An active set of recordings from eRikm in duo with drummer Martin Brandlmayr, the latter keeping both players' feet on the ground while the former introduces and intervenes with unusual sonic elements, disruptive and lyrical, an enjoyably complex and unpredictable set.

"Both musicians have been active in the scene of improvised and experimental music for twenty years, both have been astounding their audiences with their intricately developed playing manners. Now they joined their forces on this album.
eRikm, based in Marseille, started his musicial activities as a virtuoso turntablist in early 90s, gradually shifting his focus to more abstract music, sometimes abandoning turntables or substituting them with minidiscs or CD-turntables. His recent record output includes collaborations with Catherine Jauniaux, Norbert Möslang, Michel Doneda, Jerome Noetinger, dieb13, as well as solo albums Variations Opportunistes, Sixpériodes, Stème, Lux Paylettes, Transfall and the most recent Select Archive. Ecotone is his third project for Mikroton, following Stodgy and Mal Des Ardents / Pantoneon.
Martin Brandlmayr, from Vienna, is known for his inhuman capability of overprecise percussion playing which at the same time retain a deep humanity and produce a beautiful sound. He's the driving force behind the superb trio Radian, who have released records on Mego and Thrill Jockey, the improvising trio Trapist with bassist Joe Williamson and Martin Siewert, the longrunning legendary quartet Polwechsel (along with Werner Dafeldecker, Michael Moser and Burkhard Beins), and other projects like Autistic Daughters (with Dean Roberts and Werner Dafeldecker) and Kapital Band 1 (with Nicholas Bussmann). Ecotone is his second project for Mikroton, following El Infierno Musical quintet's album with Christof Kurzmann, Ken Vandermark, Eva Reiter and Clayton Thomas.
Opening with an Apocalypse - a dis-covering where everything is assembled anew, where a snare drum gets dismembered. The drums instantly reanimate into a new body without organs, opening a breach, opening a space. The drummer lifts his sticks and hits; a vertical landscape emerges inbetween, unidentified as it first breaks into the ears, as some atmospheric depression: variations in grain, tracing, electronic mass - disparate energy where some new chemistry arises, all between skin and memory. Each impact, each collapsing, each crumbling of the surface sets anew the fiction of the encounter, of the game; devoid of catharsis, but definitely vital."-Mikroton
"More traditional, it seems, in terms of improvisation is the release 'Ecotone' by erikM (cdj & electronics) and Martin Brandlmayr (drums). It's especially the latter that brings this into the realm of jazz, free jazz and regular improvisation. His playing is hectic, nervous and all the usual banging that comes in this world, but always recognizable as playing a drum kit. Nothing wrong with that of course, but for me, a lover of more weirder and irregular improvisation, the spicing comes from erikM, who delivers a very vivid set of electronics. Drone like, noise based, ambient, clicks, cuts, crackles, erikM uses the entire spectrum of possibilities to effectively change moods and textures played by Brandlmayr into some even more abstracter and wilder. Don't get me wrong: this is a great release too - not as great the other one I just heard from the same label, I must admit - but this too is a fine addition to the world of improvisation and an excellent release on Mikroton."-Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly

"Since 1992, eRikm has extended the field of artistic experimentation on the international scene.
Maintaining a constant fusion between thought, instinct and sensitivity, he pursues a simultaneity of practices and addresses the interplay between various compositional modes, relating to and using all languages.
From his early experience as a guitarist through to his later visual work, he is a maverick genre-bender who breaks down anyone's attempts to conveniently classify him.
Quickly recognised as a virtuoso turntablist and sound artist (1996), eRikm has made a longlife habit of crossing all territories and " world-systems " deemed "independent", "institutional".
At the same time (1997), he has developed an open and aspirational approach toward the technological media, both as a means of development for a new economic model and as an instrument for creation, production and diffusion.
He deals with sounds like living organisms, constantly in flux, always open to the risk of accident or delight/unisson. As he plays with all these contradictions in his improvisations, his performance reaches new heights of intensity, trading off both understanding and sensation, seriousness and farce, anticipation and instinct.
His work references both the intimate and political, both popular and high culture, but without demonstration. Rather he creates a short-circuit connection between points with his live generated (and degenerated) material - from noise to reference - presenting multiple ways to capture each moment of the present in clear focus.
Throughout his career, collaborations have naturally occurred with his audiences and contemporaries, most notably : Luc Ferrari, Christian Marclay, Mathilde Monnier, Jerome Noetinger, FM Einheit... The kind of coincidences which have confirmed his instinctive search for transmutation, and to play on several levels.
Since 1997, on his own or with collaborators, eRikm has toured (with 5-7 on-tour projects to date), or created by request specific pieces, both transversal or for fixed spaces (record labels, radio, festivals, art centres...)
In the meanwhile, each time building on what has emerged before, the most personal fragments from his work (notably from his early artworks in photography, drawings, visual installations and video) continue to substantiate a singular kaleidoscopic vision.
Ultimately, eRikm's research resonates through all of his work, bordering scientific discovery and a poetic curiosity of the world.
