A Pond in My Living Room

Lauzier, Phillippe: A Pond in My Living Room (Sofa)

Using layers of bass clarinet in microtonal harmonies and micropolyphonies, Montreal bass clarinetist Philipe Lauzier (Sainct Laurens, Quartetski, Toiture and Not the Music) creates a mesmerizing set of textural and tonal environments, rich and slowly unfolding pieces that hold interest in the intersections of saturated timbre, tone and unforeseen harmony.

Artist Biographies:

"Composer, improviser, instrumentalist (clarinet & saxophone) and sound artist, Philippe Lauzier participates in several projects that tour regularly in Canada and Europe, but also in USA, Latine America and Australia. In his solo and collective work, his ideas incorporate influences of contemporary musical languages as well as sounds from non-Western sources. Creative extended techniques, complex drones from which polyphonies emerge, and a certain compositional rigour are typical of his style. His interest for collaborative intermedia practices also leads him to create sound installation pieces, live performances for contemporary dance, theater music and many sound designs for visual art projects. Philippe lives in Montreal, Quebec."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"A Pond In My Living Room is the second solo album of Montréal-based sound artist and wind player Philippe Lauzier, and his debut album for SOFA. On this record Lauzier is using multiple tracks of bass clarinet to create a luxuriant field of overtones and meticulous micropolyphonies. The result is a beautiful record with overlapping and long mesmeric sequences of sound.

Philippe Lauzier (b. 1977) is an active musician from Montreal, Canada. Working with several projects, Lauzier has been touring in Europe, North America and Australia with groups like Sainct Laurens, Quartetski, Toiture and Not the Music, as well as playing concerts with the musicians Martin Tétreault, Franz Hautzinger, Xavier Charles, Sam Shalabi, Tatsuya Nakatani among others. His interest for multidisciplinary arts has also led him to create sound installations for the FIMAV-festival in Victoriaville; a site-specific piece for ship horns, bells, synthesizer and four amplified instrumentalists at Pointe-à-Callière in the old port of Montreal; music for contemporary dance and theater; and a few visual-sound art collaborations such as Motel Hélène with visual artist Frédérique Laliberté."-Sofa

"Exploring the sophisticated capacities of overdubbing, Montreal-based bass clarinettist Philippe Lauzier has created a multilayered program, which emphasizes not only the reedy tones but also the consolidated air currents emanating from his instrument. Like an action painter who works in oils, Lauzier thickens his timbres in such a way as to bring out new perceptions of depth and form. This sfumato-like strategy is most conspicuous on the concluding Napping in a Neglected Garden, as a series of reed lines are introduced in sequence, then gradually blended in translucent fashion, with some of them slightly off pitch and others soothingly communicative. As the textures spread out, the connective result is both cushioned and airy. This, however, doesn't mean that rapport always takes precedence over rasping throughout the CD. Sudden mouth movements and split tones reorient many massed-choir-like sound sequences to prevent them from vibrating as mere languid textures. Fuzzy air-crackles and sudden tongue-slaps challenge them, without replacing Baroque-like fluttering modulations on On the Window Side for instance, so that the final section is focused blowing. Meanwhile, on the lengthy Blue Pénombre, with every tone-partial extended and accented, the narrative gradually thickens until waveform-like drones are bisected by crackling static and woody-contralto bas-clarinet timbres.

Ambient and reductionist without being vapid, Lauzier's creations on A Pond in my Living Room also impress without noisy braggadocio. What challenges will this reedist, who is prominent in groups such as Sainct [sic] Laurens and Quartetski, as well as on his own, now set himself? Certainly they will be no hardship to listen to."-Musicworks Magazine
