"Born in NYC, Pablo began playing saxophones in the 4th grade and later in local bands while attending the High School of Music & Art. During high school, he joined Jaki Byard's Apollo Stompers, and later the Tito Puente Orchestra.
In 1982, Pablo took his own group J. Walter Negro & the Loose Jointz to Europe, featuring Arturo O'farrill and Dennis Mackrel. Upon returning, he began playing as a sideman and studio musician in the NYC Latin scene, working and recording with some of this genre's most outstanding artists: Tito Puente, Mario Bauza, Chico O'Farrill, Sergio Gorge, Willie Colon, Raphel Cortijo, Celia Cruz, Jose Alberto, Eddie Palmeri, the Machito Orchestra, Patato Valdez, Mongo Santamaria, and just about everybody else. Concurrently, he was working with the likes of Rashid Ali, Carla Bley, David Sanborn, Gil Evans, Anthony Braxton, Wynton Marsalis, and many more (at-the-time) lesser-known artists such as Steven Bernstein (Sex Mob), Joe Bowie (Defunkt), Adam Rogers and Dave Binney (Lost Tribe), exploring the world of jazz that surrounded him in NYC.
In the 90's, while working with Tito Puente in the Bronx, he was asked to appear in the movie The Mambo Kings and record the soundtrack. He temporarily relocated to Los Angeles to act in the film. Upon returning to NYC, he continued touring and recording with Mario Bauza. In 1995, he joined the Count Basie Orchestra. After a year and a half, he left to tour and record with Arturo O'farrill and the Chico O'Farrill Orchestra. In 2000, Pablo moved to the west coast to work and live, and has worked with James Newton, Art Davis, Justo Almario, Bennie Maupin, Oskar Cartaya, Adam Roudolph, Martin Medeski & Wood, Jim Thirwel, Paul Simon and David Bowie as well as recording for many soundtracks and TV spots.
Pablo currently plays baritone saxophone in Jazz@LincolnCenter's Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO). "John Lindberg commenced his full-time professional career at age sixteen, allowing for total immersion into his work as a performer/composer, subsequently being mentored by the late great bassist David Izenzon.
The first public performances of his ensemble compositions began in 1975, and in 1980 he recorded his first album focused on his original music, a collection of works for solo double bass, Comin' & Goin'.
Over the last forty-one years he has traveled the globe performing thousands of concerts of creative music, in thirty-six countries on five continents. He has released myriad albums - over one hundred - that spotlight his original compositions for a variety of jazz ensembles, and feature his singularly identifiable bass playing.
His extended works for chamber ensembles combined with improvising artists have been widely commissioned, including works for The Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, New York Chamber Ensemble, and Neues Kolner Streichquartett. His catalogue contains over one hundred and fifty published works.
He is renowned as an ensemble leader, a collaborator in special duet settings, a solo double bass performer, and as co-founder of the String Trio of New York with Billy Bang and James Emery. He has worked with a plethora of luminary creative artists, including: Albert Mangelsdorff, Ed Thigpen, Eric Watson, Louis Sclavis, Human Arts Ensemble, Frank Lowe, Wadada Leo Smith, Susie Ibarra, Karl Berger, Anthony Braxton, Andrew Cyrille, Dave Douglas, John Carter, Henry Threadgill, Jack DeJohnette, Regina Carter, Jimmy Lyons, Sunny Murray, Roswell Rudd, Mary Redhouse, Pablo Calogero, Joe LaBarbera, Wendell Harrison, and Kevin Norton.
His work as a producer of numerous recordings, and of powerful cross-genre projects - such as JazzHopRevolution and BLOB - is well established, as is his ongoing work as an educator with a distinctly unique message.
Awards and fellowships in support of his work include those from New Music USA, National Endowment for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, Chamber Music America, ASCAP, Arts International, Aaron Copland Fund for Music, Cary Charitable Trust, New York State Council on the Arts, Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, Meet The Composer, and a Diploma de Honor from Gobernacion Cordillera, Chile.
Of late, John's disparate extra-musical activities - which include a stint as a community rescue squad ambulance driver, serving as general contractor for a cabin built with carpenter friends in South Dakota, and being engaged as an observational naturalist - have significantly informed his work as a composer and musician.
Released in September, 2016, on Clean Feed Records, are two new albums:John Lindberg BC3, Born in an Urban Ruin and John Lindberg Raptor Trio, Western Edges. "Joe LaBarbera (born February 22, 1948) is an American jazz drummer and composer. He is best known for his recordings and live performances with the trio of pianist Bill Evans in the final years of Evans's career. Prior to joining Evans he worked in the quartet of Chuck Mangione and Joe Farrell.
He was born in Mt. Morris, New York, younger brother to saxophonist Pat LaBarbera, and trumpeter and arranger/composer John LaBarbera. He was formally educated at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
After Berklee he spent two years with the US Army band at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He began his professional career playing with Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd, followed by the Chuck Mangione Quartet.
