Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"With only 24 years of age, Belgian pianist and composer Bram De Looze is no longer a new value demanding our attention: he is one of the most notable musicians of a new generation dedicated in Europe to jazz. After the success of his LABtrio, Septych represents his upgrading to another level of his career, being simultaneously a 7-piece ensemble, with the strange combination of two cellos, three horns, piano and drums, and the title of this record.

De Looze's scores are the main focus of the pieces gathered here, but when you have brilliant soloists like Daniel Levin, Gebhard Ullmann, Robin Verheyen, Lester St-Louis, Bo Van Der Werf and Flin Van Hemmen all together, you can anticipate that there's plenty of improvisation going on. This is the kind of improvisation with no boundaries and no taboos, assembling the most distinctive influences inside the jazz language, but also bringing in some coming from other sources.

With a curriculum of partnerships with Greg Cohen, Maria Joao, David Linx (both singers guesting with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra), Michael Attias, Christopher Hoffmann, Dre Hocevar, Bert Joris and Nicolas Thys, among many others, Bram De Looze couldn't never follow just one direction. So, if you don't know him already, prepare yourself for the surprise."-Clean Feed

Artist Biographies

"Daniel Levin is "one of the outstanding cellists working in the vanguard arena" (All About Jazz), "ridiculously fluent, virtually overflowing with ideas" (New York City Jazz Record) and "very much the man to watch." (Penguin Guide to Jazz). No matter what setting he plays in, cellist Daniel Levin occupies a musical space bordered by many kinds of music, but fully defined by none of them.

"Demonstrating an impressive breadth of texture and contrast, the cellist Daniel Levin comes well prepared for a career in jazz's contemporary avant-garde." (Nate Chinen, The New York Times).

Elements of European classical music, American jazz, microtonal and new music, and European free improvisation all figure prominently in his unique sound. As critic John Sharpe observes in The New York City Jazz Record, "he invokes all manner of musics with prodigious skill: jazz, classical, improv, noise, vocal chorus. His technique is unquestioned and he revels in the physicality of the instrument. Those with an adventurous streak or interest in the outer reaches of the cello universe will find much to savor."

Born in Burlington, Vermont, he began playing the cello at the age of six. In 2001, he graduated with a degree in Jazz Studies from the New England Conservatory of Music, and arrived on New York City jazz scene shortly therafter. Since then, Daniel has developed his own unique voice as a cellist, improviser, and composer. Ed Hazell noted upon release of Levin's first record as a leader, "Cellist Daniel Levin is a major new voice on his instrument and in improvised music." He has performed and/or recorded with Billy Bang, Borah Bergman, Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Gerald Cleaver, Andrew Cyrille, Mark Dresser, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, Tony Malaby, Mat Maneri, Joe Morris, William Parker, Ivo Perelman, Warren Smith, Ken Vandermark, and many others. Daniel is the recipient of a 2010 Jerome Foundation award."

"Flin van Hemmen is widely regarded as a versatile drummer and composer with a keen ear and a commanding presence. Flin has reached beyond the modern jazz audience, inspiring listeners of all backgrounds by exploring the drums as a melodic instrument as much as a dynamic force. Since moving to NY in 2009 he has become an important presence in the 'downtown' jazz and improv scene, playing with such people as Tony malaby and Kris Davis, as well as being a part of the 'Promnight Records' scene. Flin has recently toured with Tony Malaby's Paloma Recio (w/ Drew Gress and Ben Monder) in Europe, Eivind Opsvik's Overseas (w/ Jacob Sacks, Brandon Seabrook, Tony Malaby), Harmen Fraanje's trio in Vietnam, Robin Verheyen's quartet in Switzerland, and Bram deLooze's 'Septych'.

Born in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, Flin played guitar before switching to drums and then moved to Amsterdam at age 18. There he forged many strong musical and personal relationships most notably with fellow young musicians Harmen Fraanje, Robin Verheyen, and Clemens van der Feen with whom he formed Narcissus. This band has released two records for 'de WERF' and continues to be an active presence in Europe. Today Flin remains active on both sides of the Atlantic, honing his skills as an improvisor and taking a serious interest into composing. Currently he is launching his debut CD 'Drums of Days' consisting of Eivind Opsvik and Todd Neufeld, in which he plays piano as well as drums. Here his body of compositions comes to life. Other projects co-lead projects include: LathanFlinAli (w/ Lathan Hardy and Sean Ali), Costa/vanHemmen duo, Narcissus, While We Still Have Bodies, Gestures (w/Eliot Cardinaux), and plays solo concerts. Flin has performed/recorded with: Todd Neufeld, Frantz Loriot, Mat Maneri, Thomas Morgan, Ben Gerstein, Michael Moore, Joe Moffett, Sean Ali, Harmen Fraanje, Kris Davis, Tony Malaby, Pascal Niggenkemper, JP Schlegelmilch, Eivind Opsvik, Lathan Hardy, Kenny Warren, Ralph Alessi, Robin Verheyen, Daniel Levin, Brandon Seabrook, Franz von Chossy, Carlo Costa, Yoni Kretzmer, Jesse Stacken, Patrick Breiner, Eliot Cardinaux, Roberto Pianca, Jacob Sacks and many others.

"Bo Van der Werf (°1969) graduates from the Conservatory of Music in Amsterdam.

Early on, he works out a dual career path: as sideman on the one hand and as leader of his own projects on the other.

So, he is involved right from the start when the Brussels Jazz Orchestra is founded and still has his permanent spot in the band.

In addition, he performs with several other ensembles, including Septych (Bram De Looze's septet), Lidlboj (with pianist-keyboarder Jozef Dumoulin), Dragons (French saxophonist Alexandra Grimal's quintet), Workshop (with French saxophonist Stéphane Payen), the Sylvain Cathala Septet and MikMâäk. He also composes music for documentaries and dance performances and there is the collaboration with contemporary music ensemble Ictus. He plays on the first Aka Moon albums as well.

He develops his personal vision with his band Octurn, which just like the BJO sees the light of day in the Brussels jazz club Sounds. Here he focuses on deepening principles in line with Olivier Messiaen's ideas and contemporary classical music, and linking all of this to jazz idioms and improvisation.

Quite exceptional in that respect are the recordings with the monks of the Gyuto Monastery where this vision rises to a crescendo.

During the upcoming concerts in the Sounds, his quartet Songbook of Changes takes centre-stage with Fabian Fiorini, Jozef Dumoulin and Dré Pallemaerts within its ranks."

"Robin Verheyen first started lessons on the saxophone at the age of 12. He won the prestigious Django d'Or prize at the age of 25. He has called a variety of cities his home (Turnhout, Amsterdam, Paris, New York). One can definitely say that Robin Verheyen has a focused approach to his career.

Born in Turnhout in 1983, Robin Verheyen first studied for three years in Belgium, then two years in the Netherlands, and one year as an honour student ("dean's list") at the Manhattan School of Music with Dave Liebman, Steve Slagle, Frank Vaganée, Jasper Blom, Ferdinand Povel, Dick Oatts, and John Ruocco. He ended his musical study with honours in Amsterdam.

In 2005 Verheyen moved to Paris for a year where he played in bands led by Giovanni Falzone, Remi Vignolo, Nelson Veras, and Bruno Angelini. In Paris he met the Finnish pianist Aki Rissanen with whom he's been working since in their duo and trio with drummer Markku Ounaskari. They recorded a cd together called "Semplice" that was released in 2009 on Alba Records. In 2013 they released the trio album "Aleatoric" on Eclipse Music.

In 2006 Robin Verheyen moved to New York. There he has played and recorded with the Pascal Niggenkemper Trio, as well as the bands of Nicolas Letman-Burtinovic, Dan Loomis, Charnett Moffett, Jesse Stacken, Michael Bates, and more. In 2008 he recorded the cd "Andarta" on Origin Records with Grammy award winner Roy Hargrove and the Roy Assaf/Eddy Khaimovich Quartet.

He also co-leads the band Narcissus with Flin van Hemmen, Clemens van der Feen and Jozef Dumoulin with whom he has released two albums for the label W.E.R.F. since their early beginnings in 2004.

While working as CC de Warande Artist in Residence in his hometown of Turnhout he formed his International quartet with top-level musicians. Playing with Verheyen are the American pianist Bill Carrothers, the Belgian drummer Dré Pallemaerts and the Belgian bassist Nicolas Thys. Their first CD Painting Space was released on the Belgian label W.E.R.F. in 2008. In 2009 there followed Verheyen's second release, the critically acclaimed "Starbound", on the Munich-based Pirouet label.

All About Jazz said: "It's Verheyen's ability to find every creative possibility within a limited framework that puts Starbound over the top, and adds Verheyen to the list of reasons why jazz in the 21st century will be just fine."

Jazztimes said about "Starbound": "Twenty-six-year-old Belgian saxophonist Robin Verheyen displays a masterful command of his horns on his auspicious debut as a leader."

In May 2009 the French Jazzmagazine declared him one of the top 12 European saxophone players among big names like Pietro Tonolo, Christoph Lauer and Trygve Seim.

Verheyen has played as a sideman with Grammy Award winning artists Roy Hargrove, Maria Schneider, Branford Marsalis, NEA Jazz Master Toots Thielemans and many others like Charnett Moffett, Tom Rainey, Ravi Coltrane, Gerald Cleaver, Tyshawn Sorey, and Will Calhoun.

In 2012 he released the album "Trinity" with his NY quartet on the label 52 creations. They presented the album at the Jazz Standard in NYC and toured in Europe playing the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Gent Jazz Festival. The current line-up of this group is Russ Johnson on trumpet, Drew Gress on bass and Jeff Davis on drums. In 2013 Robin received a grant by Chamber Music America to write the new work "Beyond Illuminations" for this band. For this piece he traveled to Senegal to immerse himself in the local music scene and brought together West African rhythm with the modernistic harmonies of French composer Olivier Messiaen. This is rather representative of Verheyen's cross-genre approach to music, something that has become a mainstay in his oeuvre. This work was premiered in September 2014 during a tour of the US. Their new album 'A Look Beyond' (Cap Vert Illuminations) has been released on Challenge Records in 2015.

Since 2012 Robin has been working with pianist Marc Copland as a duo and in a quartet with Gary Peacock and Joey Baron. They performed together at the 2013 Jazz Middelheim Festival in Antwerp. A new recording with Marc Copland, Drew Gress and Billy Hart will be released on Jan 26 2018 on Universal. This will be followed by a European Tour in Feb and March.

He also co-leads the band TaxiWars with Belgian singer Tom Barman. They have released two albums on Universal that received critical acclaim in the rock and jazz world. They are currently preparing their third album.

As a composer he received a commission in 2010 by the concert hall De Bijloke in Ghent to write a 50-minute chamber music work. This work featuring Aki Rissanen, Katrien Baerts and the Kryptos Quartet was premiered as part of the Jazz&Sounds Festival in November 2011 and received wide acclaim. The work featured texts and poems by Indian philosopher Krishnamurti and the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

In August 2014 Verheyen premiered a new commission for the MA Festival in Bruges. This work was based on music by 14th-century composer Guillaume de Machaut combined with Robin's jazz and classical influences. It features Robin Verheyen and Russ Johnson as soloists together with woodwinds from the ensemble I Solisti Del Vento and the string quartet Aton&Armide. His most recent commission was the Bach Riddles for the Bach Akademie in Bruges. This piece was premiered in January 2017. This work is based on The Musical Offering by Bach featuring Benoit Delbecq, Clemens van der Feen and Toma Gouband.

Since 2017 Verheyen has been an Artist in Residence for the KMSKA (Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp). This residency runs for 5 years and the first piece will be premiered in fall of 2018 at the Getty Museum in LA. The piece will feature the Goeyvaerts String Trio and pianist Marc Copland. More info on this project to follow soon.

Verheyen has also been very active as an educator. He has taught master classes at numerous conservatories around the world such as the conservatory of Amsterdam, Lawrence University, The University of Wisconsin, LUCA Jazz School of the Arts and many more, as well as private lessons.

A few years ago, French magazine Jazzman appropriately prophesized, "You don't know who Robin Verheyen is? That's going to change!" "
