Artist Biographies:

"René Lussier (born April 15, 1957) is a musician based in Quebec, Canada. He is a composer, guitarist, bass guitarist, percussionist, bass clarinetist, and singer. Lussier has collaborated with such figures as Fred Frith, Chris Cutler, Jean Derome and Robert M. Lepage. His work, which combines elements from all major genres, is often referred to within the discourse of New Music, or Musiques Actuelles, in French.

Born in Montreal, Lussier began his musical career in 1973 in Chambly as part of the progressive rock group Arpège. From 1976 to 1980, he was a member of the Montreal folk-progressive group Conventum, led by André Duchesne. Lussier was also a member of the groups Quatour de l'Emmieux and les Reins, Nébu and La G.U.M in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1986 he joined Duchesne's Les 4 Guitaristes de l'Apocalypso-Bar.

He began doing soundtrack work in 1979, via a collaboration with Duchesne on the music for a short film called Tanobe. Lussier has written or co-written the scores to more than 35 films, including Chronique d'un génocide annoncé, a documentary by Danièle Lacourse and Yvan Patry about the Rwandan genocide.

Lussier played guitar for the popular singer Pauline Julien between 1982 and 1984, though he also worked on esoteric music that blurred distinctions between progressive rock, jazz, improvisation, modern composition, and circus music. His first solo album, Fin du travail (version I), was released in 1983 and consolidated his reputation as a quirky, humorous and talented guitarist-composer. He has collaborated extensively with Derome and Lepage and has recorded as a member of the Fred Frith Guitar Quartet. Lussier is featured prominently in Step Across the Border (1990), a documentary feature film by Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel about the work and travels of Frith. Lussier was also a member of Frith's band Keep the Dog (1989-1991).

In 1983, Lussier co-founded the Ambiances Magnétiques record label and recording collective with Derome, Lepage and Duchesne, and produced an extensive body of work in this environment. His best known work, Le trésor de la langue (1989), was created during this period. The album interspersed music with taped recordings of Quebec residents discussing the importance of the French language. It won the Grand Prix Paul-Gilson award in 1989.

In the late 1990s, Lussier recorded two albums for solo guitar and a pair of collaborations with Martin Tétreault which reflected an interest in the history of musique concrète and electroacoustic music composition and theory."

"Audio artist, installation and new media, self - taught composer / musician and audio curator residing in Quebec since 1993.

As a curator, he has organized more than a dozen events focusing on audio art and advanced sound creation. He was commissioner for programming at Avatar Center from October 2008 to June 2010. He is also curator for the sound installations section of the Victoriaville Contemporary Music Festival (FIMAV). He is the founder and artistic director of the organization in production and distribution in audio art and new music Tartar.

Concentrating much of his audio research on numerical maximalism, Érick d'Orion performs a work that closely resembles noize, concrete music, free jazz and electroacoustics. He is part of the duo Moulins_de_machines, the trio Bold (with Alexis Bellavance and Nicolas Bernier ) and the trio Napalm Jazz as well as a multitude of ad hoc trainings. He has performed in concert with renowned artists such as Evan Parker, Martin Tétreault, Otomo Yoshihide, Robin Fox, Ilpo Väisänen, Diane Labrosse, Alexandre St-Onge, Bernard Falaise, Sam Shalabi and Günter Müller., Europe, Australia, Cuba, Mexico and the United States of America. He has benefited from several creative residencies everywhere.

In parallel or jointly, he develops installations projects where audio and new technologies are assembled to create works in continuous movements becoming sources as well as audio broadcasters. His reflections focus on the reinterpretation, appropriation and re-reading of certain concepts of art history, in particular concrete music, dadaism and futurism, all without being backward. The redefinition of acoustic space and the relationship between the viewer's imagination and images, objects, environments and familiar or falsely mythical icons form an integral part of his installation work.

He is or has been a member of several boards of directors in the field of art : The White House, the collective media arts, Perte de Signal, Rhizomes productions, RCAAQ, CHYZ radio..."

"Born in Switzerland, Robbie Kuster moved to Canada in 1990 and adopted Montréal in 2000. He now performs in many Montréal based projects such as the Patrick Watson group, the Large Ensemble, the Philippe Lauzier Trio/Quartet, Gods of Taste and the Yannick Rieu Non Acoustic Project. His musical direction has modern tendencies as he likes to experiment with sounds both acoustically and electronically. However, his drumming remains organic and is essentially jazz influenced."

From the Victo 2021 Festival Program:

"Did you know that 2 + 2 + 2 = 4? Because what we have here are three duos, for a total of four musicians brought together for a collective improvisation event organized especially for this unusual edition of FIMAV.

Do we really need to introduce RENÉ LUSSIER? At his last performance in Victoriaville, the guitarist presented his fantastic Quintette, in which drummer ROBBIE KUSTER plays. However, over twenty years ago he developed an ear-popping noise-based duo with MARTIN TÉTREAULT that carried on for a few years and produced some stunning records.

KUSTER, who has been working with LUSSIER in several projects lately, is best known as the long-standing drummer in Patrick Watson's band. However, KUSTER has also worked with Yannick Rieu, Philippe Lauzier and Marianne Trudel.

For a while now, TÉTREAULT-the king of the detoured turntable-has been fine-tuning a high-calibre noise duo with quirky electronics master ÉRICK d'ORION (who is or has been a member of Napalm Jazz, morceaux_de_machines, and BOLD). They already have two albums to their credit.

Four seasoned improvisers, each an iconoclast in his own way, promising unpredictable results that we cannot wait to hear!"
