"Raphael Loher, pianist / composer. Born 1989, Flawil (CH)

Inspired by the blues pianist champion Jack Dupree, he started playing the piano at the age of 14. Improvising and the attentiveness and creative work associated with it became a central part of his life and music at the moment.

Through his multi-layered piano playing, which is supplemented by synthesizers, prepared piano and Wurlitzer, he is active in a wide variety of projects between improvisation, contemporary jazz, pop and new music.

He played with Gerry Hemingway, John Voirol, Nat Su, Christoph Erb, Manuel Troller, David Meier, Nicolas Stocker and had lessons with Sylvie Courvoisier, Pierre Favre, Frank Gratkowski, Chris Wiesendanger, Florian Hoelscher and Vera Kappeler.

In addition, Raphael Loher has been organizing concerts in the 'Kulturbrauerei' in Lucerne for two years and thus promotes improvised music as an organizer."

Using digital tools and formalist techniques to engage with quotidian materials - sonic, physical, and cultural - Ostrowski's work explores the liminal space between the virtual and phenomenological worlds. His work, which has been seen on six continents, ranges from live electronic performance to installations incorporating video, multichannel sound, and computer-controlled objects. He is a freelance developer of interactive technology for artists, and teaches at NYU and Columbia University.

Ostrowski's productions have been seen or performed on six continents, including the Wien Modern Festival, Transmediale and Maerz Musik in Berlin, the Kraków Audio Art Festival, Sonic Acts in Amsterdam, PS 1 and The Kitchen in New York , the Rencontres Internationales video festival in Madrid, and Yokohama's dis_locate Festival. The most important are: "Gezeiten der Zeit" (for string orchestra), "Cueillis par la mémoire des voûtes" (saxophone quartet and string orchestra), "Euridice singt" ( a chamber opera), three string quartets, "Neidhardlieder" (for soprano and four Renaissance recorders), the "Cembalo-Buch", "In Bewegung (Nature Morte au Rideau)" (for piano, string orchestra and soundtrack), "Weisse Bewegung" (for violoncello , piano, and percussion), Quintet for clarinet and string quartet, or "Zerstreut in Arbeit mit Wörtern" (for soprano, piano, and soundtrack).

As an improvising musician and cellist, Alfred Zimmerlin has taken part in various formations in Europe and the US. From 1983 to 2009 he has been active member of KARL ein KARL, improvising and composing in cooperation with Peter K Frey and Michel Seigner, the distinctive feature of this trio being the fact that all compositional decisions are being made and accounted for collectively. Alfred Zimmerlin's work as improvising musician as well as the works of KARL ein KARL are available on numerous recordings."
