descriptions, reviews, &c.

"Unjustly remembered solely as the wife of the late extraordinary guitarist Sonny Sharrock, Linda Sharrock carves out a unique niche of her own on this album with a vocalizing style born of the free jazz movement of the 1960's along with aspects of rhythm and blues and gospel music. in 1969, she participated in Sonny's Black Woman LP, which was a milestone, as her screams, wails and soaring vocalizations brought to the human voice the cries of freedom akin to saxophonists Albert Ayler and Pharaoh Sanders. She has recorded sporadically since then, but generally maintaining a low profile until the release of this fascinating package. The two discs contained within consist of studio and live recordings of collective improvisations, 50 minutes each, with Sharrock vocalizing in the company of Itaru Oki on trumpet and flugelhorn, Mario Rechtern on saxophones, Eric Zinman on piano, Makoto Sato on drums and Yoram Rosilio on bass. The music on both takes is wide open and free, themusicians are respectful to each other but also not afraid to take to the challenge of making things let go and fly. While Linda Sharrock's vocal power may not be what it once was, it is fascinating to hear her pick her spots, and the use her instrument to the fullest to duck and weave through the assembled instruments and then take command for solo flights of her own. This is true outsider music with perceived boundaries being crossed with ease and then discarded altogether. While she may have been in the background for quite some time, this album and it's title throw down the gauntlet for women in improvised music and women in general: their time has come"-Tim Niland, jazzandblues.blogspot.com

Artist Biographies:

"Contrabassist from the " EDIM , Yoram Rosilio has been scouring the Parisian scenes since 2000 and participated in more than 250 concerts in the Parisian cinemas. At the same time, he recorded several albums in very different styles (Tiramisu, Ocho Soles, Damien Ossart trio, Zephyr Septet ...). He studied the oud and oriental music in parallel with Michel Arkache and Riadh Ghdir. Since 2006, alongside Soraya Djebbar, choreographer in contemporary dance he experimented the alliance of dance and music in improvisation. These two main sources of inspiration, both instrumental and conceptual, are Charles Mingus and William Parker. He met the latter on his last trip to New York. Although Jazz, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Song, Traditional, Free ..., Jazz is the greatest artistic satisfaction and the most rewarding experiences. In September 2006, he founded the Bar-Kochba Quintet which combines free jazz and oriental music."

"Itaru Oki (沖至) was born in Suma-Ku, Kobe, Hyogo, Japan on 10th September 1941. Oki Itaru was raised in a rich musical environment; his father was a player of the Shakuhachi (Japanese vertical flute) and his mother was a master of the Koto (Japanese horizontal harp) of the Ikuta School. He started to play the trumpet in his high school brass band before playing in a Dixieland style band and then in a bop band. In the late 1960's, the trumpeter began playing free jazz. He changed his place of performance from Kansai (a western area of Japan) to Tokyo in 1965. After improving his skill in many groups, he joined an experimental unit "ESSG" of Togashi Masahiko and Sato Masahiko. Oki made his first tour to Europe with the ESSG in 1969. After being back from Europe, he formed the Oki Itaru Trio, which later grew into a quartet. In June 1974, he moved to Paris, France. After living in Lyon for a while, he moved back to Paris in December 1999. Until the present, Oki has continually performed at concerts and festivals in France and various other countries in Europe."
