Sugimoto, Taku / Minami Saeki: Songs [2 CDs] (Ftarri)

Guitarist Taku Sugimoto and vocalist Minami Saeki developed the concept of this album--extremely short, simple songs performed slowly and quietly, with few sounds, using vocals and guitar only, alongside a few subtle guest, revealing a mysterious organization guiding their work--first released as a single CD in 2016, and now expanded in a 2-CD edition.

Artist Biographies:

"Taku Sugimoto is a Japanese guitarist.

He initially gained attention in the late 1990s for his restrained, melodic playing, unusual in the world of free improvisation. Critic Bruce Russell describes this era of Sugimoto's music by writing: "Sugimoto is perhaps the pre-eminent stylist on the guitar ... He brings a golden glow to every session he partakes in, having abandoned amped up noise in favour of a much more introspective and calligraphic style of play."

Around 2002 his music became increasingly abstract, all but eliminating melody and featuring extended periods of silence.

He has collaborated with other Japanese musicians involved in the Onkyo movement, such as Sachiko M, Toshimaru Nakamura and Otomo Yoshihide. He has also collaborated with musicians from European free improvisation scenes, notably trombonist Radu Malfatti and guitarist Keith Rowe."

"Lauri Hyvärinen (b. 1986, Helsinki) uses guitar as his main sound source. His sound and music related activities are of theoretical and practical nature, of which improvisation remains as his primary medium and interest. Hyvärinen has toured in Europe, Japan and USA. He has performed in festivals, concert series and venues such as Wien Modern Festival (Vienna), Musica Nova (Helsinki), Cafe Oto (London), Oorstof/Sound in Motion (Antwerpen), Improtest (Tallinn), Noise and Fury (Moscow), GES21 (St. Petersburg), Pixelache, La-Bas Biennale, Akusmata Sound Festival, Helsinki Festival, World Village Festival (Helsinki), Time of Music (Viitasaari), Validi Karkia (Pori) and Himera (Turku).

In 2017 Hyvärinen was composer in residence at Stockholm's Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) where he researched generative playback models for reproduction of so-called non-idiomatic music.

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"The concept of Songs, the duo project of guitarist Taku Sugimoto and vocalist Minami Saeki, came about in the second half of 2016. By that December they had already made recordings of their music, and the following February they released their debut album, Songs (CD), on Sugimoto's label, slubmusic. Since then, the duo has had an active performance schedule in Japan and overseas, including European tours in 2017 and 2018. Now they have released their second album, the 2-CD set Songs.

Most of the tracks are short songs between one and four minutes long. All 40 songs (22 on CD 1 and 18 on CD 2) were recorded in Japan and Europe in 2017 and 2018. Lyrics are by Saeki, and compositions are by Sugimoto (except for one song composed by Saeki). Some songs were performed with guest musicians Takashi Masabuchi (guitar), Wakana Ikeda (flute), French musician Léo Dupleix (computer, objects, sine-tones), and Finnish musician Lauri Hyvärinen (guitar).

The basic format consists of extremely short, simple songs performed slowly and quietly, with few sounds, using vocals and guitar only. But if you listen carefully, you'll hear within the simplicity a mysteriously well thought out organization. Both extremely unique and abundantly charming, this is a song album that makes you feel as if you could listen forever."-Ftarri
