Wadham, Rachael / Philippe Lenglet / Bruno Duplant: everydayisagoodday (Confront)

Starting from John Cage's Zen quote--"Every day is a good day"--the trio of Rachael Wadham on piano, Philippe Lenglet on acoustic guitar and cithar (a type of harp), and contrabass, recorded these improvisations approaching their instruments not for melodies but as tools for experimentation, from which this trio finds a wealth of inventive sound.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Every day is a good day is a quote from John Cage, which I think is fitting, as the playing of this excellent trio takes it's place within the rich and ever-widening horizon of post-Cageian music. The instruments are not means for creating melodies, but are sites for experimentation, sources of potential sounds that are drawn out and then left to be themselves rather than becoming part of a melodic chain.

Cage's words perhaps suggest a state of pre-lapsarian contentment, but for me the music comes from somewhere quite different. Yes there are moments of relaxation and flashes of beauty, but the general spirit is one of quiet restlessness, a persistent process of enquiry and experimentation which belies any sense of complacency and self-satisfaction. This is serious music - fun and enjoyable too - but seriously good."-Simon Reynell

Rachael Wadham is a performer, composer and instructor based in Metchosin. Rachael was trained classically from a very young age and has always been a keen improviser. As a teacher, Rachael teaches all ages, and has a focus in music education for young children. She likes to gather material from numerous sources to provide a well rounded introduction to piano performance. Rachael has been working as a composer, performer and instructor for over 20 years in BC and Toronto. She has attended numerous composers workshops in Canada and Internationally.

Rachael was a co-founder of the Fernwood Difficult Music Society, a new music concert series that ran from 2002 - 2005, and is currently an active member of triPOD, an improvisation based dance and music collaborative. She is currently working towards her diploma in piano pedagogy...and raising 2 active boys. When not immersing herself in musical projects, Rachael enjoys spending time in her garden."

"Bruno Duplant is a composer, improviser and multi-instrumentist (double bass, percussion, electronics, phonography...) living in the north of France. He has collaborated with lot of instrumentalists around the globe and has also made solo works for such labels as B-Boim, Engraved Glass, Peira, Ilse, Impulsive Habitat, Con-v, Unfathomless, Et le feu comme matière formatable technologiquement, Audiotong, Insubordinations and his own label curated with Pedro Chambel, Rhizome.s...

For him, composing, playing, improvising music is like imagining, creating and sometimes decomposing new spaces/realities, new entities. But it is also a reflection on 'memory', not the historic one, but a memory of all things, spaces & moments.

His new works, mostly based on phonographies & graphic scores, perfectly reflect that."
