Based on the improvisations and sounds generated by soprano/sopranino saxophone player Michel Doneda, composer and Studio Dan director Daniel Riegler developed this work, at the intersection of Doneda's radical tonal language and Riegler's idiosyncratic music, performed live at Stanica Zilina in Slovakia in 2012 with an ensemble including Doneda himself.

"Fanfare III is a project together with french saxophonist Michel Doneda. Based solely on the sound of his instruments used in his solo improvisations, a full-length composition (Daniel Riegler) was developed. The basic tonal material was prepared based on the acoustic, spectral and the aesthetic analysis Doneda«s recordings. Formally, the piece is a highly developed intertwining of improvisation and composition. Michel Doneda operates soloistically, also on stage he is situated in the centre of the ensemble. His improvisational interventions hitting the detailed orchestral material. The specific spatial situation of the performance space is always utilized."-Studio Dan

ABOUT STUDIO DAN

Founded in 2005 by composer, ensemble director, producer and trombonist Daniel Riegler for the inaugural JazzWerkstatt Wien festival, Studio Dan began life as a big band but has since grown into a flexible new music ensemble, performing in various permutations depending on the project. The group operates on the borders between diverse subgenres of contemporary music: improvisation, new music, jazz, art rock, and others. Studio Dan has collaborated with composers and soloists including Vinko Globokar, Elliott Sharp, Michel Doneda, and Friedrich Cerha, and have performed on several internationally-renowned stages such as Wien Modern, Kampnagel Hamburg, musikprotokoll graz, and the Tagen fŸr Neue Musik in Zurich.

"Julia Purgina (composer / viola)

Born in Straubing, Germany in 1980, Austrian composer and Violist Julia Purgina studied viola with Wolfgang Klos and composition with Erich Urbanner and Chaya Czernowin at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Additionally she was a student of Ulrich Knörzer at the Berlin University of the Arts. Ms. Purgina holds a double masters degree in viola and composition from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Additionally, she is interested in Philology and has started studies in German and Slovak Languages at the Vienna University in 2011.

Julia Purgina has received numerous prizes and scholarships including the Theodor Körner Prize, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra Stipend, the Viktor Fohn Stipend, the Antonio Salieri Composition Prize, the Startstipendium 2009 and the Staatsstipendium for composers 2013 from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture.

From 1999-2004 she was a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. Ms. Purgina played in the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra from 2004-2007. Though her primary focus is on the performance of modern music, she also performs frequently with orchestras such as the Wiener Kammerorchester, the Vienna Volksoper, the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria and the Wiener Kammerphilharmonie. She is co-founder of ensemble LUX and was a member of Ensemble Reconsil and the jazz group Studio Dan. She performed Roland Freisitzer's Viola Concerto as a soloist with Ensemble Reconsil in Vienna and composers such as Erich Urbanner, Ivo Nilsson and Thomas Heinisch have writiten viola concertos (or double concertos including the viola as solo instrument) which are dedicated to her. In Spring 2010, Ms. Purgina performed her own viola concerto and a composition for viola and ensemble by Bruno Stobl with Studio New Music Moscow in the Rachmaninov Hall in the Tschaikovsky Conservatory. As a composer, Julia Purgina has had commissions and performances from the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Wien Modern, Hugo Wolf Quartet, Ensemble Kontrapunkte, Ensemble Reconsil Vienna, oenm, Aspekte Festival, Ensemble XX. Jahrhundert, sirene operntheater, Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, Platypus Ensemble, Studio Dan, Ensemble Wiener Collage, the Theater in Kempten (Germany) and the Haydn Trio Eisenstadt, among others. Her work has been conducted by conductors like Sylvain Cambreling, Andrew Manze, Stefan Solyom, Roland Freisitzer, Peter Keuschnig, Peter Burwik, Mei-Ann Chen, Cecilia Martin-Löf, Eugene Tzigane, Gemma New and others. "Maria Jauk comes from Lobmingtal/Styria and began her musical education at pre-school age. She found her way to the flute through recorder and piano lessons. "Mario Rom (* 1990 in Hall near Admont) is an Austrian jazz musician (trumpet, composition).

At the age of eight, Rome received his first trumpet lessons from his father, with whom he also played in the school big band in Admont. From 2004 to 2013 he studied classical trumpet at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz with Josef Eidenberger. "Born into a musical farm family in Northern Maine, Philip Yaeger learned to sing as soon as he could talk. At the age of ten he began playing the trombone, and soon discovered his first great love (in the inanimate sense): jazz. He attended William Paterson University, studying under Rufus Reid, Sy Johnson, Steve Turre, Conrad Herwig, and Ed Neumeister, (et al) and received a bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance in 1999. He subsequently moved to New York City, and later to Philadelphia.

In 2004 Yaeger relocated to Austria, where he annexed a master's degree at the Kunstuniversität Graz, studying (again) with Ed Neumeister and, briefly, the composer Georg Friedrich Haas, among other. He subsequently moved to Vienna, where he lives and works to this day.

Yaeger is active as a trombonist, composer/arranger, and occasional vocalist. "Werner Angerer was born in St. Pölten, on June 15, 1980. He started his studies for sound engineering at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and passed the second diploma examination with distinction. The transition from studying to working as a self-employed sound engineer was smooth and since 2003, Werner Angerer has been in charge of the WUK-Sound Studios. He has made full use of this opportunity, actively contributing to the young music scene and realising numerous CD productions with musicians of his surroundings.

In March 2005, he played an important role in the organisation of the first festival of 'Jazzwerkstadt Wien'and he is still responsible for the sound design of most events and productions of this group.

Since 2004, Werner Angerer has been a permanent member of the live sound reinforcement crew of WUK events and has worked with numerous well-known national and international artists, both as monitor and FOH-engineer.

His numerous further activities as FOH-engineer are manifold and range from pop/rockbands to contemporary bigbands. Other examples for his numerous activities is his responsibility for the sound direction of Ensembles Studio Dan and Birgit Denk&Band.

"Michel Doneda (F) soprano saxophone, born in 1954, comes from the French South-West. He is a self-taught musician.

In 1980 he founded in Toulouse a reed trio: HIC ET NUNC, a group that toured quite a lot in France, playing mostly improvised music. At the same time he founded with musicians, dancers and actors a place called IREA (Institute for research and exchange between arts of improvisation).

In the following years, he participated in music projects with other artists and he became a regular guest of the Chantenay-Villedieu festival. Meeting other artists he developed a very personal approach with his music and his instrument in improvised music. During this period he played with Europeans musicians: Fred Van Hove, Phil Wachsmann, Max Eastley, Steve Beresford and Americans: John Zorn, Eliott Sharp, Elvin Jones

In 1985 he made his first record under his own name: TERRA (Nato record). At the same time he started playing regurlarly with Lê Quan Ninh, Daunik Lazro, Benat Achiary, Martine Altenburger, Barre Phillips, Paul Rogers, Tetsu Saitoh, Kazue Sawai.
