"A friction quartet, at times quite energized. In addition to viola, cello, and double bass, the instrumentation is notable for Kriton B.'s daxophone, a rather obscure instrument in the class of "friction idiophone," which consists of a wooden block with contact microphones that can be fitted with a variety of different wooden "tongues," which are then played with a bow and a second piece of wood called a "dax" that is used to adjust pitch and timbre. The resulting music exists outside the idea of notes, scales, or any other neat Western organization of sound. Still, the daxophone has an affinity with the strings: an impressive array of rasping, scraping, whining sounds, all undoubtedly connected to the pressure and tension of objects rubbing together, and which fit snuggly within more rough-hewn methods for playing string instruments. One is reminded of skull resonance, of sound as a vibration transmitted through a solid object rather than through the air. The album and songtitles are all related to beekeeping, although I hear less Kent Carter's "insect music" than perhaps the creaks and groans of the wooden nuc boxes themselves as they thrum with activity, as though the contact mics had been embedded in the very walls of the artificial hive. The pieces range from the creaking drones of wind whipping through an old barn to incredibly tense knots of activity, the sense of torsion palpable, like branches being bent and twisted into splinters or the sound beneath the waves as a ship gets tossed against the rocks. The daxophone pushes the three string players away from clean tones and traditional playing: instead, they meet its strange challenge by rubbing strings, bowing wooden bodies, plying out harmonics, or pizzicato attacks with no particular note in mind."-Dan Sorrells, The Free Jazz Collective

"Was born 1988 in Lisboa, Portugal and started playing cello and trumpet at Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa at the age of 7. In 1999 joined Conservatório Nacional de Música de Lisboa to study classical and music theory and in the current year recorded his first album - Multiples - with Ernesto Rodrigues and José Oliveira out on Creative Sources Recordings.
Apart from work in music ensembles ranging for contemporary classical to free improvisation, also works with live music poetry, theatre and film-music. After lengthy residency in Lisboa, (1988-2016) moved to Berlin and has been active as composer and improviser in the scene.

"Adam Goodwin is a Texan double bassist, composer, and visual artist. He engages in a wide spectrum of artistic activity that involves frequent collaboration with performers, composers, sound artists, choreographers, dancers and visual artists.
Having completed music degrees in both classical and contemporary double bass performance, Goodwin moved to Berlin, Germany to delve fully into the world of experimental and improvised music. He is also active within the Turkish and Arabic music scene in Berlin.
He has performed extensively throughout Europe, North America and Asia, presenting contemporary chamber music and symphonic works as well as free improvisation, original compositions and a vast range of pieces written for solo contrabass.
Goodwin's musical approach places a heavy emphasis on physical gesture and spontaneity, along with a conscious consideration of the particular space and context in which the music is taking place. "Kriton Beyer is a Greek-German musician and composer, who - as a performer and improviser - mainly works with the harmonium and the daxophone. He studied musicology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. From 1990 - 2004 he played with a variety of local music groups in Greece, the better known of which probably being Floros Floridis, Sakis Papadimitriou's troupe "omada epi topou" ("the offhand ensemble") and the post-rock group "Sigmatropic". In 2004 he moved to Berlin, where he got heavily involved in the improvised music scene of the city.
Since then he has worked with many musicians like: Kresten Osgood, Axel Dörner, Tristan Honsinger, Tomomi Adachi, Richard Scott, Liz Allbee, Els Vandeweyer and Harri Sjöström. Kriton Beyer is also a member of the "Berlin Soundpainting Orchestra".
As a performer, he uses both the natural sound of his instrument and regular playing techniques as well as preparation, objects and extended techniques. As an improvising musician, he has performed throughout Europe.
His compositions are usually characterized by conceptualism, while some of his more recent work focuses on pattern formation of sonic events in time continua.
