Neither is there any kind of conventionally direct interaction, where one player plays something and the other supports or counters, nor is there a sensibility of total independence. The American soprano saxophonist and the Japanese percussionist have a special understanding, no doubt a kind of cultural negotiation, that gives their joint activities a simultaneous atmosphere of interaction and independence.
