Oscar Jan Hoogland: Improviser Composer - piano, electric clavichord, synth, guitar, record players, tape players, megaphones, crackle box, amplified slot machine

"The enfant terrible of the new Dutch impro scene, Oscar Jan Hoogland sprung onto the Amsterdam landscape approximately a decade ago, at the forefront of a new group of improvisers to arrive and simultaneously uphold the tradition of New Dutch Swing even while tearing it apart.

Hoogland is possibly most notable for his ability to use any and every influence as stimuli for improvisation and adventure. Piano may be his main instrument but he is often seen performing on a variety of old synths, a highly customized electric clavichord, guitar, turntables, voice, toys, even an amplified slotmachine... His projects show the diversity of his interests: Jazz with the Chicago based quartet These Things Happen, improvisation with Senegalese griot singer Mola Sylla and percussionist Frank Rosaly, cumbia with Superinca and the Galactic Green, sound installation and performance in Practical Music with Jasper Stadhouders and Christian Lillinger and his Phonograph Orchestra. The Bakfietsband performs on an old dutch transport bicycle for his quartet LOOT featuring Ab Baars Onno Govaert and Uldis Vitols he wrote all the repertoire. Ensembles and projects that link him directly to the history of Dutch improvising, are The Ambush Party "Impossible to predict and impossible to resist" featuring Natalio Sued, Harald Austbø and Marcos Baggiani, the Amsterdam Real Book repertoire project, teaming up with the Benjamin Herman trio for a run on Misha Mengelberg's compositions, and his duo with legendary drummer Han Bennink. He works regularly with Zea, from The Ex frontman Arnold de Boer, with whom he toured Ghana to bridge the worlds improvisation and popmusic.

In all these ensembles, one sees a Misha Mengelberg- like intellect which is just as focused on meta-music and discovering and challenging new ideas as it is on simply providing straight forward musical input.

Oscar has also been crucial in helping this music reach new and different audiences, constantly finding unusual settings which draw together young artists, dancers, and hip underground party folk..He has been running many different series and festivals in Amsterdam including, the legendary Eddie and the Eagles evening in collaboration with the Eddie the Eagle museum at OT301, the Amsterdam Real Book bicycle tours, The Impro Train series at Bimhuis and The 2nd Stop is Jupiter at De Ruimte. In 2016 het brought together the scenes of Amsterdam Berlin and Chicago in the ABC Doek Festival..Over the years he has engaged extensively in the world of theater in collaboration with o.a. De Veenfabriek, De Warme Winkel and De Niewe Tijd..Het Gemeente Museum Den Haag hosted his installation 'On The Line': an homage to Piet Mondriaan's Victory Boogie Woogie that consisted of 12 identical alined record players playing 12 copies of Guus Janssens solo piano record On The Line.

As a teacher Oscar Jan Hoogland is currently on faculty for the composition department at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague and the Mime department for the Academie voor Theater en Dans in Amsterdam.

Hoogland is co-director of the improvisers collective DOEK and connected to the Amsterdam venue De Ruimte and runs his own record label De Platenbakkerij."

"Born in Innsbruck (Austria) in 1979 Gerri picked up the drums when he was 9 years old. After some brass-band and grunge-rock teenage years he studied jazz at the Conservatories of Innsbruck (AT) and later in Amsterdam (NL), where he graduated in 2006. After being part of diverse groups from free-improvisation, alt-rock, experimental electronic club music and avant-pop he is interested in expanding boundaries in music and its genres. Current working bands include Knalpot and Naked Wolf. Recent new projects are the international quintet STUG with Sofia Jernberg, Petter Eldh, Joachim Badenhorst and Raphael Vanoli and the Gerri Jäger Double Duo with Frank Rosaly, Raphael Vanoli and Giray Gürkal, Marieke Verbiesen's Loudmatter, Grafwerk and his Solo Performance.

Gerri has performed with Eirikur Olaffsson (Mum, Sigur Ros), Ingebrigt Haker Flaten (The Thing), Colin Stetson (Bon Iver), Shahzad Ismaily (Tom Waits, Bonny Prince Billy), Marc Ducret (Tim Berne), Fred Frith (Brian Eno), Ron Anderson (The Molecules), Dave Rempis (Peter Brötzmann), Frank Möbus & Rudi Mahall (Der Rote Bereich), Achim Kaufmann, Graduale Nobili (Björk), Jozef Dumoulin (Lidlboj), Franz Hautzinger (Regenorchester), Hilary Jeffery (Zeitkratzer), Mette Rasmussen (Trio Riot), Joachim Badenhorst (Carate Urio), Frans Petter Eldh (Jameszoo), Sofia Jernberg (Fire Orchestra), Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle) and Amsterdam's heavy-weights Wolter Wierbos, Han Bennink, Ab Baars, Michael Moore, Terrie Ex, Jasper Stadhouders and Kaja Draksler a.o. He toured throughout Europe, USA, Canada, Russia and Brazil and released music on Rat Records, Eat Concrete, Blowpipe Records, Red Note, PAO Records, HAK Records, Geweih Ritual, El Negocito, Kaiser Label, Cuneiform and Clean Feed."

"My story is quite simple, I was living in São Paulo (Brazil) a big city with 21.000.000 people and a incredible concrete jungle and it happen to be playing music too, after many years playing Brazilian music, free improvisation started to take place in my music.

Waking up and sleeping with this constant noise that this huge city makes it was inevitable to not have it on my music. As any 3rd world citizen I had to improvise every day and that is what happen to my "forró" (Brasilian music from the north east), became more and more full of noises and freer in the form and content.

So in 2005 after recording "Abaetetuba" and "Contra Mão" I thought that it was time to leave São Paulo and meet some other improvisers around the world. Now I am based in Amsterdam but have been for two years in London where I spent most of my time making music with some amazing musicians as Marcio Mattos, Veryan Weston, John Edwards, Steve Noble, Mark Sanders and also was part of the London Improvisers Orchestra together with Lol Coxhill and Evan Parker between other great musicians from the London free improv scene, that was to me a great school.

This orchestra has inspired me to start the Royal Improvisers Orchestra (RIO) in Holland and it has been playing since 2006, with 20 musicians from all over the world and from completely individual angels of music with musicians from Baroque to Punk Noise but with the same passion for the improvisation.

Here in Holland, beside my fix groups RIO, Caetitu, Abaetetuba and EkE, I have also been playing with some great musicians that I have learned a lot from as Han Bennink, Michael Vatcher, Luc Ex, Marcos Baggiani, Ab Baars, Cor Fuhler and other ZAAL100 (our free improv place in Amsterdam) friends."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"EKE takes off from free improvisation. This method - in which creative process and sound-result coincide - comes as a thrilling on the edge experience for both the audience and the performers. While improvising the players take responsibility for their own voice in the counterpoint relying on their highly individual musical languages that are sharply tuned to one another through playing together intensively. The result is a fresh instant compositions with great contrast in length, dynamics and texture. Aware of contemporary conceptions EKE focuses on reshaping free improvisation using elements of noise, jazz, 20th century composed music and punk. The result is a dynamic forward-moving audio experience.

The three band members met in Amsterdam and played together in September 2007 for the first time. From the first moment it was obvious that this was not a one-night-stand. The flexible trio-setting felt right and musical universes expanded. EKE has been playing and developing amongst others by collaborating with the Boucalee Ensemble, bassist Raoul van der Weide and Gibson's Royal Improviser's Orchestra. Concerts at Bimhuis Amsterdam, Utrecht Jazz Festival, Doek Festival and Loft Cologne (Germany) followed. Their debut CD will consist the best moments of different live concerts and will be presented during their official CD presentation tour through Brazil."-EKE MySpace page
