Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Limmat is the second CD from Günter Müller, Jason Kahn and Christian Wolfarth, following their first album Drumming released in 2005 on Creative Sources. Recorded during one afternoon in Kahn's Zürich studio, Limmat features three unedited improvisations melding microsounds, percussive mastery and swaths of noise and static into a mesmerizing whole.

Originally from Los Angeles, Jason Kahn has lived in Europe since 1990. He has performed or recorded with musicians such as Günter Müller, Norbert Möslang, Kim Cascone, Arnold Dreyblatt, Steve Roden, Dieb13, Richard Francis, Ryu Hankil, Jon Mueller, z'ev and many others. He ran the Cut label from 1997 to 2008, releasing 25 albums. Limmat is his second release on Mikroton, following an album "Planes", a duo with Asher, released in 2009.

Günter Müller, formerly a percussionist and known for his unique explorations of the possibilities of drums and percussion using electronic devices and self-built instruments, now concentrates on his setup of two iPods and electronics. For thirty years he's been a part of innumerable projects, including long-term musical dialogues with many musicians like Jim O'Rourke, Norbert Möslang, Andy Guhl, eRikm, Oren Ambarchi, Toshimaru Nakamura, Keith Rowe, Ralph Steinbrüchel, Philip Samartzis, Alfred 23 Harth, just to name a few. He also runs the critically acclaimed FOR4EARS, a label for improvised music. This is his second release on Mikroton, following his solo album "cym_bowl", released in 2009.

Christian Wolfarth is a Swiss percussionist, active on the international jazz and improv scenes for thirty years. He studied with Billy Brooks at the Swiss Jazz School, with Pierre Favre at Luzern Conservatory and composition with Siegfried Kutterer. He's played extensively with many musicians like John Butcher, Michel Doneda, Axel Dörner, Barry Guy, Charlotte Hug, Urs Leimgruber, Werner L√ºdi, Evan Parker and is a member of such diverse projects as Mersault (a trio with Tomas Korber, Christian Weber), Tell (a duo with Joke Lanz), Vorwolf (a duo with Michael Vorfeld)."-Mikroton

Artist Biographies

" is a musician, artist and writer. He was born 1960 in New York and grew up in Los Angeles. He re-located to Europe in 1990 and is currently based in Zürich.

As an electronic musician, vocalist and drummer Kahn collaborates regularly with many musicians, both in improvised settings and in the context of graphical scores which he composes for specific groups.

Kahn has exhibited his installations in museums, galleries, art spaces and public sites internationally. These works focus on the idea of space: the conceptual and physical juncture points, its production and dissolution, and our relation to it as a political, social and environmental medium.

Kahn's other activities include sound pieces for radio, film, dance and theater. He has also designed numerous CD, LP and cassette covers. As a writer, his work has appeared in books, magazines and as liner notes to many audio publications.

Performing regularly around the world, Kahn has given concerts throughout Europe, North and South America, Australia, China, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey and South Africa.

In 2011 Kahn started the Editions imprint to publish his own recordings and writings."

"Born München, Germany, 1954; drums and electronics. Though born in Germany, Günter Müller has lived in Switzerland since 1966. From 1981 he has been playing a unique drum set with a mobile pick-up and microphone system of his own invention which allows hand-generated sounds on drums and percussion to be modulated electronically. Since 1998 minidiscs, and since 2002 an ipod, have been included in his electronic set. Nowadays he often plays ipod and electronics only.

Müller was a founding member of the trio Nachtluft, with Andres Bosshard and Jacques Widmer, a group that have created sound-installations and sound-architecture, and of the electronic quartet POIRE_Z with Erik M and Voice Crack. He has worked in a wide variety of contexts: solo; in ad-hoc groupings; and often in duo with, among others, Taku Sugimoto, Jason Kahn, Steinbrüchel, Norbert Möslang, Toshimaru Nakamura, Tomas Korber, Lê Quan Ninh, Keith Rowe, Erikm, Carlos Zingaro, Sachiko M, Michel Doneda and Fabrice Charles. Günter Müller runs the record label For 4 Ears.

Spirits [VINYL]
(Editions)
The 2nd release from Jason Kahn, here on voice and resonator guitar, with Christian Wolfarth on Chinese Cymbal, an antique marching snare and objects, recorded after a series of concerts across Europe in the fall of 2019, Kahn applying a percussionist's perspective to his guitar by playing it as a lap slide, as the two invoke an unusual incantatory spirit from their improvisations.
Dorner, Axel / Jason Kahn
For Berner Munster (Im Berner Munster)
(Confront)
The pairing of German trumpeter Axel Dorner, and NY-born experimental artist Jason Kahn living and performing in Zurich, brings the tradition of avant free jazz and nonidiomatic improvisation into an unusual merging of techniques and approaches, each applying their advanced virtuosity to this intense concert, recorded during Hamburg's Zoom In Festival, 2017.

Spuren [VINYL]
