Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Award-winning saxophonist and composer Binker Golding returns to Byrd Out with a new trio comprising giants of the experimental scene Steve Noble and John Edwards for an album of unparalleled instant creativity: Moon Day. The album plays with the post truth zeitgeist, using the first major moon conspiracy of 1835 as a launch pad, throwing a sly wink at Buzz Aldrin as the trio impart on their own musical odyssey. The sheer variety of pace, tone and texture across the record is breathtaking, from Golding's soft, almost weightless opening on "One Giant Step" through to the skittish re-entry of "Reflection" as the musicians ricochet off one another, the album bursts with ideas and energy, yet remains coherent and singular in its purpose.

Recorded during a gap between the various lockdowns of 2020, you can sense the release from the musicians as they combine after enforced isolation with a telepathic sense of where to push each other: Noble interjecting both chaos and order from the drums; Edwards the rocket fuel propelling the unit on; and Golding soaring and cutting through on sax. You will not find a better showcase of these musicians' phenomenal abilities. This is free jazz at its most compelling and most engaging. Moon Day is undoubtedly a future jazz classic."-Bryd Out

Artist Biographies

"Binker Golding is best known for playing saxophone in the jazz duo Binker & Moses. He's also played & recorded with Zara McFarlane, Mr. Jukes, Moses Boyd's Exodus, Sarah Tandy, Ashley Henry, Maisha & others. His current projects also include a free jazz duo partnership with pianist Elliot Galvin, with whom he has recently released the album "Ex Nihilo". The Binker Golding Quartet however is his most recent & detailed musical venture.

In recent years Binker has picked up four awards with Binker & Moses; a MOBO award for best jazz album, two Jazz FM awards & a parliamentary jazz award. He's generally regarded as a musician playing a key role in the innovations at the forefront of the new London jazz scene.

His new group, the Binker Golding Quartet, features compositions exclusively by the band leader with a greater emphasis on detail & harmonic sophistication in order to contrast with his earlier work. Expect jazz & fusion sounds from the 80's & early 90's mixed with contemporary London jazz, with influences ranging from Michael Brecker to Barry White whilst retaining a sound & feel unique to the band.

The new album by the quartet, "Abstractions of reality past & incredible feathers", was recorded at Abbey Road studios, London & is set to be released in September 2019 on Gearbox records. It features Daniel Casimir on double bass, Joe Armon-Jones on piano & Sam Jones on drums, along-side Binker solely on tenor saxophone & composing all the tracks whilst also producing the album."

"After taking up the bass, around 1987, John Edwards co-formed The Pointy Birds who went on to win awards for their music for The Cholmondeleys and Featherstonehaughs dance troupes. The group appeared at festivals in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Moers, Leverkusen, Copenhagen. Around 1990, Edwards played his first gigs with London improvisers such as Roger Turner, Lol Coxhill, Maggie Nicols, Phil Minton.

Between 1990 and 1995 Edwards was a member of three touring groups simultaneously: B-Shops For The Poor, The Honkies and GOD. During this period he also became an increasingly regular player on the London improvised music scene and performed his first solo gigs; he composed and performed music theatre with the bass and cello duo The Great Explorers, street-busked a lot and appeared at many more festivals in Germany, Estonia, France, Italy, Czech, etc.

Since 1995 John Edwards has become a "mainstay" of the London scene, playing with just about everybody, an activity that has seen him clocking up between 150 and 200 gigs a year. He has become regular player with Evan Parker, in many groupings, and with Tony Bevan, Veryan Weston, and Elton Dean, often in collaboration with Mark Sanders on percussion. He has become a more frequent player on the European (and festival) scene, appearing at Taktlos, Ulrichsburg, Nickelsdorf, Budapest, New Zealand and in the USA. He continues to work on solo performances."

"Steve Noble is London's leading drummer, a fearless and constantly inventive improviser whose super-precise, ultra-propulsive and hyper-detailed playing has galvanized encounters with Derek Bailey, Matthew Shipp, Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith, Stephen O'Malley, Joe McPhee, Alex Ward, Rhodri Davies and many, many more.

In the early eighties, Noble played with the Nigerian master drummer Elkan Ogunde, Rip Rig and Panic, Brion Gysin and the Bow Gamelan Ensemble, before going on to work with the pianist Alex Maguire and with Derek Bailey (including Company Weeks 1987, 89 and 90). He was featured in the Bailey's excellent TV series on Improvisation for Channel 4 based on his book 'Improvisation; its nature and practise'. He has toured and performed throughout Europe, Africa and America and currently leads the groups N.E.W (with John Edwards and Alex Ward) and DECOY (with John Edwards and Alexander Hawkins)."
