Recorded live at the Green Door Studio, in Burlington, Vermont, on March 11th, 2007, by Greg Davis.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"This recording was made on the second-to-last date of a rather rigorous eight concert tour I had with Jon Mueller in the spring of 2007. We arrived in Burlington after a very long drive from Baltimore, with not much time to set up our equipment in the Green Door and to get a bite to eat before the show. Snow was everywhere! When we got back to the venue, people were slowly filling the space and by showtime the place was packed.

Truth be told, I can't remember much about playing this show. Listening to this recording brought back many peripheral memories of staying at Greg's house, where we ate breakfast the next morning and then drove back to New York from Burlington through the sunny countryside, still in its winter phase. And hearing this music also brings me back to a certain phase in my life, playing this form of music, which at the time marked a change in how people improvised, how electronic sounds were used with acoustic sounds, how we began to change our thoughts about form and structure and even what it meant to improvise.

After one of our concerts at Wesleyan University, Anthony Braxton, who was in the audience and was a professor there at the time, came up to Jon and I and simply said, "Electrifying!" Hearing this recording again today, I feel his words still ring true."-Jason Kahn 2021

Artist Biographies

" is a musician, artist and writer. He was born 1960 in New York and grew up in Los Angeles. He re-located to Europe in 1990 and is currently based in Zürich.

As an electronic musician, vocalist and drummer Kahn collaborates regularly with many musicians, both in improvised settings and in the context of graphical scores which he composes for specific groups.

Kahn has exhibited his installations in museums, galleries, art spaces and public sites internationally. These works focus on the idea of space: the conceptual and physical juncture points, its production and dissolution, and our relation to it as a political, social and environmental medium.

Kahn's other activities include sound pieces for radio, film, dance and theater. He has also designed numerous CD, LP and cassette covers. As a writer, his work has appeared in books, magazines and as liner notes to many audio publications.

Performing regularly around the world, Kahn has given concerts throughout Europe, North and South America, Australia, China, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey and South Africa.

In 2011 Kahn started the Editions imprint to publish his own recordings and writings."

"The classically-trained Greg Davis, who has largely helped to define subgenres such as folktronica, laptop folk, and pastoral electronica, creates intricate and subtle compositions that merge organic, computer-generated sounds with warm, natural tones, live instrumentation, and field recordings, while referencing artists like Boards of Canada, Brian Wilson and the Incredible String Band. At Depaul University in Chicago, Davis studied classical and jazz guitar, as well as composition and Jazz Studies. In 1996, after years of working with hip-hop groups, jazz combos, free improvisation, and experimental composition, Greg Davis turned to computer-based music. In 1997, Davis started his own label, Autumn Recordings, and in 1999 moved to Boston to pursue his Master's degree in composition, which he received in 2001. By that time, Davis had become a fixture on the Boston experimental music scene, performing solo and as Parallel, with Don Mennerich. That year also saw the release of a various artists CD called Autumnature on Davis' imprint, and the Clouds as Edges 7" on Grounded Records. In February of 2002, Carpark Records released Arbor, Davis' full-length debut, which would set the tone for his often whimsical and bucolic electronic pieces. In August of that year, Davis moved back to Chicago and began work on his follow-up record while touring extensively and globally. He has played with such influential acts as Animal Collective, Hrvatski, the legendary :zoviet*france:, David Grubbs, Blectum From Blechdom, Jan Jelinek, and Ogurusu Norihide. May of 2002 brought a split 7" on Autumn with Don Mennerich and in 2003, Davis put out a record on Melektronikk (the Precursors 7") and a live CD (Mort Aux Vaches) on experimental mainstay Staalplaat. Curling Pond Woods -- Greg Davis' sophomore release -- carries laptop folk to its logical extreme, but also quietly demolishes any genre constraints in the process. With a Beach Boys cover setting the vibe for the album, Curling Pond Woods is Davis' first true opus, fundamentally a brilliant pop record that requires no other modifiers."-Charles Spano

"Jon Mueller (born 1970 in Waukesha, Wisconsin) is an American percussionist and composer, active in experimental and rock disciplines.

Jon Mueller was introduced to music through his parents, and began taking guitar and piano lessons at an early age. After quitting both, he became interested in the drums after his friend inherited a drumset. The instrument appealed to him due to its focus away from melody. In an interview with Natasha Pickowicz, Mueller stated, "Hitting the drums and cymbals sounded good, no matter the combination." He then began taking snare drum lessons before moving to a full kit.

In 1990, he studied with jazz musician Hal Russell while attending Columbia College in Chicago.

Mueller graduated in 1995 from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee with a bachelor's degree in English. In 2008, he earned his Master of Business Administration degree.

In the 1990s, he met guitarist Chris Rosenau, with whom he developed a long-time association. Together, they founded the groups Pele and Collections of Colonies of Bees. The latter group later co-founded Volcano Choir with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon. Their debut album Unmap reached number 92 on the Billboard 200 chart.

He has also worked with a variety of musicians such as James Plotkin, Rhys Chatham, Asmus Tietchens, Z'EV, Jason Kahn, Marcus Schmickler, Bhob Rainey, Jack Wright, and others.

In 2003, he began experimenting with vibrating drums on top of speakers. This direction is documented on his What's Lost is Something Important CD, Metals CD, Physical Changes LP/CD/DVD, and Alphabet of Movements LP.

He has performed solo and in various groupings throughout North America, Europe, United Kingdom, and Japan, in venues including New Museum (New York), Arnolfini (Bristol, UK), MusŽe des Beaux-Arts de MontrŽal, (MontrŽal, QC), Issue Project Room (New York), Guggenheim (New York), and Cafe OTO (London, UK). His solo and collaborative recordings have been released by labels such as Table of the Elements, Polyvinyl Records, Type Recordings, Jagjaguwar, Hometapes, Important Records, Taiga Records, and many others.

In 1999, he formed the record label, magazine, and music distribution company Crouton. Crouton published over 40 releases, mostly in limited editions, featuring the work of The Hafler Trio, Asmus Tietchens, Daniel Menche, Robert Hampson, Robert Haigh, Jarboe, Lionel Marchetti, Jason Kahn, Aranos, Alessandro Bosetti, Osso Exotico, Z'EV, Collections of Colonies of Bees, Pele, and many others, as well as his own releases. Crouton also organized events in the Milwaukee and Chicago areas. These were documented by the press and even filmed as part of a PBS documentary (on Ken Vandermark). The business closed in 2009.

In 2009, he was referred to by Pitchfork as "an audacious ringleader for new music."

In 2011, he started his Death Blues project, described by Mueller as, "a multidisciplinary project that addresses the inevitability of death as impetus to become more present in each moment." Performances for the project took place throughout the U.S., including Hopscotch Fest and Alverno Presents."
