Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"First release on Esquilo's new DVD series, Incite Series, featuring audiovisual works of contemporary electroacustic improvisation and composition music and video art.

MASS is a collective intermedia project, featuring Looper (Nikos Veliotis, Martin Küchen, Ingar Zach) and John Tilbury, which integrates image and sound to reach a deeper conceptual level that brings open questions about human thoughts and beliefs to the foreground.

The visual side of MASS is realised by Nikos Veliotis and consists of religious images gathered from websites that advertise religion, any religion. The pictures are overlaid and animated in a soft pendulum motion, attempting to somehow detach religion from its obsessive quest for absolute truth.

MASS' audio material counterpoints the visual content in terms of constant long and lowercase stretches of sound, interspersed with soft chords and silences, paradoxically retaining a certain religious resonance. The musicians engage in a dialogue by producing a subtle sonic environment, providing the spectator with a suspended situation in which to submerge himself, dislocating him from the casual perception of time and space.

The DVD contains 2 audio tracks recorded live in Oslo and Stavanger. Bonus features include 3 video excerpts from the Stavanger onstage performance.

This edition comes in a gatefold black deluxe cardboard case with golden letterwork."-Esquilo Records

Artist Biographies

"Not many Greek improvisers have made names for themselves on the European free music scene; Nikos Veliotis did it by connecting with British musicians in the late '90s while researching issues relating to the performance of graphic scores at Trinity College of Music in London. As a cellist, Veliotis is manifestly interested in extending the sound-making possibilities of his instrument. He's a member of the trio Cranc with harpist Rhodri Davies and violinist Angharad Davies. He's also played with the London Improviser's Orchestra and in duos with guitarist John Bisset and cellist John Wastell. Veliotis is a dedicated performer of contemporary classical works by composers such as Xenakis, Sculthorpe, Cardew, and Bussotti. He's also a member of Texturizer, a duo with Greek electronica artist Coti K. Veliotis has played on an ad hoc basis with Evan Parker, Fred Van Hove, and John Butcher, among others. His solo album, Cello (2001), was issued in limited edition with 100 CDs on the Confront label. Veliotis was the curator for the Athens offshoot of 2:13, a pan-European improvisation club that also has branches in London and Berlin."

"John Tilbury (born 1 February 1936) is a British pianist. He is considered one of the foremost interpreters of Morton Feldman's music, and since 1980 has been a member of the free improvisation group AMM.

Tilbury studied piano at the Royal College of Music with Arthur Alexander and James Gibb and also with Zbigniew Drzewiecki in Warsaw. 1968 he was the winner of the Gaudeamus competition in the Netherlands.

During the 1960s, Tilbury was closely associated with the composer Cornelius Cardew, whose music he has interpreted and recorded and a member of the Scratch Orchestra. His biography of Cardew, "Cornelius Cardew - A life unfinished" was published in 2008.

Tilbury has also recorded the works of Howard Skempton and John White, among many others, and has also performed adaptations of the radio plays of Samuel Beckett.

With guitarist AMM bandmate Keith Rowe's electroacoustic ensemble M.I.M.E.O., Tilbury recorded The Hands of Caravaggio, inspired by the painter's The Taking of Christ {1602). In this live performance, twelve of the members of M.I.M.E.O. were positioned around the piano in a deliberate echo of Christ's Last Supper. The thirteenth M.I.M.E.O. member (Cor Fuhler) is credited with "inside piano" as he interacted and interfered with Tilbury's playing by manipulating and damping the instrument's strings, essentially doing piano preparation in real time. Critic Brian Olewnick describes the album as "A staggering achievement, one is tempted to call The Hands of Caravaggio the first great piano concerto of the 21st century."

Another notable recent recording of Tilbury's was Duos for Doris (like The Hands of Caravaggio also on Erstwhile Records), a collaboration with Keith Rowe. It is widely considered a landmark recording in the genre of electroacoustic improvisation (or "EAI").

In 2013 he collaborated with artist Armando Lulaj in FIEND performance at the National Theatre of Tirana (Albania)."
