SQUIDCO/SQUIDSEAR NEWS

August 5, 2006

Another hot month in this hemisphere, and another great set of recordings to listen to while beating the heat! This month bring a great set of Clean Feed releases, and the last set of Utechs for a while. Two new Ambiances Magnetiques from their excellent jazz series also have us smiling inside. Meanwhile the new Fe-Mail has the hairs on our neck standing on end, which we're balancing out with new Necks album, in a rare show of short songs, and Alfred Harth's latest, bridging the jazz and electro-acoustic worlds. A couple of Mode and Explore titles along with the Sublime Frequency releases from the Sun City Girls world should make for a great end to the summer...

Label: Balance Point Acoustics (bpa011)

John Butcher-saxophone / Aaron Bennet-sax / Jerome Bryerton-drums / Danielle DeGruttola-cello / Henry Kaiser-guitar / Damon Smith-bass

"Seems tribute albums are in the air over at Damon Smith's Balance Point Acoustics. Sextessense is "a tribute to John Stevens and the SME"-the title refers of course to the two albums Stevens recorded with the Derek Bailey, Kent Carter, Evan Parker and Trevor Watts line-up of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble in 1973, Quintessence 1 and 2). Stevens was one of the prime movers and arguably the most important catalyst in improvised music as it emerged in late 1960s London, and his SME remains one of [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Burk, Greg: The Way In

Label: 482 Music (482-1048)

Greg Burk-piano

Burk's fourth release in as many years further documents his trademark synergy of freedom and structure. The all-original program features reinterpretations of previously composed works, organically developed free improvisations and explorations of the non-traditional sound potential of the piano.

"Burk's seemingly paradoxical ability to sound both considered and unfettered is a marvel," wrote AllAboutJazz.com Senior Editor John Kelman of 2005's Nothing, Knowing, featuring Steve Swallow [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Butcher / Charles / Dörner: The Contest of Pleasures

Label: Potlatch (P205)

"Every acoustic musician is at the mercy of the sound of the room they play in. Whilst there may be awkward mismatches for composed music, improvisers can, if they wish, radically shape their music to the acoustics in which they find themselves. In Albi we explored this interplay a little further. Laurent Sassi recorded the trio in the large hall of L'Athanor Cultural Centre, in the extremely resonant antechamber of the Chapelle, in the Chapelle itself and in the dry studio of GMEA. Prolific bassist and composer Cartier tackles the concept of jazz standards and love songs from a French/Actuelle perspective. Compositions and lyrics are from Guillaume Apollinaire, Michel Garneau, Paul-Marie Lapointe, Gaston Miron, Pierre Perrault and Cartier himself, played by a quintet steeped in the idiom, including Jean Derome, Bernard Falaise, and Pierre Tanguay, with Cartier handling vocals. Eugene Chadbourne-guitar, banjo, voice / Victor DeLorenzo-drums, percussion, voice / Brian Jackson-piano, keyboards, flute, voice / Brian Ritchie-one string and no washtub washtub bass, shakuhachi, voice with special guest Molly Chadbourne

"Get Goin' The band name is an acronym, standing for Get out of Iraq Now. The membership includes Brian Ritchie and Victor De Lorenzo of the Violent Femmes, my old Corpses mates, plus Brian Jackson on piano. These are some highlights from a spring tour as well as a version of Joanne from our first concert ever in Oshkosh. Brian plays beautiful shakuhachi on versions of Change Has Come and Summertime and also hauls out a one string bass and a demented washtub bass without a washtub. Dickey, Whit: Sacred Ground

Label: Clean Feed (CF057CD)

Roy Campbell-trumpet / Rob Brown-alto saxophone / Joe Morris-double bass / Whit Dickey-drums

"Being a drummer, Whit Dickey uses generally the piano when he composes. The pieces included in "Sacred Ground" are exceptions - this time, he chose the voice as compositional tool. That circumstance lead him to a particular purpose: to reinforce the melodical complexion of his music. And notice: the music of a drummer. This is not new, of course. Max Roach is the most famous case of a percussionist who wanted to play melodically, but truth is many performers of this instrument aren't satisfied [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

" "Like new fire / Burning us down to the roots, past the roots". These are the first two verses of the poem by Geral Schwartz that inspire this record. And Fire Music this is indeed, as the press call to free jazz and its heirs in the present scene. Rob Brown, Steve Swell and Harris Heisenstadt, the three Diplomats, are really "burned down to the roots", and that means they are true followers of the New Thing. "The other side of this, of course, is exactly the music proposed by Filiano and Adams, not any other, but listened in another way, actively, not as a scenario for reading a magazine, having a conversation or driving in the highway. You have to commit yourself to listen to the proposed sounds, to be there, on the spot, and that's why this isn't a duo record, but a trio one. "For much of this bristling 2006 Stockholm club date, Charles Gayle interprets - or shreds, depending on your vantage - iconic flag-wavers like "Cherokee" and "Giant Steps," as well as standards like "Softly in a Morning Sunrise" and "What's New." Considering the new language and narration techniques used by the Texan writer and the trio's own approach to music, combining formal aspects of several idioms in a new kind of hybrid you can't easily label - call it "world chamber jazz", if you want, but be warned: there's so much more not fitting in the description -, we're not surprised. Because the bassist, composer and arranger is taking the big band format in jazz (in this case a septet) some steps beyond. You know there's not much happening nowadays in this field. Alvarius B: Alvarius B

Label: Abduction (ABD 004CD)

Alvarius B-acoustic guitar

"CD Reissue of the first Alvarius B record. 32 instrumental acoustic guitar excursions into a realm of weird Lo-Fi rustic beauty that sketch retro-portraits of several folk guitar styles, some which may never have existed before. From abrasive to delicate, these lucid antique paintings with acoustic guitar employ Appalachian polyrhythms, dark melodies, flamenco thrash, alien tunings, pseudo eastern drones, cinematic backroad twang, and other hybrid ideas not easily described. This record is a folk [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Chadbourne, Eugene / Kramer / Licht, David: ShockaprilfoolsAbilly: Shockabilly Live 1983

Label: Chadula (1983A)

Eugene Chadbourne / Kramer / David Licht

"I have been wanting to add a Shockabilly release to this list, it is only fair. The entire catalog of this group is embroiled in some kind of heinous legal dispute circa 2006 but there are many live recordings. A friend sent a good one done by a radio station in Ann Arbor but as soon as I started listening to it I realized this was a set in which Kramer's organ stopped working for nearly four songs. Then at a Greensboro Sunday morning jazz set a local artist presented me with a poster that was [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Diamante, Herb: May I Light Your Cigarette?

Label: Abduction (ABD 037CD)
"This debut release from the mysterious Herb Diamante will transport you on a naughty journey through his speakeasy of debauchery and sin. These eleven tracks of alcohol, tobacco, and desire are driven by his rich, golden voice atop a psychedelic showroom of sound. Herb Diamante is perhaps the most unique lounge singer around. He sings songs about eggplants, yellow kazoos, and delicate stilettos. Then, he'll "hail the fish-king" and finish you off with "a wasp in a jam jar." The elusive Englishman [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Label: art-errorist (faustCollectif)

Zappi / w / Diermaier / Jean Hervé / Péron Olivier / Manchion Amaury / Cambuzat

Reissued in a new package of the box manufactured for the Faust Fiesta Festival, these CDs all feature Jean Herve Peron and Zappi Diermier as the core Faust with long time collaborators Olivier Manchion and Amaury Cambuzat. One CD is a concert recording from 1996, remastered and featuring anarchy enough for Bakunin (or Hugo Ball), plenty of rock noise and the twin pillars of Jean's driving spirit and Zappi's inimitable style. The second CD is of rehearsals in July 2005, more songlike; work in progress. [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Lennon, John / Plastic Ono Band: John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band

Label: Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL UCD 760)
John Lennon's first solo release after departing the Beatles, a strong set of songs that help distinguish Lennon as the artist he would be most remembered for. Expensive because of the remastering series (ultradisc) but worth it for the excellent fidelity and good presentation of this important record.

Vander, Christian: Les Cygnes et Corbeaux

Label: Seventh (SRA A 33)
An orchestral keyboard record from Magma's leader, Christian Vander. "Fifteen years in composition (1982 - 1997) and more than four years in the making, this music is something entirely new, bridging the compositional efforts of the 20th Century post Schoenbergian greats to create a 21st Century music which grasps the essence of the vast interior stillness behind all sound and pierces the intensity of silence behind all noise. Disavowing all mechanical tempos, this free-flowing masterpiece reveals [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Berio, Luciano: The Great Works For Voice

Label: Mode Records (048CD)

Christine Schadeberg-soprano / Musicians' Accord

"Luciano Berio is one of the greatest and most innovative composers for the voice of the post-war generation, moving the voice into previously unknown territories, but always with an innately literate sense of "song". In honor of Berio's 70th birthday, Mode is proud to release the first of several volumes devoted to his musical genius.

His association with the legendary mezzo-soprano Cathy Berberian led to the creation of all but one of the works recorded on this CD--a selection of his [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

"Outsider Art Music has unfortunately not had a Harry Smith or an Alan Lomax to discover unpretentious talent, those two 'folksong hunters' who had realized the importance of making recordings to serve collective memory. One of them gave us the essential Anthology of American Folk Music (1952), an absolute reference for the folk movement, while the other made recordings all over the world and became an absolute reference for world music. And that is why the sound of Adolf Wölfi blowing into [ ... continued @ Squidco ]
