Multi-reedist Mats Gustafsson explores unique environments in improvised music with two duo, one on each side of this Bocian release. The first side is with free vocalist Phil Minton, where Gustafsson weaves reeds pops, scrabbly playing and instrument sounds in a bizarre tapestry with Mintons gargling, strange utterances, and otherwise indescribable vocals sounds. The conversation is surprisingly reserved but constantly in motion, making for an extremely strange, sometimes moody, but always satisfying dialog.
The second side is with UK free improvising guitarist John Russel, and is quite different than the first side. Russell plays in the Bailey school of free improvisation, and his abstracted playing is the perfect foil to Gustafsson's extended techniques and unusual utterances. With unexpected twists and turns the active listener is rewarded with playful and subtle interactions that alternately surprise and settle, resolving in captivating ways.
