Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"The debut album by these young, excellent musicians blends original compositions and improvisations into a dynamic and open contemporary jazz.

This modern jazz trio has a fluid, nuanced sound, and its debut album delivers surprisingly varied dynamics. Through experiments in rhythm, melody and texture, the group finds its own musical identity, in which rock and contemporary chamber music influences meet without being obviously felt. Irradiating curiosity, the open-ended sound of the trio is alluring, as it always offers something new to discover. The playing is articulated, interactive, and it marvelously conveys the creative spirit and collective fun of the three musicians.

Philippe Lauzier, Miles Perkin and Robbie Kuster have been working as a trio for the past year. They perform regularly together and separately in a number of other groups. They recorded Today is a Special Day in December 2005; the title commemorates that day they spent creating together."-Ambiance Magnetiques

Artist Biographies

"Composer, improviser, instrumentalist (clarinet & saxophone) and sound artist, Philippe Lauzier participates in several projects that tour regularly in Canada and Europe, but also in USA, Latine America and Australia. In his solo and collective work, his ideas incorporate influences of contemporary musical languages as well as sounds from non-Western sources. Creative extended techniques, complex drones from which polyphonies emerge, and a certain compositional rigour are typical of his style. His interest for collaborative intermedia practices also leads him to create sound installation pieces, live performances for contemporary dance, theater music and many sound designs for visual art projects. Philippe lives in Montreal, Quebec."

"Miles Perkin (b. 1980) A unique voice on the Double Bass, his captivating solo sets juxtapose his clear singing voice against the wild overtones and deep resonances projecting from his bass. He uses a unique combination of conventional, extended and invented techniques along with unconventional tools and re-amping to extract a vast palate of sounds from his bass. Following up on his 2019 quartet release ::The Point In Question:: on Clean Feed Records with Tom Arthurs, Benoit Delbecq and Jim Black, his recently completed solo album ::Subtones:: was released in 2020.

Based in Berlin since 2010, he is an active collaborator on the international music scene, working with musicians such as Michael Attias, Kris Davis, Benoit Delbecq, Johanna Borchert, Simon Jermyn, Jim Black, Jacobien Vlasman, Achim Kaufmann, Craig Taborn, Tobias Delius, Ralph Alessi, Eve Risser, Maciej Obara, Yorgos Dimitriadis, Markus Pesonen, Magda Mayas, Samuel Rohrer, Peter Van Huffel, Kim Myhr and many others. He is also a music maker for Theatre productions in Germany, composing and performing his works live on stage at major theatres such as: Deutsches Theater Berlin, Staatstheater Stuttgart, Theater Bremen, Kammerspiele Munich, Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, Schaubühne Berlin, and Staatstheater Dresden. "Born in Switzerland, Robbie Kuster moved to Canada in 1990 and adopted Montréal in 2000. He now performs in many Montréal based projects such as the Patrick Watson group, the Large Ensemble, the Philippe Lauzier Trio/Quartet, Gods of Taste and the Yannick Rieu Non Acoustic Project. His musical direction has modern tendencies as he likes to experiment with sounds both acoustically and electronically. However, his drumming remains organic and is essentially jazz influenced."
