Thomas Mießgang writes about the music in the liner notes: "(...) Is it jazz? Is it contemporary music? Is that the throbbing motor of rock-and-roll in there? The answer is yes - all of it serves as raw material, says composer Anthony Coleman. He loves to spring wildly between genres, between styles, contrasting biomes.(...)"

ABOUT STUDIO DAN

Founded in 2005 by composer, ensemble director, producer and trombonist Daniel Riegler for the inaugural JazzWerkstatt Wien festival, Studio Dan began life as a big band but has since grown into a flexible new music ensemble, performing in various permutations depending on the project. The group operates on the borders between diverse subgenres of contemporary music: improvisation, new music, jazz, art rock, and others. Studio Dan has collaborated with composers and soloists including Vinko Globokar, Elliott Sharp, Michel Doneda, and Friedrich Cerha, and have performed on several internationally-renowned stages such as Wien Modern, Kampnagel Hamburg, musikprotokoll graz, and the Tagen fŸr Neue Musik in Zurich."

"Sophia Goidinger-Koch (1987) lives in Vienna and works as a freelance musician in contemporary and improvised music.

Ms. Goidinger-Koch is violinist and violist of Studio Dan. She is also cofounder of strings&noise (with Maiken Beer) and Hedda (with Klaus Haidl). She is a frequent guest with many other ensembles and orchestras including Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Schallfeld and Ensemble Phace.
 She has had the opportunity to work with musicians and composers including Vinko Globokar, Michel Doneda, Elliott Sharp, Gunter Schneider, Burkhard Stangl, Renald Deppe, Frank Gratkowski, Clemens Wenger, Maja Osojnik, and Daniel Riegler; and she has attended masterclasses and workshops with Christian Wolff, Pierluigi Billone, Francesco Filidei, Georg Friedrich Haas, Ernst Kovacic as well as with Klangforum Wien.

Ms. Goidinger-Koch has played numerous concerts in Austria and abroad. Highlights have included the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Vienna Musikverein, Porgy&Bess, Wiener Festwochen, Salzburger Festspiele, Kampnagel Hamburg, Zappanale Bad Doberan, and EXPO Mailand (2015).

She studied violin and viola at the Mozarteum Innsbruck with Christos Kanettis, at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Univ.-Prof. Thomas Fheodoroff. 2015 she graduated with honors from "Performance Practice in Contemporary Music" with Klangforum Vienna at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz."

"Maiken Beer, born in 1977 in Vienna, is a freelance cellist for classical, contemporary, and improvised music. She is the founder of the duo "celloduoburghardbeer" and a member of the Black Page Orchestra. She has also worked with, among many others, Clemens Wenger, Matthias Kranebitter, Julia Purgina, Mirela Ivičević, the JazzWerkstatt Vienna, Neue Oper Wien, snim, Ensemble szene instrumental, Janus Ensemble, and Ensemble Reconsil."

"Born and raised in Carinthia, Austria, Philipp currently lives and works in Vienna. As a bass player (electric and double bass) he is active in different genres of music. In his past projects he has been involved in progressive metal and rock music, hip-hop, free improvisation, jazz, and contemporary music. As a composer he is always searching for new sound structures, the unconventional and progressive, ideas that cross interdisciplinary and cultural boundaries.

Since 2015 he has been a member of the Viennese society FREIFELD, whose aim it is to support the progressive music scene in Vienna and on whose label FREIFELD TONTRAEGER he has released all of his music to date."

"Doris Nicoletti was born in Graz and received her first music lessons at the conservatory in her hometown. After graduating from high school, she moved to the J.M.Hauer Conservatory in Wiener Neustadt and at the same time completed a degree in sociology at the University of Vienna. In 2005 she continued her flute studies with Barbara Gisler-Haase at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Other important teachers included Eva Furrer (Klangforum Wien), Philippe Bernold (CNSMD Lyon) and Chiara Tonelli (Mahler Chamber Orchestra).

After receiving her concert diploma with distinction, she received the Federal Chancellery's starting grant for music and performing arts, which supported her committed collaboration with the young composer scene and the innovative musical projects that resulted from it. In the years that followed, she managed to be accepted three times with different formations into the NASOM (The New Austrian Sound of Music) funding program of the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs (BMEIA).

In addition to the PHACE ensemble, she is currently a member of Studio Dan (www.studiodan.at), the Synesthetic Octet (www.synestheticoctet.com) and the Ensemble of the Lucerne Festival Alumni. "Dominik Fuss (B.A. B.A.) is a trumpet player & composer from Vienna, Austria.

Born into a musical family, aged 7 he found out that he wants to be a trumpet player, after investing his lunch money for a whole school camp week, into a 10 CD-collection of Louis Armstrong.

PictureHe studied in several universities (Vienna, Cologne, Graz...) and graduated with honors in jazz- trumpet & classical trumpet (-education).

After his graduation he won the first prize for trumpet at the International Jazzsolist-Award "MasterJam Fest" in Odessa Ukraine, alongside other prize winners like Joey Alexander (US), Yissy Garcia (Cuba) & others.

In the recent years he played around the globe, released his europewide acclaimed debut-Album "Ethology" (2016/ Dominik Fuss' Rumpus) and initiated and leaded large ensembles like the Spittelberg JazzOrchestra, an young all-star big band playing new vienesse composers and their music.

A bit later he started the family band Affair Dreyfuss (Affäre Dreyfuss): a band containing three members of one family (fuss), playing originals and arrangements from the bop-era and beyond. They released the album "In Good Company" last year (2018) in june.

His newest project is the Duo Fuss/Leichtfried. Together they explore the borders between jazz tradition, classical and modern music, and played already all around the world together: Vietnam, Malaysia, Tunisia & Montenegro."

"Daniel Riegler Ð Trombone, Composition. Born in 1977, Graz, Austria.

Works as a freelance trombonist, composer, ensemble director and producer of improvised, contemporary and jazz-related music. As a trombonist he regularly performs with the Klangforum Wien, as a composer and ensemble leader, he received commissions from renowned ensembles and institutions (21er Haus Wien, ensemble fŸr neue musik zŸrich, NDR Big Band, Jazz Festival Saalfelden É).

"Anthony Coleman (born August 30, 1955) is an avant-garde jazz pianist. During the 1980s and 1990s he worked with John Zorn on Cobra, Kristallnacht, The Big Gundown, Archery, and Spillane and helped push modern Jewish music into the 21st century.

At the age of thirteen, Coleman started studying piano with Jaki Byard. At the New England Conservatory of Music he studied with George Russell, Donald Martino and Malcolm Peyton.

Coleman's collaborators over the years have included guitarist Elliott Sharp, trumpeter Dave Douglas, accordion player Guy Klucevsek, composer David Shea, former Captain Beefheart bandmember Gary Lucas, classical and klezmer clarinetist David Krakauer, guitarist Marc Ribot, bassist Greg Cohen, drummer Joey Baron and saxophonist Roy Nathanson.

Coleman's compositions and solo work reflect his interest in his Jewish background. His groups Sephardic Tinge and Selfhaters in the 1990s explored both the lively, rich and exuberant musical legacy as well as darkly described the lamentation of a minority culture in Diaspora. Sephardic Tinge toured extensively, especially throughout Europe, in the 1990s and the early 2000s.

Coleman's Disco by Night is a work inspired by his visit to his family's homeland of Yugoslavia and was his first major solo record released by Japan's Avant Records in 1992. Shmutsige Magnaten, in which he played the songs of Yiddish folk composer Mordechai Gebirtig, a victim of the Holocaust was also released by Tzadik Records in 2006. It was recorded live at midnight in the oldest synagogue of Kraków, Poland, a few steps away from Gebirtig's birthplace during the annual Kraków Jewish Music Festival in 2005.

His duo albums, The Coming Great Millenium, Lobster & Friend, and I Could've Been a Drum with Roy Nathanson, mostly explore the fun, frivolous and joyous alongside the nostalgic hearts and minds of Jews in modern and old America. These recordings typify Coleman's "free" playing style as well as his multi-instrumental capabilities with him also operating samplers, trombones, percussion as well as piano and voice. Coleman and Nathanson have performed all over the U.S. and Europe.

Coleman is also an accomplished composer with many works being commissioned by numerous ensembles including the 2006 work Pushy Blueness which was released on Tzadik.

His work includes Damaged by Sunlight, issued on DVD in France by La Huit, the album Freakish: Anthony Coleman plays Jelly Roll Morton (Tzadik); a monthlong residency in Venice as a guest of Venetian Heritage, a commission for the Parisian Ensemble Erik Satie: Echoes From Elsewhere; tours of Japan and Europe with guitarist Marc Ribot's band Los Cubanos Postizos; a lecture/performance as part of the symposium "Anton Webern und das Komponieren im 20 Jahrhundert" (Neue Perspektiven, Basel, Switzerland) and a commission from the String Orchestra of Brooklyn (Empfindsamer).

He has been on the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music since 2005 and Mannes College New School for Music since 2012. His album The End of Summer features his NEC Ensemble Survivors Breakfast.

Coleman has degrees in composition from the New England Conservatory of Music and the Yale School of Music and attended Mauricio Kagel's seminar at Centre Acanthes in Aix-en-Provence, France. He has received grants and residencies from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Djerassi Colony, the Civitella Ranieri Center, the Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg Kulturbehörde and the Yellow Springs Arts Center. He spent the spring semester of 2003 teaching theory and composition at Bennington College in Vermont. In 2004 he was the subject of a three-day festival, Abstract Adventures, in Brussels, Belgium.

Coleman writes articles for All About Jazz and Bomb magazine and was a contributor to John Zorn's essay collection Arcana: Musicians on Music in 2000.

In the mid 1990s, Coleman appeared in Sabbath in Paradise, Claudia Heuermann's documentary about Jewish music in the avant-garde downtown scene in New York, A Bookshelf on Top of the Sky, Heuermann's documentary about John Zorn, and Following Eden. In 2005 Coleman was interviewed for the Marc Ribot documentary The Lost String, directed by Anais Prosaic."
