Tietchens, Asmus: FT+ [Used Item] (Crouton)

Label: Crouton
Released in: USA

"In 2001-2002, the label Crouton released Folktales, a series of three, three-inch CD sets, each disc presenting the work of a different experimental artist (either in free improvisation, electronic sound art, or somewhere in between). Chris Rosenau, Hal Rammel, John Kannenberg, Jon Mueller, Bhob Rainey, Achim Wollscheid, Dan Warburton, Adam Sonderberg, and Kevin Shea were the contributing artists. In guise of a postlude, Asmus Tietchens was asked to revisit each disc. Titled FT+, the resulting CD presents nine short pieces (between three and five minutes in duration). Of course, calling Tietchens' approach "remixing" would be unfair, since he breaks down, transforms, and reassembles each track anew. The music is definitely his, close to his Gamma-Menge series, his vinyl releases on Die Stadt, or his similar reworkings of percussionist Jon Mueller's improvisations in 7 Stucke. And yet he retains the sound palette and spirit of the original pieces, although sometimes you'd be hardpressed to recognize them. What he does to Mueller's "How I Learned to Breathe" in "FT 2/1" is downright unbelievable. And his treatment of Bhob Rainey's solo saxophone improvisation "Sweet Sonk" in "FT 2/2" explodes it into another dimension. The artistry and virtuosity in extended techniques are still there, but fancifully spatialized and multiplied. And in "FT 3/2" he takes Adam Sonderberg's "I Just Want to Make Sure That We Have the Context Correct Here" and corrects it, cutting out the excess of provocation and the overlong passages, extracting in the process a darker, melancholy-filled atmosphere. This is an essential item for those who own the Folktales series. Those who missed it (each volume came out in a limited edition) get the next best thing with this filtered compendium.
