"Agnes Hvizdalek is an improvising musician originating from Vienna's experimental music scene and is based in Oslo and Vienna. From an early age, she has dedicated her life to new music and her fascination with the human voice. She celebrates this in her abstract vocal music, for which she has received international acclaim. Always exploring new horizons, Hvizdalek has engaged in numerous cross-disciplinary collaborations merging voice and visual and performance art, dance, theatre, film, writing."

"Raphael Malfliet is an experimental electric bassplayer and composer based in Antwerp Belgium.

Raphael Malfliet was born in Dendermonde, Belgium in 1990 and grew up in Hamme. He started playing electric bass at the age of twelve. Wanting to pursue a life and career in music, Raphael attended the conservatory of Antwerp where he followed masterclasses with Larry Grenadier, John Hébert, Anders Jormin, Ben Allison and many more.

Raphael became active as a sideman in all kinds of projects of fellow students and won prizes with some of them: Leaven (Jazzcontest of Mechelen) & Space to Breathe with visual artist Joke Derycke and dancer Olivia Van De Peer (Champ's D'Action LabO #4

After graduating in 2014 Raphael left for New York for a period of three months to get inspired by the city and it's musicians. His experiences there made him become interested in contemporary classical music and composition, focussing intensely on how to connect those interests with free improvised music, he started to explore new sound possibilities on the electric bass using a bow and prepared techniques.

During this process he was lucky to have played with and learned from great musicians such as Mary Halvorson, Fay Victor, Carlo Costa, Todd Neufeld, Flin Van Hemmen, Sarah Bernstein, Pascal Niggenkemper and Michael Attïas.

Raphael is currently leading a New York trio which also features Todd Neufeld on guitar and Carlo Costa on drums and percussion. They recorded Raphael's first album as a leader in November 2015 and was released in September 2016 on Ruweh Records. Raphael is currently focussing on how to incorporate spatialism and the acoustic projection of sound and the perception of fore and background into his music."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"g a b b r o is a conglomerate of sounds and improvisation that centers itself around the baritone saxophone of Antwerp based musician Hanne De Backer.

Together with Marc De Maeseneer they released the first album in 2017, consisting of seven sonoric landscapes, recorded in the resonating space from Het Bos in Antwerp.

For the second album, Granular, g a b b r o expanded to a quartet consisting of vocalist Agnes Hvizdalek, electric bassplayer Raphaël Malfliet and saxophonist Marc De Maeseneer. The quartet played its first concert at the Summer Bummer Festival 2018 and recorded in the Rabbit Field Studio in Hoboken."-Gabbro

"While Gabbro, Hanne De Backer's baritone sax project, used a no frills duo concept for its debut album, things take a different turn on Granular. With Marc De Maeseneer again by her side, this album also involves fellow Belgian experimentalist Raphael Malfliet on electric bass, as well as singular vocalist Agnes Hvizdalek. Taken from studio recordings, as well as the quartet's performance at 2018's Summer Bummer Festival, Granular turns fragmentation and attention for detail, sound and space into an invitation to listen without prejudice and expectations. The result is a strikingly original impression of a universe full of unconventional techniques, which retains a balance between the highly personal and a remarkable openness, turning the granules of the title into a broader, organic whole."-Guy Peters
