Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Trumpeter Susana Santos Silva became one of the most important ambassadors of Portuguese jazz in the world, and in this new opus we find her in notable company - a quartet of amazing musicians picked among the many with whom she's playing with these days, like Joe Morris, Mats Gustafsson, Fred Frith, Christine Wodrascka, Mat Maneri, Craig Taborn, Thomas Morgan and Tom Chant, to name just a few.

The first impression you have when grabbing this CD is that you're going to hear a dream band. Santos Silva with Lotte Anker, Sten Sandell, Torbjorn Zetterberg and Jon Falt? No way! But it's true and that is the kind of truth which transforms something into a gem. More special even when the music reflects a spiritual discovery, in this case "the blessing and beauty of impermanence in my life, in the world and in all the things that are", as Susana puts it herself on the liner notes.

How does that mirror effect happen? Giving you a only apparently contradiction, a "peaceful state of being" manifesting in a "restless and resilient" way. To play life means to play urgently, intensely and honestly, and that's precisely the peace of mind Susana Santos Silva need to create a map of sounds. You don't want to miss this."-Cleran Feed

"It begins with the trumpet, then the soprano sax. They judder, twist and clash. It's spellbinding. Add some perfectly-placed bass notes, and minimal touches of piano and drums... slowly the hall fills with free sound - unnerving and uplifting in equal measure. It's a glorious racket, and despite the density at times there's also a great feeling of space, every interjection, exclamation and punctuation rings out clear and momentary. It's a powerful, and even muscular, start to the afternoon. At one point, Silva utilises some extended techniques, using the mouthpiece alone for a flute-like tone, passing breath directly through the valves, and so on. Meanwhile Sandell dishes out a casual masterclass in sparse precision, and Zetterberg provides high-pitched arco, bowing below the bridge. Anker underpins the passage with muted drones as Fält matches Sandell with percussive delicacy."-Dave Foxall, AJazzNoise.com

"Torbjörn Zetterberg (born 10 May 1976) is a Swedish jazz musician (double bass) and composer, known from collaborations with Jonas Kullhammar.

Zetterberg attended Södra Latin och Fridhems Folkhögskola in Svalöv but was first recognised as bassist when he studied at Kungliga Musikhögskolan in Stockholm still very young. Here he studied bass under guidance of Jan Adefelt. Soon he joined drummer Fredrik Norén's band together with the saxophonist Jonas Kullhammar. Already at this point one could sense that he would become a prominent figure in the Swedish jazz scene. Now his name is firmly rooted in the vibrant progressive selection as the new jazz generation.

He went through a personal crisis and did not record as a bandleader for more than seven years. Zetterberg was uncomfortable with his career and in 2010 he decided to leave the urban life including his bass, and moved to a Buddhist temple. There he resided for a year and still spends half of his time there in 2016. This existential crisis led to the production of the album Och Den Stora Frågan ("And the Big Question" in Swedish) in 2014. Here he collaborated with well known musicians from his earlier career, like the Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva and drummer Jon Fält, known from albums with pianist Bobo Stenson's trio. The album is "charged with joyful urgency, shiny optimism and confident flowing energy, despite the doubts and uncertainties that accompany any creative, artistic process", the reporter of All About Jazz stated in 2014."

"Jon Fält (born 28 August 1979 in Gävle, Sweden) is a Swedish drummer in modern jazz.

Fält was raised in Sandviken and had first music lessons with Stefan Bergkvist at the Kulturskolan. From 1990 he played in the Sandvik Small Band at the school with which he first recorded in 1994. He attended the Jazzgymnasium in Gävle and the Kungliga Musikhögskolan in Stockholm. In the following years he worked with Alberto Pinton, Bobo Stenson (to be heard on his ECM albums Cantando, 2007 and Indicum, 2011), with Lina Nyberg (Tellus, 2006) and Jon Vanderlander, in the ensemble The Stoner led by the saxophonist Nils Berg, further in the bands The Deciders, Splint!, Yun Kan 5 (with Fredrik Ljungkvist) and in Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. In 2007, Fält received the Alice Babs Jazzstipend. He was involved in 20 jazz recording sessions between 1994 and 2012, including with Palle Danielsson, Fredrick Nordstrom and Anders Jormin. In a review on Nordic Music on the Jormin album Ad Lucem states: "Jon Fält is not a drummer in the traditional sense, he creates sounds and fills, creates space by not playing, grooving but still - factually cool, of course."
