Shalabi, Sam / Alan Bishop & Sam Shalabi: Mother Of All Sinners (Puppet On A String) [VINYL] (Unrock)

Label: Unrock
Released in: Netherlands

"Unrock's Saraswati Series, mostly string orientated, zigzags between the lines where underground and High-Art performance overlap. Out jumps the first part of our actively anti-Western sub series : the "Puppet on a String" twin albums!

Osama Shalabi, a born Egyptian (best known for his work with Shalabi Effect & Land Of Kush), is an expert playing the Oud, a traveler between the eastern and western worlds and long time contributor to the Montreal scene. Sam -who spent the last few years home in Cairo- breathes his own sense of space and time through the epic "Tamara", an 18 minute long melodic, delightful improvisation.

The other story starts in Agouza, Cairo, where Sam Shalabi & Alan Bishop spent some time jamming . They'd run free, lose form, find intensity, and wound up creating a contemporary version of oriental psychedelic free form. A mind-blowing , wild, never mellow Cairo night, now documented here. It's getting intense: A north-African sand storm."-UnRock

He has also released solo material under the aliases Alvarius B. and Uncle Jim. In the early 1980s Bishop played in the short-lived band Paris 1942 with Maureen Tucker of the Velvet Underground. Bishop is now a member of the Cairo-based band,The Invisible Hands. He is the co-founder, along with Hisham Mayet, of Sublime Frequencies, a Seattle-based record label focused on collating esoteric music and imagery from all over the world, most notably Southeast Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East."

Biography for: Sam Shalabi

"Sam Shalabi is a central node in Montréal's free improv scene. One cannot count the many projects he is a part of. He is best known as a founding member of Shalabi Effect, who have recorded 2 albums on Alien8 Recordings which have earned the band extremely good response from critics and music enthusiasts alike. Apart from Shalabi Effect, he is also part of a number of bands, among which Detention, Molasses, Balai Mécanique, Po, 'Gypt Gore, and a trio with David Kristian and Alexandre St-Onge. He is also known for three solo albums, Luteness (Squint Fucker Press, deleted), On Haschisch (Alien8), and of course Osama, his investigation of arabophobia in a "post-9-11 world". His style ranges from freeform psychedelic rock to the most oddball abstract performance. Although mostly known as a guitarist, the highly versatile Shalabi also performs on oud and a variety of other instruments."
