Ensemble" project, directed by the french saxophonist Guillaume Orti and touring all over Europe.

In the past, was also involved in the following bands: Tribute To Keith Jarrett' American Quartet, Joachim Caffonnette Quintet."

"Niels Vermeulen (1978) is a composer, multimedia artist and educator living in Utrecht.

He started his studies at the HKU where he studied composition (music technology department). After 3 years he went to the Royal Conservatory to study classical music, theory and education (Music Music department). Within the study Vermeulen chose to focus on leading composition workshops. He followed, in addition to his studies, various trainings from renowned makers of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Eventually he graduated as music maker / workshop leader at the Société Gavigniès of Renee Jonker.

After his studies Vermeulen worked for many cultural organizations as workshop leader and maker. He worked for Yo-Opera, Papageno Foundation, Buitenkunst Foundation and various youth theater schools. He also gave trainings in collective production processes at music schools and centers for the arts.

During these years he recorded his record label Samekh Records, which released an eclectic mix in the field of world music and electronics. Vermeulen himself produced electronic music in the laptop quartet Sobchek and later in Technoband GardenFest.

After giving workshops during the Artistic Reflective Week at the Conservatory in Groningen, Vermeulen decided to work in Groningen more often. He started as a teacher with courses of 'creative teaching', 'improvisation for classical musicians' and 'advanced group dynamics'. He also started the Creative Ensemble in which students from all departments and years were represented.

Through a scholarship, Vermeulen was able to report to the International Master of New Audiences and Innovative Practices (NAIP) in 2013. The NAIP is a cooperation between Conservatories (eg Iceland Academy of the Arts Reykjavik / Royal College of Music Stockholm / Prince Claus Conservatory of Groningen / Royal Conservatory of The Hague) and gives the student the opportunity to map out their own route within an extensive network. Because of the flexible design, continuous mentoring and international context, the NAIP is very suitable for curious lifelong learners.

Vermeulen eventually obtained Cum Laude's Master of Music title with a Multimedia Artistic Research Project on serendipity (entitled: The Unexpected System ).

After his master, Vermeulen continued his job as an educator in the field of group dynamics and cross-doctor at the Prince Claus Conservatoire, the NAIP Master and the Master Art Education in Groningen. He is also involved in various projects in which music, theater and visual arts come together. As a musical director, he was responsible for VOID SPACE, together with director Marcel Sijm, a performance at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam for 100 orphaned elderly people. For TivoliVredenburg he is workshop leader for the Pronkstukken Projects in which young people together create new work in response to a classical composition.

As a multimedia artist, Vermeulen is part of electronics duo HexBlack, together with Jurgen van Harskamp. He also makes reflective drawings & electronic music under the name THUS."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

Lynn Cassiers writes:

"For the occasion of a Carte Blanche for Brosella Folk and Jazz Festival 2017, I put a 7 piece band together and wrote new music for it. A fresh new version of the 'Imaginary Band' that had been patiently sleeping in my head, had finally been born. The core of the band, a contemporary piano trio with it's roots deeply embedded in jazz, formed by the well known Erik Vermeulen Trio (Django d'Or) with Manolo Cabras and Marek Patrman on bass and drums. While the top of the band consists of a less obvious 'jazz' instrumentation, such as the violin, played by the all-round Ananta Roosens whom we may know from Gotham Project, Oba Loba, La Sieste du Dromadaire,..... and the euphonium player Niels Van Heertum that has been a prominent part of the Belgian Improv Scene for the last decade, being part of a vast number of ensembles and orchestras such as; Ifa y Xango, Book of Air, Solo, Chantal Acda, Platel/Cassol: Requiem pour L., .... Last member of this divers band is the young and talented Sylvain Debaisieux on tenor and soprano saxophones. Sylvain has been noticed on the jazz scene being part of Stéphane Galland & The Mystery of KEM, Pentadox, Eve Beuvens' Heptatomic, etc...

The music.

I wrote the music in order to give value to the wide range of timbres and dynamics of this band. I looked for structures that could offer enough freedom harmonically and rhythmically to the rhythm section and at the same time provide me a good platform to express the voice, through song and through merely sound. I looked for textures where the individuality of the different instruments could come to live, applying various kinds of approaches in improvisation to harmonic and non harmonic contexts. The result is a 'layered' music that rests on open structures, flirting with pop aesthetics as much as with free jazz and electronic improvised music while the rhythm trio pulls the repertoire through the history of jazz. Influences you might distinguish are Ornette Coleman, Paul Bley, Frank Zappa, Annette Peacock, Ligeti, Miles Davis Quintet, and any band I've played in the last 15 years.(you can check on this website)

The lyrics.

Theme-wise, this album treats different subjects. It's about what it means to stand in this society today for me, or possibly for someone else around me. Rather daily issues than world problems. For instance the difficulties new medias may bring upon us, referring to new and old (mis-) communication, consummation, social pressure, control of the intellect. But also more classic issues that may include; loss of dear ones, existential questions and escapism. My approach to lyrics is, as it is to the music, a very free one. Although the ideas above lie on the basis of most of the texts, the lyrics often may seem to have no content. Built up by phrases that I like and with little determined information, they stay open for interpretation depending on the listeners imagination.

The record.

Our first record is out on Clean Feed the 11th of May! Recorded in December 2017 at DADA Studios by Peter Soldan and Thibault Dupont. Mixed and Mastered by Manolo Cabras. Album Artwork and Photography by Sophie Saporosi."
