Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Something like the band Honest John could only come from the Scandinavian scene. It seems that only the musicians born and living in the top of the world have the vision, the ingenuity and the guts to combine elements nobody else would dare to, with the preconceived idea that it wouldn't work, and further more making things in such a way that everything seems natural and just the continuation of old procedures.

You certainly noticed that before: the results use to be new and different, qualities that you only achieve taking risks and walking in no man's land. The Norwegian and Swedish quintet formed by some of the most important musicians of the creative jazz and free improvised circuits in those two countries (we can hear them in groups like Sheriffs of Nothingness, Cortex, Large Unit, Ballrogg and Trondheim Jazz Orchestra) gathered inspiration in the most improbable sources, namely Dutch free jazz (the one established around Misha Mengelberg and the legendary Instant Composers Pool), Brazilian rooted styles like bossa nova and samba and - even more surprisingly - the contemporary classical music of Webern and Sciarrino.

That's what makes this a highly original project, combining a special richness of materials and language to another Scandinavian particularity: the energetic way everything is delivered to us."-Clean Feed

Artist Biographies

"Ole-Henrik Moe (1966) is a composer and musician of extraordinary talent and originality who has never really found his place inside the various music scenes in Oslo and Norway. Too extreme even for the most openminded in academic music circles, his likeminded will most likely be found among followers of sound artists like Deathprod, Maja Ratkje and Lasse Marhaug or composers like Scelsi, Feldman and Varese. This double cd contains some of the most extreme solo violin music ever written, performed and recorded. Two pieces lasting 40 and 43 minutes, both pushing the performer to the edge when it comes to endurance and concentration. For the recording of these pieces the composer, himself a more than capable violinist, was happy to leave the difficult task to Kari Rønnekleiv, an accomplished player perfect for this kind of challenge. Liner notes by Cecilie Ore and Rolf Wallin."

"Johan Erik Nylander (born 3 April 1981 in Norberg, Sweden) is a Swedish jazz musician (drums), improviser and composer, working in Norway since 2002. He plays in several bands, among them Ola Kvernberg Trio, "Kobert", Kirsti Huke Quartet, Tore Brunborg Trio, "Liarbird", Bjørn Alterhaug Quintet, "Peloton", Juxtaposed, Magic Pocket, "Monoswezi", and his own Erik Nylanders Orkester.

After completing high school at Domarhagsskolan, Nylander studied on the Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonservatorium (2002-04). He fold recognition on the Norwegian and Nordic jazz scenes within various projects and contributed on a number of releases, among them the album Corrupted Mirror (2009), in a meeting with Karl Stømme (trumpet) and Steinar Nickelsen (keyboard). The album took shape in the studio where the musicians met without any specific intention to record an album. The idea was to use the three instruments in interaction playing all kinds of music, coming naturally in the moment. The recordings were made in three different sessions. Most of the tracks are improvised on the spot, but also includes compositions written by Strømme and Nickelsen. The Oberheim OB-X synthesizer from 1980 was crucial for the album soundscape.

In 2005 he performed at the international Jazz festival Nattjazz in Bergen, Norway, with Marita Røstad & "Velvet City". The album A festa Vale Tudo (2009) within his Erik Nylanders Orchestra (including Eivind Lønning, Espen Reinertsen, Hanna Gjermundrød, Ole Morten Vågan and Petter Vågan) marked Nylander's debut as a record producer and band leader. He has also collaboratively initiated several other band projects."
