"Liner notes:I first time I ever heard John Butcher play was at Colchester Arts Centre on 26th November 1992. I'd spotted a poster in the town library advertising an evening of John Cage's music to be performed by John, Chris Burn and Max Eastley. Admittedly, I hadn't too much previous knowledge of the musicians but I had read some bits and pieces about Cage. It was just a name thought, little more. The concert intrigued me nonetheless. Colchester is the oldest recorded town in Great Britain, predating the Roman conquest of AD 43. The Arts Centre is located in St. Mary's at the Walls Church dating from 1206, some of the original parts were built against the old Roman wall (which still stands in modern Colchester). I was no stranger to those thick stone walls at St. Mary's. Much of my formative gig going had taken place there via the monthly jazz club offerings. Charlie Rouse, Mal Waldron, Steve Lacy, Harry Sweets Edison, Stan Tracey, Teddy Edwards, Tommy Smith, Danny Thompson,Paul Dunmall and Jack Walrath were just some of the visitors I had seen there. The Cage concert, along with a number of London based gigs I'd been discovering, helped kick start something different and I had become a regular at the adventurous concerts promoted by an organisation called The Whole Ear Society staged at St. Mary's. Evan Parker, AMM, Tilbury performing Morton Feldman, Phil Minton, Roger Turner, Alan Wilkinson, Louis Moholo, John Russell, Simon Fell, Morphogenesis and various other free thinkers all passed through. The events that took place on the stage at St. Mary's helped shape my life. I eventually became a musician as a direct result of some of the amazing things I heard and saw there. Twenty five years later I'm writing these notes and give a belated thanks to those inspiring times and to all the wonderful musicians. The music, thankfully captured on this recording, becomes part of the realtime legacy. Doubtless, someone in the audience that evening at 21 Grand inOakland, California, inspired by the efforts of John, Damon and Walter, underwent a similar styled conversion - their life unexpectedly changed forever, simply by putting themselves in the right place at the right time."-Mark Wastell

Artist Biographies:

"John Butcher's work ranges through improvisation, his own compositions, multitracked pieces and explorations with feedback and extreme acoustics.Originally a physicist, he left academia in '82, and has since collaborated with hundreds of musicians - Derek Bailey, John Tilbury, John Stevens, The EX, Akio Suzuki, Gerry Hemingway, Polwechsel, Gino Robair, Rhodri Davies, Okkyung Lee, John Edwards, Toshi Nakamura, Paul Lovens, Eddie Prevost, Mark Sanders, Christian Marclay, Otomo Yoshihide, Phil Minton, and Andy Moor - to name a few.

He is well known as a solo performer who attempts to engage with the uniqueness of place. Resonant Spaces is a collection of site-specific performances collected during a tour of unusual locations in Scotland and the Orkney Islands. His first solo album, Thirteen Friendly Numbers, includes compositions for multitracked saxophones, whilst later solo CDs focus on live performance, composition, amplification and saxophone-controlled feedback.

HCMF has twice commissioned him to compose for his own large ensembles. Other commissions include for Elision (Australia), the Rova (USA) & Quasar (Canada) Saxophone Quartets, reconstructed Futurist Intonarumori (USA), "Tarab Cuts" (based on pre-WWII Arabic recordings, and shortlisted for the 2014 British Composer's Award) and "Good Liquor .." for the London Sinfonietta. In 2011 he received a Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Artists.

Recent groupings include The Apophonics with Robair and Edwards, Anemone with Peter Evans, Plume with Tony Buck & Magda Mayas and a trio with Okkyung Lee & Mark Sanders.Butcher values playing in occasional encounters - ranging from large groups such as Butch Morris' London Skyscraper and the EX Orkestra, to duo concerts with David Toop, Kevin Drumm, Claudia Binder, Paal Nilssen-Love, Thomas Lehn, Fred Frith, Keiji Haino, Ute Kangeisser, Matthew Shipp and Yuji Takahashi."

"Damon Smith studied double bass with Lisle Ellis and has had lessons with Bertram Turezky, Joëlle Leandré, John Lindberg, Mark Dresser and others. Damon's explorations into the sonic palette of the double bass have resulted in a personal, flexible improvisational language based in the American jazz avant-garde movement and European non-idiomatic free improvisation. Visual art, film and dance heavily influence his music, as evidenced by his CAMH performance of Ben Patterson's Variations for Double Bass, collaborations with director Werner Herzog on soundtracks for Grizzly Man and Encounters at the End of the World, and an early performance with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

Damon has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including: Cecil Taylor, Marshall Allen (of Sun Ra's Arkestra), Henry Kaiser, Roscoe Mitchell, Michael Pisaro, Wadada Leo Smith, Marco Eneidi, Wolfgang Fuchs, Peter Brötzmann and Peter Kowald. After many years in the San Francisco Bay Area, and five great years in Houston, Texas working regularly with Alvin Fielder, Sandy Ewen, David Dove & Chris Cogburn, Damon will move to the Boston area in the fall of 2016. Damon has run Balance Point Acoustics record label since 2001, releasing music focusing on transatlantic collaborations between US and European musicians."

"Weasel Walter (real name Walter Wyzowski) is a composer and instrumentalist who founded the band The Flying Luttenbachers in Chicago in 1991 with a current member of Cellular Chaos and Behold...The Arctopus. Over the years, The Flying Luttenbachers included noted Dylan Posa, and Michael Colligan, while creating a body of music drawing equally from no wave, death metal, gamelan, noise music, hardcore punk and modern classical. Walter moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003, where he formed the latest of many Luttenbachers lineups, remaining on percussion with the addition of bassist Mike Green (Burmese), and virtuoso guitarist Ed Rodriguez (ex-Colossamite, Gorge Trio). Singular guitar phenomenon Mick Barr (Krallice, Octis, Orthrelm) joined the group in 2005. The Flying Luttenbachers ceased to operate in late 2007. On November 25, 2009, Weasel Walter announced that he was moving to New York City to join the band Behold... The Arctopus on drums and will be writing "new, more extreme material from scratch." He also formed Cellular Chaos with Marc Edwards (drummer), Admiral Grey and Ceci Moss."
