Artist Biographies:

"Born in 1976, Mike Gennaro has collaborated with several highly regarded musicians including European free jazz saxophonists John Butcher and Mats Gustafsson, American avant-country guitarist Eugene Chadbourne and Toronto indie soul act Mantler and award winning blues artists Raoul and the Big Time among others. He has performed at the International Pop Overthrow, Beaches Jazz Festival and has made two appearances at the Toronto International Jazz Festival. He has also performed throughout Europe and has been playing Toronto clubs since the mid 90′s. Mike has also studied with former Rheostatics drummer and veteran drum teacher Dave Clark and ace session drummer Rick Gratton.

He has also released several recordings on labels such as Spool, Bug Incision and Arachnadiscs, the most recent of which are featured on his bandcamp page: https://mikegennaro.bandcamp.com.Mike has performed throughout North America and Europe and has received support form the Canada Arts Council and the Ontario Arts Council both for study and touring projects.

Mike's drumming and production work can be heard on singer/songwriter Ray Pearen's stellar 2009 debut Everything Is Spinning. Lush three part harmonies, jangly guitars and ghostly keyboards provide the perfect backdrop for Pearen's fresh take on the classic pop sound. Gennaro is also featured on Mantler's celebrated 2010 CD Monody, providing funky soul jazz drumming on the tracks Fortune Smiled Again, Childman and In Stride. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monody_(album)

His current band, The Soundtastics play 60′s, 70′s and 80′s pop hits, with an affinity for obscure AM rock and soul. Mike is also in the midst of recording a solo album, which will feature songs he wrote for the Shrimp Magnet Theatre Company's original production The Really Real Adventures of Scott Free and Will Do.www.soundcloud.com/soundtastics

The experience of working with the Toronto District School Board and the Government of Ontario has given Mike a strong sense of diplomacy, as his ability to adapt to multicultural and multilingual work environments has enabled him to thrive in such diverse settings. Being a father of two young children has also proven that patience is indeed a virtue, while reminding him of the magic of childhood."

"Alex Ward was born in 1974. He is a composer, improviser, and performing musician. His primary instruments are clarinet and guitar, and he has also performed in public and on recordings on alto sax, piano/keyboards, bass guitar, and as a vocalist. He was based in Oxford from 1992-2000, and since then has lived in London.

His involvement in freely improvised music dates back to 1986, when he met the guitarist Derek Bailey. As an improviser, he was initially principally a clarinettist (sometimes also playing alto sax), but since 2000 he has also been active as an improvising guitarist. On both instruments, hIs longest-standing collaborations in this field have been with the drummer Steve Noble.

From 1993 to 2001, most of his activity as a composer took place in collaboration with Benjamin Hervé, mainly in the context of the rock band Camp Blackfoot. From 2002-2005, his writing was mostly done solo, and was primarily focused on songs. Since 2006, he has been heavily involved in both solo and collaborative composition, predominantly (though not exclusively) of instrumental music. Much of his writing and performing during this time has been done with Dead Days Beyond Help, a duo with drummer Jem Doulton. He also currently leads a number of bands including Predicate, Forebrace, The Alex Ward Quintet/Sextet, and Alex Ward & The Dead Ends.

He has been a member of many other groups including ensembles led by Eugene Chadbourne, Simon H. Fell and Duck Baker, and has also done various work as a session musician and in collaboration with other media. Since 2005, he has co-run the label Copepod Records with composer/performer Luke Barlow. He does the recording, mixing and/or mastering of most of his own music, and for many of the groups he plays in."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"In November 2017, the duo of Canadian drummer Mike Gennaro and UK clarinettist/guitarist Alex Ward navigated its way across Germany by a series of train journeys of varied classifications and degrees-of-scenic-ness. Over the course of a week they played five duo shows, recordings from three of which appear on this album.

Prior to this tour, Gennaro and Ward had played together only once, in an afternoon session in London captured on the digital-only release "Bring A Book". When the opportunity to play together again finally arose, the musicians leapt into it with abandon, as can be heard on the opening track "Schones Wochenende" which was the first piece of the first show of the tour. The recklessness that was perhaps ill-advised when running from platform to platform in search of the right train paid dividends in a musical context, as the players pushed their ideas and responses ever further.

At the end of the week, the duo had several hours of recordings to show for their exertions, from which the pieces on this album have been lovingly cherry-picked: and with only one small undisplaced greater tuberosity fracture sustained in the process."-Confront
