den Boer Salmom, Miriam / Ernesto Rodrigues / Fredrik Rasten / Guilherme Rodrigues: A Late Evening I (Creative Sources)

A subtle album of acoustic interaction recorded at Berlin's Noiseberg from the quartet of Miriam den Boer Salmon on violin, Ernesto Rodrigues on viola & zither, Fredrik Rasten on acoustic guitar, and Guilherme Rodrigues on cello & percussion, sounding almost electronic in their frictional technique and harmonic overtones, ebbing and flowing from active interaction to tranquil discourse.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"[...] let me also mention A late evening in the future more specifically: It was recorded by a quartet in Berlin (with Rodrigues himself also on zither) in October 2018, and likewise (per Sitsa) projects an affective calming, there focusing more on central figures (rather than counterpoint or generalized spanning): The feel of A late evening in the future thus recalls the similarly string on based Dethick (as discussed here last month) rather closely for me, whereas its sparse focus can recall Golden towers and electric frictions (among many Rodrigues albums) per above.

Finally, as also mentioned in a summary last month, larger productions from CreativeFest #12 are appearing, most recently a new String Theory album (of eighteen musicians), Krypton(as another rather singular, surging wave), as well as a new Suspens‹o nonet, Rayon Blanc Ñ again reaffirming a focus on quiet (& the tension within or between notes, in an ongoing interrogation of musical continuity per above) & even fragility (perhaps akin to that of the latest IKB, there via biological figuration). So although Rodrigues has been producing albums with more presence lately Ñ & a variety of weaponry largely (or at least sometimes) depends upon audibility Ñ he's also reasserting an emphasis on ambivalent articulation, quietness & restraint Ñ i.e. affirming the fragility of so many relations in our world. (And I expect to be discussing some other smaller, perhaps more intimate, releases soon.)"-"Todd McComb's Jazz Thoughts

"He has been playing the violin for 30 years and in that time has played all genres of music ranging from contemporary music to free jazz and improvised music, live and in the studio.

His main interest shifted towards contemporary improvised and composed music.

The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements.

Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning.

Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups.

Music for Dance, Cinema, Video and Performance.

Has created the record label Creative Sources Recordings in 1999, which mainly concentrates on releasing experimental and electro-acoustic music."

Fredrik Rasten, guitarist / improviser / composer "I am a Norwegian guitarist (b. 1988) working in the field of experimental music, both improvised and composed. My main focuses are exploring and utilizing the acoustic possibilities of the steel string guitar, motivated by a fascination for the almost tactile experiences of acoustic phenomena. The last months I have been working extensively with intonation, with an extended concept of consonance as a point of departure, both in solo work and in duos with trumpeter Torstein Lavik Larsen and bass player Jonathan Heilbron. I have also had the lucky opportunity to take lessons in this field with composer and violist Catherine Lamb.

Other music that I am inspired by includes wandelweiser music, traditional british folk and early music."

"Fredrik Rasten works with acoustic guitar and in exploring the possibilities for putting this instrument in new musical contexts. With extensive use of preparations and different non-tempered tunings, he creates warm sounds in gradual development. He also includes subtle use of the voice to make interfering thick timbres and tonalities in combination with the guitar. A goal for the music is to open a room for details that invites the listener inside the musical material in an active and exploring way.

He is also playing composed music, especially related to quiet / Wandelweiser music and Just Intonation music, and has performed pieces by Johan Lindvall, Antoine Beuger and Catherine Lamb."
