Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"The EUPHORIUM_freakestra live in December 2005. On one exciting stage in Leipzig, the creative centre of eastern Germany. At least a home game for the ever transforming ensemble. This time you can experience creative improvised music of young and talented twens, reliable and distinct musicians in their thirties and one legendary grandmaster.

The project is about some constellations i.e. personal variations of contemporary chamber jazz. Two drummerless trios meet two drummers. There are really intense improvisations from the trio consisting of trumpeter Matthias Mainz, cello player Matthias Lorenz and bass player Michael Haves. Strongly concentrated they are able to reduce the material. That is about to begin with nothing.

The other drummerless trio comes along with Fabian Niermann on tenor saxophone, Konrad Gruneberg on double bass and Oliver Schwerdt on the grand piano. Trustful together they are moving musically in a free associating manner, picking this up, turning that around, discovering another sandwich in a swinging abstract flow.

Then you have Christian Lillinger the hyperactive-pulsating centre of the youngsters jazz-drumming in Germany and his mentor Gunter Baby Sommer, who is one of the grandmasters of contemporary percussion. Both integrate their music into the different trio contextures. Both meet each other in a unique duo play. And both you can hear trio-coupled within the fabulous sound of the whole octet.

Besides that the booklet presents four lyrical addresses of speaker-actor Friedrich Kettlitz proclaimed before and after the musical things happened. Of course these fascinating, neo-dadaistic, German based words can be seen as wonderful music too..."-Rigobert Dittmann

Artist Biographies

"Since the end of his music studies at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen and the Musikhochschule Köln, Mainz has been realizing works between composed, improvised and electro-acoustic music, media art, dance theater, theater and radio.

In 2001 he founded the interdisciplinary project ensemble realtime research and produced mixed media environments and performances, electro-acoustic music and theater projects until 2012. In connection with the projects, workshops and lecture performances were held at universities, art and music colleges in Germany, Poland, the USA, Turkey and Iran. Mainz has been dealing with questions of transcultural music and its integration into national and international cultural politics since 2012. Research took him to Kabul, Tehran and Istanbul. Mainz has been developing and managing the platform for transcultural new music as an instrument of artistic production and artistic-scientific research since 2015.

His transdisciplinary thinking on which his work is based repeatedly leads to collaborations beyond musical-artistic contexts. The contact with the ethnomusicologists Martin Greve (Istanbul), Azin Movahed (Teheran), Robert Reigle (Istanbul, Los Angeles) and Raimund Vogels (Hannover-Hildesheim) since 2013 opened up new rooms for Mainz to share artistic, musicological and sociological perspectives to bring in connection.

Formative musical influences for Mainz emerged from contacts with teachers and role models of different lengths since 1989, such as the trumpeters Markus Stockhausen, Manfred Schoof and Dave Douglas, the composing pianists Simon Nabatov and Georg Graewe, and the unfortunately deceased trumpeters Laurie Frink and Kenny Wheeler and the composer Johannes Fritsch. Further fleeting, rather coincidental encounters since 1998 with the composers Karlheinz Stockhausen, Györgi Ligeti, Anthony Braxton, Ron Kuivila, Alvin Lucier and David Behrman during studies and stays abroad also left formative impressions, some of which changed the direction of his further work.

Above all, the suggestions that resulted from the intensive collaboration with musicians and artist colleagues since 2001 influenced, shaped and changed the work and self-image of Matthias Mainz decisively - including the computer musicians Prof. Alberto de Campo and Hannes Hölzl, Joker Nies, Alex Gunia, Frank Schulte and Markus Aust, the electronic music producer Boris Polonski from the environment of Can and Mille Plateux, the music performance artist Rochus Aust, the composing improvisation musicians of the Cologne loft / Berlin real-time music and improvisation scenes Carl -Ludwig Hübsch, Matthias Schubert, Frank Gratkowski, Philipp Zoubek and Simon Rummel as well as the media artists Jörg Oswald, Alexander Peterhaensel, Daniel Burkhard, Luis Negron van Grieken, Egbert Mittelstädt and Tessa Knapp and the visual artist Matthias Groebel."

"Oliver Schwerdt (born 13 November 1979) is a German musicologist and musician (piano, percussion) in the field of free improvisation.

Born in Eisenach, Schwerdt attended school in Eisenach until his university entrance qualification and received classical piano lessons at the municipal music school there. He did his military service as a piano accompanist in the training music corps of the German armed forces. He began his studies of music and cultural sciences as well as art history at the Leipzig University in 1999 and completed them in 2006 with a master's thesis on Georg Simmel and Dadaism submitted to Klaus Christian Köhnke [de]. In 2012 he received his doctorate from Sebastian Klotz at the Institute for Musicology at the University of Leipzig [de], for which he also worked as a lecturer. His dissertation focuses on the musical strategies of central actors in the scene of free improvised music in the wake of Free Jazz and their spatial theoretical interpretation. He has taught at the Museum of Musical Instruments of Leipzig University and with the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.

From his musicological work, Schwerdt identified the challenge facing contemporary museum practice in relation to the "reinvention of the drum set combination" as they are "in European improvised music" of the 20th century became reality. He is committed to securing the "acutely endangered, historically so delicate, aesthetically highly fascinating and epistemologically valuable object complexes". the first generation of European free jazz or contemporary improvised music. As an author of music-critical articles, Schwerdt wrote for the Neue Musikzeitung, the Jazzthetik [de] and the Jazzzeitung [de], among others. He also wrote accompanying texts for albums by Günter Sommer/Wadada Leo Smith and Alexander von Schlippenbach/Evan Parker/Paul Lovens and Urs Leimgruber. In 2003 he founded the publishing house Euphorium Productions.

Since 1999 Schwerdt has been artistic director of the EUPHORIUM_freakestra, a project ensemble between contemporary improvisation, jazz, Neue Musik and theatre with Günter Sommer, Friedrich Schenker, Rudi Mahall, Paul Rutherford, Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, Frank Möbus, Wadada Leo Smith, Axel Dörner, Barre Phillips, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Evan Parker, Paul Lovens, Sven-Åke Johansson, Ulrich Gumpert, Manfred Hering, Dietmar Diesner, Roger Turner, Barry Guy, Akira Sakata and others worked together. At the 2009 33. Leipziger Jazztage, he performed with the project Transatlantic Freedom Suite Tentets at the Leipzig Opera.

From the project ensemble the quartet ember with Urs Leimgruber developed, Alexander Schubert and Christian Lillinger. From 2006 to 2016 Schwerdt worked with Lillinger and Petrowsky in the New Old Luten Trio. The recording of Petrowsky's late works, documented from 2013 to 2015 with the albums Tumult!, Krawall!, Rabatz! in a quintet formation expanded by the double bassists John Edwards and Robert Landfermann received great attention. With Schubert and Friedrich Kettlitz, Schwerdt operates the electrified Noise-Ensemble trnn.

In 2006, Schwerdt received the Leipzig Jazz Young Talent Scholarship of the Marion-Ermer-Foundation for his performance as pianist and ensemble leader. The critics Ken Waxman (Jazzword) and Rigobert Dittmann (Bad Alchemy) hear reminiscences of Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Cecil Taylor and Alexander von Schlippenbach in Schwerdt's piano playing.

Schwerdt uses the following pseudonyms: Edithrakneff Weinermond, Frautastem!, Ingrid Ingulfwieher, Rita Deixis, Solveig Reberp-Klamt and Elan Pauer."

In 1999 I moved to Berlin to study double bass and had a deep and long relationship with jazz, improvised and acoustic music that lead to tours, festivals and occacionally winning a price with different bands and projects.

With time moving on I focused on songwriting and production during almost ten years that I spend with my alternative pop band Super700 either hitting the roads or hiding in studios.

Following that I got deeper into electronics, sounddesign and classical approaches with doing music for theater, cinema and radioplays.

From 2011 to 2015 I lived in Kosovo, where I also worked with different bands and musicians in my brother in laws comfortable STUDIO C.

These days I mainly work in my studio THE COP SHOP writing and producing for theater plays or projects like Brigade Futur lll and the Swiss National Jazz Youth Orchestra. At the the same time I always love to produce, mix and master other peoples music."
