Two extended and unusual improvisations between Australian saxophonist Jim Denley and Dutch pianist Cor Fuhler, developed over 7 weeks and recorded in the studio in 2013, using imaginative preparations and inventions to create fascinating new sounds and structures.
Denley, Jim / Cor Fuhler
Released in: Australia
"Jim Denley and Dutch musician Cor Fuhler first met at the Taklos Festival in Switzerland in the early 1990s and Cor's frequent visits to Australia over the years gave them the opportunity to occasionally play. In 2012 Cor moved to Sydney, allowing them to ramp up the duo - this is their first release together.
Over 7 weeks at the end of 2013 they recorded weekly in Cor's backyard studio, eventually choosing take 9 and 12, titling them Skive and Wag.
Their imaginative preparations and inventions mean that listeners will find it hard to believe they are playing saxophone and piano, and at times, be unable to distinguish between the two players. They don't accept clichés about instrumental notions and fashionable schools (new and old).
But Truancy isn't just about opting out, rather, time away from institutions has been devoted to generating new sounds and structures."-splitrec
"It's a great record in which we recognise the acoustic alto saxophone by Denley and the acoustic piano of Fuhler... In the early bit of 'Wag' it sounds like they use electronics to generate a mild wall of feedback... It's hard to believe that it's just these two instruments. Of the two pieces 'Wag' is the more intense... Even when it paces down it still has that menacing quality of a noise piece. 'Skive' is perhaps quieter and subdued, but here too Denley plays some shrieking notes.... But 'Skive' has more air, more space to breath and both of these pieces, although different, complement each other very well, and offer a truly rich album of improvised music."-Frans De Waard, vital WeeklyAlso available on CD.
