"Pianist-composer Kris Davis has blossomed as one of the singular talents on the New York jazz scene, a deeply thoughtful, resolutely individual artist who offers "uncommon creative adventure," according to JazzTimes. The Vancouver-born, Brooklyn-residing Davis was dubbed one of the music's top up-and-comers in a 2012 New York Times article titled "New Pilots at the Keyboard," with the newspaper saying: "Over the past couple years in New York, one method for deciding where to hear jazz on a given night has been to track down the pianist Kris Davis." Reviewing one of the series of striking albums Davis has released over the past half-decade, the Chicago Sun-Times lauded the "sense of kaleidoscopic possibilities" in her playing and compositions.

Long favored by her peers and jazz fans in the know, Davis has earned high praise from no less than star pianist and MacArthur "Genius" Grant honoree Jason Moran, who included her in his Best of 2012 piece in Art Forum, writing: "A freethinking, gifted pianist on the scene, Davis lives in each note that she plays. Her range is impeccable; she tackles prepared piano, minimalism and jazz standards, all under one umbrella. I consider her an honorary descendant of Cecil Taylor and a welcome addition to the fold."

The newest album from Davis as a leader is Capricorn Climber (Clean Feed, 2013), with the pianist joined by kindred spirits Ingrid Laubrock (tenor saxophone), Mat Maneri (viola), Trevor Dunn (double-bass) and Tom Rainey (drums). Davis made her debut on record as a leader with Lifespan (Fresh Sound New Talent, 2003), followed by three progressively inventive and acclaimed albums for the Fresh Sound label: the quartet discs The Slightest Shift (2006) and Rye Eclipse (2008), then the trio set Good Citizen (2010). Davis's 2011 solo piano album on Clean Feed, Aeriol Piano, appeared on Best of the Year lists in The New York Times, JazzTimes and Art Forum. Davis wrote the extraordinary arrangements for saxophonist-composer Tony Malaby's nonet project Novela, with the album Novela released by Clean Feed in 2011 and appearing on Best of the Year lists in DownBeat and JazzTimes. The pianist is also part of the collaborative Paradoxical Frog with Laubrock and drummer Tyshawn Sorey; their eponymous 2011 album on Clean Feed was included on Best of the Year lists by National Public Radio, The New York Times and All About Jazz.

In addition to her work as a leader, Davis has performed with such top figures as Paul Motian, Bill Frisell, Tim Berne, John Hollenbeck, Michael Formanek and Mary Halvorson. Davis started playing piano at age 6, studying classical music through the Royal Conservatory in Canada and formulating her desire for a life in music by playing in the school jazz band at age 12. She earned a bachelor's degree in Jazz Piano from the University of Toronto and attended the Banff Centre for the Arts jazz program in 1997 and 2000. The pianist received a Canada Council grant to relocate to New York and study composition with Jim McNeely, then another to study extended piano techniques with Benoit Delbecq in Paris. She holds a master's in Classical Composition from the City College of New York, and she teaches at the School for Improvised Music.

The Jazz Gallery has given Davis a commissioning residency to write for her trio with Rainey and John Hébert to take place in May 2013, and the Shifting Foundation awarded her a grant to compose and record a large-ensemble project. About her art, JazzTimes has declared: "Davis draws you in so effortlessly that the brilliance of what she's doing doesn't hit you until the piece has slipped past." "

"Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (b. 1971, Oppdal) - studied Jazz at the Music Consevatory in Trondheim, Norway (1992-1995) under the tutelage of bassplayer Odd Magne Gridseth.

When one listens to the great bassists in modern jazz history, a striking thing (though it may not be immediately arrived at) is that greatness is reached through open-mindedness and diversity. William Parker, Malachi Favors Maghostut, Peter Kowald, Wilbur Ware, Bertram Turetsky, Buell Neidlinger - all of these bass players have embraced a lifestyle of playing all sorts of music and the breadth of each musicians' technique is a testament to those experiences. Norwegian bassist and composer Ingebrigt Håker Flaten is also a musician whose experience is both geographical and aesthetic. While the fertile Scandinavian new jazz scene offered a vast amount of opportunities to work in different bands with musicians whose concepts are as individual as the grains in a reed, Flaten has found home and on-the-bandstand education in places as far flung as Chicago and his current residence Austin, Texas.

A muscular player whose tone and attack run the gamut from Paul Chambers to Buschi Niebergall, his sense of both openness and control serves ensembles as diverse as The Thing, Free Fall, Atomic, Scorch Trio and the Kornstad/Håker Flaten Duo. In addition to his own Chicago Sextet and Austin-centric Young Mothers, Flaten has also recorded and performed with Frode Gjerstad, Dave Rempis, Bobby Bradford, the AALY Trio, Ken Vandermark, Stephen Gauci, Tony Malaby, Daniel Levin, Dennis Gonzalez and numerous others. Flaten studied at the Conservatory in Trondheim (1992-1995), turning professional shortly afterward, yet his hunger to play in new situations with new musicians - schooled or amateur, frequently recorded or just starting out - puts him in a rare class, that of a truly broad-minded artist. That mettle has served him well, living and developing the music under his own steam and drawing from influences as diverse as Derek Bailey, George Russell, Chris McGregor, filmmakers Ingmar Bergman, contemporary pop melody and gritty punk music as well as everyday sights and sounds.

There is a calmness and self-assuredness that imbues all great artists, in that the diversity of their work comes with very little ego. Flaten's artistry is often in collective, leaderless ensembles and in fact, following a decade of professional musicianship it wasn't until 2004 that his leader-debut was released - Quintet (Jazzland, followed in 2008 by The Year of the Boar, and a Sextet recording is upcoming). This latter fact is partly due to the necessity of a copacetic situation - in an interview in 2010 with the Austinist he noted that "I use people where I'm located. It's inspiring to have your own band to write for, but you have to make sure that people feel free and not limited by the music; the compositions should lead the way to a player's open mind, and that is a challenge." Certainly not every bandleader/composer thinks this way.

In 2011, he formed another ensemble, The Young Mothers, which includes drummers Stefan Gonzalez (Dallas) and Frank Rosaly (Chicago), trumpeter/poet/rapper Jawaad Taylor (New York), saxophonist Jason Jackson (Houston), and Jonathan Horne (Austin) on guitar. It's a group of varying levels and influences and as it grows organically, will be another excellent lens through which to view Flaten's aesthetic, philosophy, and musicianship. The next few years see him in a position where established ensembles can steep and spread their influence, while experimenting with and nurturing a wide range of new relationships."

"Born in Shanghai, poet Lynn Xu earned a BA from the University of California at Berkeley and an MFA at Brown University. She received a Catherine and William L. Magistretti Fellowship and a Jacob K. Javits Fellowship for her doctoral studies at the University of California at Berkeley.

Influenced by surrealism, philosophy, and critical theory, Xu composes poems engaged with structure on an intimate level. Poet Ben Lerner, in his 2010 introduction to Xu's work in the Boston Review describes Xu as an "expert at multiplying sites of resonance and ambiguity," praising "Xu's ability to make the poetic line a little theater where the belatedness of language is felt-and sometimes lulled into suspension."

Xu is the author of the poetry collection Debts & Lessons (2013), which was a finalist for the L.A. Times Book Prize, and a chapbook June (2006). In 2008 her work was featured in Best American Poetry and, in 2013, she was selected as a New American Poet at the Poetry Society of America.

An editor for Canarium Books, Xu lives in Marfa, Texas with her husband, the poet, Joshua Edwards."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"Desert Encrypts Volume 1 is a two on part suite based on observations from the desert in and around Marfa, TX. It also explores Mazurek's ongoing fascination with social, psychological, and physiological structures, both terrestrial and extra on terrestrial. The composition includes written music and graphic scores for improvisation.

For Desert Encrypts Vol. 1 Mazurek has put together an awe on inspiring new ensemble featuring Kris Davis on piano, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass and Chad Taylor on drums. Recorded live at the Crowley Theater in Marfa, TX during Mazurek's inaugural Desert Encrypts Festival in August 2018, Desert Encrypts Vol. 1 captures the quartet burning through Mazurek's newest compositions like they've been playing together for years (to be fair some of them have been playing together for years). Mazurek has always been associated with the Chicago scene he spent so many years in (as well as his time in Brazil thereafter), but Desert Encrypts Vol 1 is his first album that feels truly Texan to these ears, and we're excited to present a new exciting development in a long string of exciting developments that have marked Mazurek's long and illustrious career." on Astral Spirits

,

"It was twenty on five years ago, in 1994, that Rob Mazurek first emerged with Man Facing East (Hep Jazz), a quartet recording solidly positioned in the post/hard bop style. Even in the interpretations of standards, there were clues that the cornetist/composer was a restless soul. In the intervening years, Mazurek has rapidly charted his own dissident destiny as a multi on media artist of uncompromising vision while fronting more than a dozen groups of all shapes and sizes. In his perpetual creativity, Mazurek now gives listeners the Marfa Trilogy of which this album, Desert Encrypts Vol. 1 represents the (mostly) acoustic component of three albums.

The quartet here is stellar; the extraordinary percussionist Chad Taylor, the other half of Mazurek's Chicago Underground Duo and its off on shoots, meets up with two of the leading artists in improvised music: pianist Kris Davis and bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten. The prolific Davis has produced a striking catalog of music. Her Paradoxical Frog trio with saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and drummer Tyshawn Sorey has released two eclectic and intriguing albums. The critical acclaimed Davis has worked in the upper tier of the avant on garde with Nate Wooley, Tony Malaby, Angelica Sanchez, Bill Frisell, Tim Berne, Craig Taborn, and Mary Halvorson among her collaborators. Haker Flaten is the long on time co on leader of The Thing with reed player Mats Gustafsson and drummer Paal Nilssen on Love; the trio, as of 2019, is on hiatus. He has recorded with Atomic, James Blood Ulmer, Dave Rempis, Frode Gjerstad, Joe McPhee, and the Magnus Broo Trio.

Desert Encrypts Vol. 1 is a two on part suite inspired by Mazurek's natural surroundings in Marfa, Texas, near the Mexican border. Known for its mysterious, shape on shifting "Marfa ghost lights," it seems a perfect location for an artist who has drawn much of his inspiration from the unknown. The ten on minute opening piece, "Encrypt II Spiral," has a nimbleness to it that inhabits quarters different from much of Mazurek's recent non on electronica. It has the sultry flavor and sense of satisfaction that might be anticipated in his São Paulo Underground work. The entire quartet has beautifully expressive solos and Mazurek and Davis share the driving time. The pianist maintains control through much of the subsequent "Encrypt II," a more loosely constructed piece where Mazurek's piccolo trumpet sets up a mid on point interlude.

"Encrypt IV Bird Encrypt Morning Song" could be the soundtrack for the ghost lights. Moving through several related motifs, it is both edgy and pastoral; the interaction between Mazurek and Davis is as wonderous as the wide on eyed atmosphere it creates. The architecture is less familiar on "Encrypt IV Blue Haze," a mesmerizing electro on acoustic mix with a spoken on word reading from Lynn Xu, and Mazurek taking the piece out with an unexpected western theme. Another double on digit length track, "Encrypt 37" is bifurcated along lines of intense and hard on swinging concepts, and two extended reflections from Davis. The album concludes with the open improvisations of "Encrypt I," featuring a terrific solo from Taylor.

Mazurek makes music in many guises. It is properly difficult to compare his collections side on by on side, but in a derivative of creative music we will call "jazz" Desert Encrypts Vol. 1 is one of his finest projects. Creating open space and drawing the ears into it, only to find nothing recognizable, is what Mazurek does better than anyone. His visual artistry plays a larger role in his music with each new venture. Davis is simply phenomenal as foil or leader, as the music may dictate. She can turn a nuance into a substantial encounter midstream. Taylor and Haker Flaten masterfully add textures in the midst of frequently shifting rhythmic notions, contributing greatly to developing very complex ideas." on Karl Ackermann, All About Jazz
