"Improvised music is necessarily a result of various relationships across space and time; watching development in the music is in some way the same as observing the growth and development of interpersonal relationships. Transformation of one is indeed the transformation of all.

Nathan and I have played together in various formations for nearly 9 years now, in formats including duo, trio with Peter Kuhn, and varied ensembles playing our own and others compositions. The first time I met Dan Clucas must have been at a concert by dependent origination - Peter Kuhn, Dan Clucas, Dave Sewelson, Scott Walton, and Alex Cline. By that time, Nathan and I had been playing regularly with Peter; the seeds for this recording had been planted. In the following years, Dan played with the Kuhn Trio a handful of times, the first time - if memory serves me accurately - at Bread and Salt in San Diego. Later Dan would invite Nathan and I to play on his large ensemble composition After Upingos at the Beginning to End fest in Los Angeles.

When, in 2021, I planned a return to California for a few months, one of the first things I wanted to do was play a session with Dan and Nathan. The moments of trio playing occurred in the previous settings, this recording is the first explicit trio outing of the group. The first track here in contains the first notes we played together in just over 2 years; it was like coming home.

Music, particularly the improvised variety, involves transformation on all levels. Musical materials themselves transform and develop locally on the scale of individual sounds and phrases and on a macro scale in terms of large-scale form within a performance or set, or, even wider scale; a work or groups identity in / through time. The musical event is a social ritual where people and relationships are changed through participation in the work and in being together.

Recent years have people thinking more about the non-linearity and fragmentation of time for quite a while, I've been interested in how it could be that time is created by events or action. This had first occurred to me as a bass player, noticing how velocity changes the perception of time, and later came by the writings of Eihei Dogen and Dainin Katagiri which pointed to this in a larger sense.

This title, Daydream and Halting, is borrowed from the first lines of Fred Moten's laura (made me listen to (from the collection The Little Edges). Reading the first phrase reminded me, in maybe an oblique way, what it was like both to play and listen back to the music with Dan and Nathan again, after a year where our collective procession of time felt shattered. The clarity, incision, enjoy of the music felt like an awakening from the haze of non-events surrounding. Or a dream of its own."-Kyle Motl, March 2022

"Dan Clucas is a trumpet player and composer living and working in Los Angeles. Born in Anaheim, California in 1966, he began playing trumpet at age ten, soon thereafter discovering the music of Dizzy Gillespie, which in turn led to a lifelong study of and respect for the African American music known as jazz. While he strives for individual statement in his music, Clucas also strives to acknowledge the imprint of past masters, from Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington to Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra. He has studied with Bobby Bradford and Wadada Leo Smith, and has performed and recorded over the last two decades with such L.A. luminaries as Nels Cline, Alex Cline, Steuart Liebig, Vinny Golia, Joe Baiza, Rich West, and Michael Vlatkovich, to name a few."

"Kyle Motl is a bassist, composer, and improviser. Active in a variety of ensembles and settings, Kyle's work crosses the boundaries between idioms as wide as free jazz, contemporary concert music, and extreme metal. Current interests include extended harmonic techniques for solo bass improvisation, electroacoustic performance with live electronics and improvising software, modular compositional schemes, recursive and generative structuring, and exploration of complex sonic spectra.

Kyle is a member of the Peter Kuhn Trio, and has been performing in quartet and trio with Abbey Rader since 2011. He maintains regular duo projects with T.J. Borden, Adam Tinkle, and Drew Ceccato. The Kyle Motl Trio, featuring Kjell Nordeson and Tobin Chodos is a collaborative platform for new compositions weaving complex structures together with free improvisation. Kyle has performed alongside artists including Anthony Davis, Kidd Jordan, Mary Halvorson, Roscoe Mitchell, Mark Dresser, and Wadada Leo Smith, among others.

Kyle holds a BM from Florida Atlantic University and an MM from Florida International University. He is a DMA candidate at UC San Diego, where he studies bass with Mark Dresser."

"Percussionist/Composer/Instrument Builder Nathan Hubbard works in many different fields, but in general his work shows a decided interest in exploring the possibilities of sound and embracing the passing of time. This interest in sound can be seen in everything from his extended sound language as an improvisor to his homemade and found instruments. The different rates of passing time become relevant as both a rhythmic impetus and defining element in his compositions and their changing definitions of form, shape and outcome. Musically his explorations range from solo improvisations through small group collaborations to large scale compositions for his twenty-six member large ensemble, Skeleton Key Orchestra. As a composer his works range from solo pieces to medium scale works for a variety of ensembles, works for tape, electronics and acoustic instruments, large works for orchestras, creative orchestras and traditional big bands as well as pieces involving text, voice and other media. In the last several years Hubbard has been more involved with musical situations incorporating acoustics, enviroments and field recordings. His work as an artist can be seen on several of his CD covers and his work as an engineer and producer can be heard on almost all of his recordings. His current projects include solo performances, collaborations with Curtis Glatter (Glatter/Hubbard) and ARC Trio, as well as leading his own quintet (Nathan Hubbard/Passengers) and the large ensemble Nathan Hubbard Skeleton Key Orchestra. In addition to all this work, Hubbard has performed and/or recorded with artists such as Jacob Adler, Roger Aplon, David Borgo, Paul Carman, Castanets, Alex Cline, Anthony Davis, Michael Dessen, Mark Dresser, Tim DuRoche, Brad Dutz, Harris Eisenstadt, Marcos Fernandes, Justin Grinnell, Vinny Golia, Phillip Greenlief, Rick Helzer, Bill Horist, Mike Keneally, Paul Kikuchi, Ted Killian, Steuart Liebig, George Lewis, Doug Lunn, Noah Phillips, Garth Powell, Rafter, Jason Robinson, Tim Root, Scott Rosenberg, Jim Ryan, Chris Schlarb, Theodore Sistrunk, Moe!
