An exciting meeting of multi-generational and multi-national, forward-thinking free improvisers performing live at Klub Demboh in Berlin in 2017, from the sextet of Axel Dorner (trumpet), Mia Dyberg (alto saxophone), Pierre Borel (alto saxophone), Ernesto Rodrigues (viola), Tristan Honsinger (cello) and Guilherme Rodrigues (cello). The reference in the title is to the 1944 film "Laura" featuring Gene Tierney, described as:
"Laura Hunt, a talented illustrator, screws up the courage to ask newspaper columnist Waldo Liedecker to say something positive about the ad she designed for his paper. But before he can oblige, Laura is found dead in her apartment. Detective Mark McPherson is put on the case, and during the course of his investigation he falls in love with the dead woman."
During the performance of the track "Laura! Wo Bist du gewesen?" (Laura, where have you been?) one of the band members calls out about the protagonist.
Aside from the reference, the music is surprisingly active for a group featuring label founder Ernesto Rodrigues and his son Guilherme, and the band features Umlaut and Wandelweiser associates. That doesn't slow down the members of the sextet, who interact collectively in an assertive concert that features extraordinary technique and intent listening. It's a thoroughly modern example of free improvisation, with orchestration that makes the group at times sound like an inclusive chamber unit while still holding its free jazz roots.
