Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"The material Tim had been sending me was sometimes a piece we had played, often a mere sketch or a short musical idea...we had performed a couple of them together, but most of what I chose to record was new to me. During the year 2021, sound engineer Pierre-Henri Thiebaut and I spent three weeks recording and mixing at my place; we also went to a studio nearby to record some acoustic guitars and percussion, and the horns, cello and voices were recorded by Antonin Rayon in his studio.

I had already recorded three solo albums, and also played some of Tim's music as solo pieces on his album 'The Sevens' and I wanted to take the concept somewhere else. Recording at home gave me the opportunity to choose the format, instrumentation and colors required by each piece, but moreover, I sought to present Tim's music which has meant so much for me in the past thirty years in various lights and shades: there are numerous echoes in Palm Sweat, from the vague memory of Hemphill's 'Dogon A.D.' at the beginning of the opening track to an allusion to the piece 'Sci-Fi,' as well as Tim's voice which can be heard -somewhat distorted - at one point.

I chose to "unfold" Tim's compositions in my own way, at times stretching a melodic line into a series of pitches and dynamics, often using canons, inversions and retrograde melodies to enrich the given structure or create new ones, and sometimes adding chords to a melody or extracting a rhythmic cell to use it as a starting point for other developments. I was mainly concerned with the shape of the album, trying to provide a sort of musical landscape in which the listener could wander - that is why there is very little solo or improvisation on a form; instead of a linear shape I tried to put emphasis on color, texture and development."-Marc Ducret, December 2022

Artist Biographies

"Guitarist Marc Ducret was born in Paris in 1957. A self-taught musician, he began working in various groups (dance and folk included), and in the studio, before reaching the age of 20. In 1986, he became a member of the first French National Jazz Orchestra. Also in the late '80s, Ducret led his own trio and toured Europe, Africa, and Asia. In 1991, he began working with Tim Berne and went on to play with Berne in Caos Totale, Bloodcount, and Big Satan. Ducret has several solo recordings to his credit, released on Berne's Screwgun label and the Winter & Winter label. In the late '90s, Ducret formed a tentet, Seven Songs, to explore music of the '60s."-Joslyn Layne

"Sylvaine Hélary, enjoying a solid classical training, having plunged into the vertigo of improvisation with Bernard Lubat, this flutist is one of those soloists who establish a natural link between contemporary music, jazz and various currents of new music. Her curiosity leads her to projects that are often multidisciplinary, such as Spring.

She was part of the Surnatural Orchestra for ten years. She plays in duet with Noémi Boutin (Myssil and show young public Entre Chou and Loup), recently includes the new sextet of Marc Ducret (Chronicles of the frozen sea), Ensemble Dédales by Dominique Pifarély, Didier Levallet's quintet Croise), Ève Risser (White Desert Orchestra), Morgen Naughties (Tam De Villiers and Karsten Hochapfel), and Michel Édelin's quintet (Flute Fever).

She is invited to be part of the new creation of Alexandra Grimal (Steam over rice) and Jozef Dumoulin's next quintet. She collaborates with many musicians such as Robin Fincker, John Niekrasz, Marco Quaresimin, Nicole Mitchell, Edward Perraud, YJN (D. Yvinec), Dgiz, Dominique A and Fantazio. New York (Kris Davis, Matt Mitchell, Tim Berne, Dan Weiss, Ingrid Laubrock, Tom Rainey) and Chicago (The Bridge # 5 with Eve Risser, Mike Reed, Fred Lonberg-Holm). She realizes her dreams of writing and composition in her acoustic quartet Spring Roll (Antonin Rayon, Sylvain Lemêtre and Hugues Mayot), her trio (Antonin Rayon and Emmanuel Scarpa) and her new quartet Glowing Life Ray, Benjamin Glibert, John Niekrasz)."

"Born in 1971 in Mulhouse, from the musical milieu of harmony orchestras, she studied at the Conservatory of Mulhouse, then at the CNSM of Paris (1st Prize of trombone 1992 and chamber music 1991) and Univer- sity Paris X Nanterre (Bachelor of Modern Letters). Attracted by the exploration of new repertoires, she completed her training by studying saqueboute with Franck Poitrineau, and followed some courses of contemporary improvisation notably with Yves Robert. Since 1997, she plays the old repertoire with ensembles La Fenice (Jean Tubéry), Concerto vocale (René Jacobs), Elyma (Gabriel Garrido), Akademia, Il Giardino Armonico, Doulce Mémoire, the Versailles Baroque Music Center, The Talens lyriques (Christophe Rousset), Les Meslanges (T.Van Essen). At the same time, she plays music today (creations by Vincent Bouchot, Etienne Rolin, Martin Matalon, Claude Barthélémy, Jeunes compositeurs concerts at Radio France, ensembles Ars Nova, Zellig, Berson-Aschour duo, Orchestra Poitou Charentes) . It finds more and more in the music resulting from the jazz and the improvisation a space of privileged expression. She plays in the projects of Dominique Pifarély (Dédales), Marc Ducret (Chronicles of the frozen sea and Real thing 3), Joëlle Léandre (Can you here me), Kent Carter (oratorios). She also accompanies poets on their texts, (Lucien Suel, Emmanuel Laugier, Claude Favre, Valerie Rouzeau). She develops personal and collective projects such as "Les Cannibales" with Vincent Boisseau and Julien Padovani (2005-2008), and currently the Quartet Tenements of clover (on poems by Emilly Dickinson) Merch "with Jean-Luc Foussat, Makoto Sato, Jean-Luc, Jean-Luc Mousset, Lucas Mousset and Jean-Luc Petit. Small.

Holder of the C.A. obtained at the age of 21, she teaches the trombone at the Conservatory with Regional Radiation of Poitiers"
