"Incredibly thrilled to present a new group from Detroit, Chatoyant who have given us a real burner in their new tape Place of Other Destination. Two side long explorations that touch on Mwandishi era Herbie Hancock with a dose of Grateful Dead & a healthy dose of American Tapes influence. Landing somewhere on the jazz spectrum, but also somewhere completely out beyond. A truly beautiful thing."-Astral Spirits
Chatoyant: (of a gem, especially when cut en cabochon) showing a band of bright reflected light caused by aligned inclusions in the stone.
"Detroit noise quartet Chatoyant with James Baljo of Wolf Eyes (featuring members of The Volebeats and more) is an instrumental group that is as hard to pigeon-hole as its membership suggests, Chatoyant burst on to the Detroit music scene around 2013. Although the work of all four members is relatively well-known there, Chatoyant represents a definite (if logical) deviation in their output. Collectively they've tapped an energy that is distinct from their individual work- or anyone else's.
The mixture of spontaneous composition and rock aesthetics is nothing new- yet no one mines the potential of this combination in quite the same way as Chatoyant. Through a kaleidoscopic transformation of ideas, Chatoyant moves seamlessly from one soundscape to another, radically changing tempo, dynamics and timbre. It's not a neck-up, intellectualized sound - though there are unrelentingly heady portions. Instead, the group intuitively veers from tranquil to explosive, dense to spare as they draw on the full range of musical expression and imbue it with a rhythmic intensity almost unheard of rock music.
Guitarist Matt Smith has had a long and quietly influential career in Detroit music. Locally he's best known as the guitarist/singer of the psychedelic-pop perfection quartet Outrageous Cherry and as co-vocalist and guitarist in early alt-country pioneers The Volebeats, both of which are still active after more than 20 years. But his most high profile gigs are playing guitar with (Sixto) Rodriguez and keys in Crime and the City Solution. He's produced records and played with a range of artists, including raw-soul legend Andre Williams and early garage-rock icon and producer Kim Fowley; Matt's also gigged behind Damo Suzuki and Rhys Chatham and uses Crazy Jim's guitar amp."-Big Ears
